hurricane's most likely predicted path sets the eye landing on my doorstep at about tuesday morning. the rest of the storm will arrive on monday some time.

either way, it's over jamaica right now and it's already a category 3 storm, so I'm headed out. it looks like my home area will get the storm surge side of the storm, and since I'm a decent ways in-land that means my house should be fine, but either way I'm headed out to mississippi for the duration. with any luck I'll be back by next weekend and my house will be fine, but either way I'll be gone for a few days at least. probably 2 weeks at most. if my house goes down in the storm then I have no idea how long I'll be out :p but hopefully that won't happen, so I'll plan to be back this weekend.

is homeowners' insurance more expensive in hurricane-prone areas

Akuryou13
31 Aug 2008, 01:45
is homeowners' insurance more expensive in hurricane-prone areasnot at all. if your home gets damaged in a hurricane they just claim that the damage was done by either wind or water, whichever you don't have insurance for. they also offer an optional hurricane insurance, but that conveniently doesn't include flood insurance, so if any actual damage is recieved they then say it was the flooding, not the actual storm. and storm surge also counts as flooding, somehow.

they're fun like that....

i really, really don't understand how that works, but whatever

Akuryou13
5 Jan 2009, 01:57
i really, really don't understand how that works, but whateverit's ridiculously wet here. 40F in the drier areas of the northern US is fairly comfortable to my understanding. here, it's very nearly painfully cold. 30F here actually hurts, where as cold doesn't actually bite that much until much colder in the drier areas of the northern US.

now, places immediately around the great lakes would be an exception I imagine (though obviously I don't actually know), as they would also be pretty moist and would get much colder than we do here to boot. the rest of the northern US, though, would be fairly dry.

none of this, for the record, is based on personal experience, but rather the experiences of family and friends who have gone up north and commented on how ridiculously wet the air is down here. my only experience is when it snowed for a couple hours and the 30-something degrees it was here started to actually be comfortable with only a light jacket for a while.

I'm going to Italy on Wednesday (17'th) and will be gone for two weeks! Going to the island of Sardinia with my family (fish puns are obligatory).
There will be no internet at the hotel, but rumor has it that there's an internet cafe that I'll probably visit once or twice to check my email.

My mom is bringing her laptop for some reason, despite the lack of convenient internet. So I've dumped my Fallout saves on my WD Passport and I've also got Chinatown Wars on my DS. So I should survive this trip.

I'm back! And it's just as damn warm here as it was in Italy (30 degrees).

It was a nice vacation, and I never felt compelled to visit the internet cafes that were about. Well, except for the second day there when my dad dropped his wallet in an old church we checked out, so I had to go online for ten minutes and find the number to the banks to disable his credit cards, but no internet other than that! And luckily the wallet was found and returned, by the priest. So, make sure to loose your wallet in a church if you ever feel the urge to do so.

Other than that it was an exhausting trip really, swiming in the ocean every day makes you tired (and salty). We saw some neat old caves and ruins, a town built by Mussolini, another by Julius Caesar, a rock where some guy named Joe once sat on and had lunch. Things like that. And a lot of progress was made in various games I brought, but because I kept switching between them none got finished. Oh well.

There was actually a study that proved religious people are less honest than atheists.

They put an 'honesty box' thing, watched people, checked if they paid the proper amount for the newspaper, then had them fill in a survey. They didn't know the newspaper was anything to do with the survey. The religious people were more likely to under-pay. Basically theists are thieves.

Also, the US atheist population is lower in prison than it is in the general populace.

I'm not sure how much of this is just because honesty and intelligence tend to correlate.

I just spent the last week backpacking in the Sierra Nevada mountains. 46 miles over 6 days. But the scenery was worth it.

Well, I'll be in Ironbridge/Bridgenorth/that sort of area that for some reason really likes the word "Bridge" for the next few days. And then going to Manchester after that. So semi-back Sunday, properly back the Sunday after that.

I'm tagging along with my parents on a holiday. Ever since my sister moved overseas, they've got the travel bug. This time we're going to Orlando, with brief stays in Honolulu and Los Angeles.

My laptop has a 3g modem built in though, so I might internets anyway.
