View Full Version : Still unsure of which game to get...Help much appreciated.
Alright, so I've been wanting to get Revolution since before it came out, as I'd never played a Worms game before and figured this would be a good place to start.
...But having read all of the negative opinions on various aspects of this game here and elsewhere since its release, I've been considering more and more the idea of getting Armageddon instead, especially since I'd be playing the game mainly locally with friends, which seems to be more of an annoyance than fun with most people here when it comes to Revolution.
I know how highly many people hold Armageddon, and I know it's cheaper on Live (I'd be getting it for the 360). "Then isn't the choice a no-brainer?" you may ask. Well, no.
See, I wholly prefer the graphical style of Revolution, as well as the new physics objects, especially water. I also like the addition of classes, even though I'm unsure if they'd ever be used in local multiplayer due to how you have to go about gaining access to them. The nerfing of the rope and such I don't really mind, as I've never had past experience with it.
And as for local multiplayer, so long as each player has their own controller and profile, unique teams CAN be done, correct? Because if so, then it won't be an issue for me.
I've played the demos for both, and while I enjoyed each, I prefer the look of Revolution and like the additions that it brings to the table.
Yes, I know that Armageddon is a more polished game, but...Help. :(
So you are looking to buy either game on XBox, right? The proper title of the game is "2: Armageddon", to avoid confusion.
I'd say Worms Revolution offers a lot more than Worms 2: Armageddon does. When you see people talk about "Worms Armageddon" here, this is a different Worms game from 1999 available for PC, PS1 and Dreamcast if I remember correctly.

Oh, sorry.
Yes, I meant Worms 2: Armageddon. The one on the Xbox Live Arcade.

If you're hesitating between Worms Revolution and Worms 2: Armageddon, AND you're buying it for your PC, then Revolution is definitely the way to go. Way better, way more polished. Just make sure you have a good computer though because it's rather graphics intensive, and a lot of people complain about low framerate.
If you're buying a console game, then don't get Revolution. From what I've gathered, it's not very well optimized for console platforms (and by "not very well" I mean "horribly"), and the game will always run slowly.
The real Worms Armageddon is still one of the best Worms games ever, as a matter of fact, if you preordered Worms Revolution on Steam, you'd get a free copy of Worms Armageddon, but it's a bit late for that now. From what I've seen, it's pretty hard to find a retail copy of it nowadays, but I'm fairly sure you'll eventually find it with a good Google search.
I've played worms 2 armageddon on PS3 and I loved it, I've heard revolution is laggy on consoles so personally I'd get worms 2 armageddon. If you're on PC then I don't really know.. it depends.

Not that hard, both the US (http://www.amazon.com/Worms-2-Armageddon-Pc/dp/B000E23XNA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352544346&sr=8-1&keywords=Worms+Armageddon) and UK (http://www.amazon.com/Worms-2-Armageddon-Pc/dp/B000E23XNA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352544346&sr=8-1&keywords=Worms+Armageddon) Amazons always seem to have the W2/WA pack cheap. Then there's Mastertronic (http://www.mastertronic.com/productSoldOut.asp?pid=267&productLabelID=1) (ex-Sold-Out Software) as well, in case those two run out of copies.
Oh, sorry.

I believe you may have confused W:A and W2:A when reading reviews. I would re-check and make sure you didn't make that mistake before going ahead and making a purchase. A lot of the comparison posts on this forum are comparing W:R with the original W:A and not W2:A.

Don't all XBLA games have a demo version? If so, I recommend you download both demos, and see which one feels better to you.
As said before, the console version of Revolution is poorly optimized, and suffers from slow framerate and sluggish performance(my experience is with the PS3 version, but other people have complained of the same on the 360). Also, something you should consider if you want to play the game locally is that the way the game handles multiple teams is rather dumb (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=58625). This is being fixed in the PC version, but there's no word if they'll also fix the console versions yet, as far as I know.
Another thing about Revolution is that the fancy new 3D graphics make the game much less precise than it's predecessors, and it just generally feels less fun. It's slow and clunky.
Worms 2: Armageddon on XBLA is in my opinion the better game out of the two. At the very least, the game runs smoothly and actually lets you create separate, fully customized teams on the same profile. The only problem with it is that no one seems to play it online anymore, but this shouldn't be a problem if you want it for offline multiplayer only.
edit: And of course, as mentioned before, the best possible worms experience yo u can have is the original Worms: Armageddon on PC. You can often find it on Amazon for cheap, it runs on practically any windows PC from the past ten years, and it's 100% awesome.
The XBox version is running smoothly, whereas some, but not all PS3 consoles got framerate issues running the game, which is confusing enough.
Anyway, you are getting it on XBox. Framerate issues shouldn't be a reason to hesitate then.

Other users have complained about framerate problems on the Xbox version as well.

Yeah, I've played both demos. The Armageddon I was talking about is the HD port for the 360/PS3 (The only one you can get on Xbox Live).
Armageddon ran very smoothly in the demo I played, and the controls were more precise. I DID notice that Revolution was a bit clunkier in terms of controls, but I didn't really have issues with the framerate (Not in the demo, at least).
Like I said, I prefer the graphical style of Rev over Armageddon's, as well as the physics objects and water.
Not really sure why some are saying the framerate is horrible on the 360 while others say it's not, though. Does the game run noticeably worse in the full version as opposed to the demo, or are people misinformed on how the 360 version runs and are simply assuming it runs the same as it does on the PS3?
EDIT: I actually ended up getting Revolution. I'll be playing it tonight locally with friends, so I guess we'll see if it was a regrettable decision or not...

This. I know for a fact the XBox versions runs smoothly, but chances are some XBox devices can't handle it anyways as I've also seen PS3 devices running the game smoothly, I'm still confused how this is even possible.
Stop jailbreaking and installing unapproved 3rd party software to your devices, people :p I'm just kidding, obviously.

I could swear I saw people saying the 360 version had the same issue, but I can't find the posts. Maybe I misread something. But that's why I suggested you gave the trial a go first.
In any case, the game can be enjoyable. Most of my problems with it(besides the poor optimization on PS3) are summed up on this review: http://www.polygon.com/game/worms-revolution/3049
That, plus the lack of customization and gameplay depth. But if you're just going to play it every now and then with friends, you'll probably enjoy it just fine. It's a good party game. I just wish it was more than that.

Played it with friends over the weekend, and it was fun enough. Didn't get to play it as much as I'd have liked, though.
As for slowdown, the game ran perfectly when on normal Deathmatch maps, but when we did the Fort mode, the game would slow down to - I'd say - 15 or 20 FPS often during turns. It didn't make the game unplayable, but I was surprised at how many framerate dips there were, and how often they happened.
But yeah, I'm pretty sure the framerate is tied to how much land is on the screen, as the game ran fine with a normal map, but experienced a lot of slowdown when trying to load two forts.
