View Full Version : will the landscape editor be released early?

since the Worms3 landscapes will supposedly be too big to send to others when hosting a game online, it would make sense to release the landscape editor early. That way users could make landscapes and T17 could choose the best ones to be included with the game (Just like versions of WA came with flags made by users). This would make an even greater selection of landscapes to choose from when hosting online in Worms3.

This is a very good idea, can you do this if many people want this?

I don't really understand what you mean, if you mean that the custom-landscapes could be done by other persons, or the other selection like the Tropical one and the Spooky themed one, that coudl be really hard to do for those who aren't in the team.

I think if they wanted user levels on the games release, they would have released the editor long time ago, and Im sure the editor itself will be in develepment until the last moment so we get the best and most userfriendly interface and an effective editor. It won't be as simple as it used to be to do the levels anymore since it's 3D. And if you want to create your own theme you'll probably need third party 3D development tools to create the models.

Im guessing.

I like this idea. Then Team17 could run a few best level competitions, and assuming that the landscape editor can make maps good enough to be presented with the game, they could be included in the retail release. Bloopy would win. :p

I really like this idea, but it is a shame that we can't try the levels and check for design bugs that might occour. :)

I think Team17 should consider this!

from what I've heard, the landscape editor will be simple.

Even if we don't have the game to test our levels, t17 might give us suggestions for improvement. Anyway I'm sure they will hold competitions after the game is out :)

Would be kind of hard to make a map and not know excactly how the game played. You'd need to get a good feel of the game to see what would make your map work before you go making it.
So if you were given it now, you'd pretty much be only concentrating on making it look good and guessing the playabilty of it.

I think it'd be fun just to try, even if the levels created weren't included with W3D. If they released a beta version editor before the game itself, then even if it was a bit buggy the more obsessive mappers among us would be able to get a high level of proficiency even before the game came out... which means they make levels quicker, which means more levels to play online and all that. (Of course it'd have to be organised for everyone to take the time to d/l before actually playing online.) Any ideas anyone on what file size we're talking about for the W3D maps? 10 MB? 1 GB?

I'd say LESS than a gig. About a gig less.

The editor is already done. How do you think they made all those landscapes? I mean, they might improve it a bit, make it more user-friendly, but the actual program exists now.

No way are they gonna be as big as a GIG. Thats two CDs!

There porbably be quite small, somewhere between 0 - 5mb.

i think they said not larger than 500k, but i could be wrong :)

I want the editor :p how a level will play shouldnt be too taxing as long as your not making a racer of some kind.

Well I hope the maps aren't too large, would like to be able to d/l with a 56k modem... btw Rigga I was joking about the gigabyte bit, I know that!! (Actually, it's 1.57 CD's, or 1.46 if you use 700MB ones :p) will remember to put smiley face in next time I make a joke

I think they should map the hole thing onto a hyper surface. It would take only a few more lines of code in the grafix engine, and maybe twice that many in the physics engine. But in the result we will be able to modify the very topology of the map. How would you like the game on a surface of a flat hyper torus. For these of you who don't know it will make the worms that go through one end of a map to come out on the other. Kind of like in pac-man. It would also make fun things like wormholes (no pun intended) and hiden patches of space possible. And it is not nearly as difficult to do as it sounds.

Yeah, but would they still be able to deform it in realtime?

It breaks my heart to read all those hopeful posts of users... years have passed, and there is no landscape editor at all.

Well, no official editor...

Also, it's generally frowned upon to revive a years-old thread like this. Just a head's up.

Such is the way of things.

 It's nice to know you feel our pain. It's a shame, the transition to 3D could've been done a lot better, but I hardly even care any more. I still loved the 3D games, and I haven't uninstalled them, but the replayability ran out kinda quickly. These days, I like to have dreams which I have more control over so that I don't get disappointed.

I haven't posted too many threads over the years, and occasionally I've gone into my profile to look over them. So, I've been back to this one a few times. If I was an emotional person, this is probably the one that would make me cry. :p
