View Full Version : Forum closure?

From this thread: http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?p=796090

I can understand that a forum might not be the best way to communicate with fans, and that it might cost a bit to maintain but is that really a reason to kill and scatter an entire community?
This forum has a history, it is not just an online form used by fans to ask random questions to Team17, but a convivial place where anyone can discuss and share about their favourite games. Just look at the Fan Art subforum, it'd be a shame to lose such content. I'm sure there are many people who eventually grew attached to this place as well.

Is this forum simply going to disappear or will there still be an archive around? Either way, this decision is quite saddening.

Is a bit, didn't have the best start on the forums but still there's been some good memories (wendigo/vampire/spy game, art, discussions) activity has dropped so much though that I'm really not surprised, kinda saw it coming.

Oh hi shadowman, it's been a while. :p

I guess the forum isn't as active as it used to be, but maybe that's just because the new games are kinda lacking depth. Sure, they are conceptually great, but there's not much to say about them. I kinda miss the old Worms 4 Mayhem times, when missions had personality and everyone had fun modding the game. Had a bunch of fun in the Fan Art section too, it's a shame that all the cool guys left.

Yeah, I'll miss this place. I just hope there will be an archive of it somewhere, there's so much gold from years ago.

The last Worms game I properly enjoyed was Open Warfare 2, the other games after were a step backwards imo, Worms 2 Armageddon was good for a while but was plagued by online issues, Worms Revolution I just couldn't get into at all, didn't enjoy it one bit.

As I wrote in another thread... this is a very , VERY sad news. :(

I wish there was a way to avoid this decision: this forum is an important place for me and for many other people.

Why can't re-think the whole idea of closing it?

This is a wonderful community, I also made a couple of friends thank to it: Thurbo, D_Wormkiller, Tidus, Bonz, etc.

Please, Team17, PLEASE!!!

We (the true uber Worms nerds) LOVE this bloody forum!

That there is a very pertinent question and a pressing matter.

If the forum is allowed to survive in an archived, read-only format with all the threads accessible through their usual URLs, that's something we can probably work with. If it doesn't, that leaves links to changelogs, guides, interesting debates that established community consensus, replays, art and a bunch of other stuff throughout other forums, IRC logs and the entire rest of the internet dead, pointing nowhere. Nobody is going to be able to manually fix that, although I'm sure CyberShadow and other extremely dedicated individuals will try...

Yes of course I'll go to facebook and advertise my love for you, thank you for shutting down the forum. It was really becoming such an obsolete way for me to get my daily support for all of your games.

To be fair the forum has gone through enough database problems that most fanart and old threads are gone. I don't think it would make a very good archive.

Hello, people. Long time no see (the last time I visited was 13th January 2010!).

This is indeed saddening news, as I recall all the fun we used to have. But I understand Team17's decision and support them 100%. You have to move with the times, or you stop moving.

If you want an archive set up, I have a big hosting package with not much on it, and a spare vBulletin license. I'd be happy to have some kind of archive. It doesn't have to be working and open for new posts. If the forum has been dead for a long time then there's no point in trying to get people to post again. Social networking has taken over where community is concerned.

With that in mind, we have a Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/3418708780/?fref=ts) for Dream17 (http://www.dream17.info) (the web's first and only general Team17 fan site). If you like Team17 for all their talents and not just Worms, you can join it and help blow the dust off.

Thanks,

Matty

EDIT: Wow, twelve years of the Team17 forum. I could have raised a child in that time (probably incapable of raising a child).

Considering I've been coming here since I was 8 (I'm 17 now if you want to put that into perspective) I practically was raised by the forum. And being amongst such a wonderful group of people has inspired me and educated me for so long. The fanart section was what got me into drawing cartoons in the first place, and I gained a great deal of wisdom from the other posters - not to mention a biting sense of sarcasm.

Though, yes, it's been a while since most of us were truly 'active' on this forum, it was always nice to come back every so often and reminisce about the ways of our younger selves. I suppose now that's all we'll be able to do.

Goodbye, Team17. It's been a blast. And that's not just an unintentional Worms-related pun. :)

Seriously though, when I heard about this, I was devastated. I know I left a long time ago but it was still comforting to know this old place was waiting for me, if I ever wanted to come home. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Anyway, I'd like to write a longer post but my computer is busted and I'm having to type this on my Wii U (which is fiddly).

To all those who were there in the old days, I miss you guys. To those who came after, well done on making your own memories of this place.

So, here's to the greatest forum.. the greatest community... the world has ever seen. We will not see its like again, I fear, but we will always remember.

Man, this place was awesome! But, truth be told, I'm not that sad about seeing it go. It became something of a dead forum, most of the regulars either left or were barely posting.

...
Actually, I think I might've gotten the most out of this forum than anyone else. So, for the sake or reminiscing, have some facts:

I'm still friends with Thurbo, Zeor and Oft. I'm acquainted with a few more people I met here, but I don't talk to them as much.

I think everyone knows about my relationship with Kelster, but not many people know that I actually went out with another girl I met here (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34841) too. She... went missing three years ago though, which is pretty sad.

I absolutely don't regret making that fan game. Remember, back in 2005 or something? Sure, the end result suuuucked, but it was a damn good learning experience!

I've made over 10,000 posts (third-most posts of anyone) and actually joined in 2003 (http://forum.team17.co.uk/member.php?u=14158). Yeah, I totally broke the rules on double accounts. Can't ban me now Taylor! Hahahahaha!

I really do think I'm the smartest, most logical guy here! Mind you, I'm pretty sure I've been saying the same thing 8 years ago. I try not to think about it. At least now I'm doing a PhD in AI, so I'm getting to the point where people will actually start agreeing!

And finally, yes, I'm still using this same username and avatar. God, it really has been years!

Anyways I invite everyone to join and bring life back into the place, old and new members alike, even teamsters if they just wanna chill outside of corporate grounds. Well, I can't for the life of me seem to remember any of my old login details or even the email address I used for my account those years ago, so I had to make a new account just to make this post.

For those wondering, I'm an old user of this forum from several years ago that some may not-so-fondly remember as Oft99.

When I was about 9 years old, I used to spend most of my time on this forum. I think it was because I was in a little obsession with Worms at the time, or maybe it was going on this forum that caused that obsession in the first place, I don't remember. Anyhow, It was a little world-within-a-world that I seemed to fall in love with.

Nowadays, there is alot about my time with this forum that I would prefer to forget. One thing I've never told anyone is that at the time I was actually struggling with the perks of having high-functioning Asperger's Syndrome. The result of this as far as this forum was concerned is that I was probably a total idiot, the kind of "n00b" member who blindly went along with all of the various fads and crazes of the Fanart forum, such as making sprite sheets and "draw my sigworm" competition threads. Anyone remember those?
Still, many highlights still come to mind today that made it all worth it. Off the top of my head: Pressure's Caption Competition, the various comic series by Pigbuster and Splapp's Impossible Quiz were all particularly good moments.

This forum was the sole reason I discovered a love for creative activities I'd never have had otherwise, the main example being drawing artwork. I should point out that in those days my "art" was absolutely terrible: hasty jagged lines scrawled in MS Paint and saved in low-quality JPEG format. The folder on my computer that I stored those pictures in has since been lost, and I sincerely hope that no-one ever has to see it ever again.
Anyhow, those experiences essentially taught me to draw, and they are abilities that I find invaluable today.

As long as social avenues such as steam groups and Dream17 are kept open then I can live with this forum being closed down. Still, i've had some wonderful experiences here (as well as some that are quite the opposite of wonderful). this forum was such a significant part of my life during those particular years that it was probably responsible for shaping my human development, including my ability to understand the english langauge, my comprehension of dry humour and sarcasm, and my ability to draw. I find that pretty amazing now I think about it, or maybe just sad, I'm not sure.

"I was bitten by lilac once. Honest." -Zero72Haha! I remember that. It was from the setup for Philby and Traxada's joint forum comic. That one didn't really take off as well as Philby's first one though.

Forum comics were fun. Mine (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=29385) certainly wasn't the best, but those were good times anyway.

Also, remember this thing and the subsequent brief craze of similar threads (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=37525)? Hilarious. I had a whole thing planned out where Zero the player would end up exploring a forum where everybody was under mind control or something, then fight a boss, then it turned out Sigma was the villain because nothing had happened in Zero Comics for years, then something about a flying fortress or something. Vague plans, but they were there. Then we never made it out of the basement.

I dunno about the original Eggi (did he even exist?) but a certain Eggi@'s postings have been rather infrequent but relatively recent, so most would have survived the purge.

Zeor's (http://www.freewebs.com/zero72/)

oh holy crap

I guess the domain expired ages ago, but it never dawned on me that the freewebs account was still there. Guess that means I don't have to reupload anything.

Ha ha! (http://webzoom.freewebs.com/zero72/evilzero5.jpg)

Oh look, I found the first panel of Life of a Worms Weapon.

The rest of it doesn't seem to exist anywhere tho, sadly. :(

The gist of it is that he was exposed as a compulsive liar when he made up an elaborate story regarding a relative's death. I don't really remember any details, just that it was particularly amusing.

I still remember my first fisticuffs with APJ, and later shenanigans (http://i.imgur.com/bwJA34N.jpg) with Team17 members.

AndrewTaylor still has the comics on his website (http://www.andrewt.net/apathyclan/) (now's your chance to tell him to fix those links :p). If you dig around you can still find a lot of websites still around, like , Philby's (]Paul's[/url), Zeor's (http://www.freewebs.com/zero72/), etc. Not to mention all the later stuff still stashed away in (http://splapp-me-do.deviantart.com/) various (http://slickster.deviantart.com/) deviantArts (http://black-charizard.deviantart.com/). Really we could here all day.

You're awesome.

And those avatars! How he wanted us to believe that he made them all himself...

I think he was finally debunked when someone actually looked at that boomerang website he was linking to on his profile.
His family's business of homemade boomerangs.
With actual pictures of what was presumed to be him, IIRC.

*sigh*
This will be weird.
For nearly a decade now I've visited this forum almost daily.

Well then, see you soon elsewhere!

While on the subject, this (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34861) will forever remain in my memory as the most epic of art threads. There was never going to be another quite like it anyway.

Oh god, i never knew about the drawing in Page 4, reading my old posts is extremely painful.

It was a good thing that a couple of particular posts of mine on that thread were deleted. Some things are better left burried under the sands of time...

That thread was amazing, though.
