I found refreshing often helped, but only worked if the other player had also refreshed, needless to say I often logged out and back in after every new opponent

It happens far too often, the amount of times a browser refresh is required to solve this and a few other problems is incredible. Another example is whenever you change or make alterations to your islands layout.

In that particular case your better off pressing the home button and then going back to facebooks homepage and restarting the game.

In the meantime clear your browsers cache.
