View Full Version : First impressions.

As a long time supporter and fan of worms and the worms franchise, it has only taken me a couple of minutes to get a first impression here.

First off, I do know the importance of a game tutorial (for the facebook market). A poor tutorial has a huge drop-off rate after the tutorial is complete. But, worms is an old game (Amiga 500). While worms does need a tutorial for beginners, a very large portion of worms players are probably seasoned veterans (ie me), and find the tutorial very very condescending and timewasting.

First impressions are worth a lot. Get the tutorial right. When playing on a large/wide screen the tutorial goes from the right side of the screen directly to the left side of the screen, making your arrow unnoticeable, and the user has to figure out what he's doing wrong. He's still looking right and the tutorial is now on the far left - a bit jarring. To fix this, you need to take into account that people aren't playing on 4:3 1024x768 screens. Larger/scalable graphics. Try not to force the user to move their eyes so much (all users are retarded). Instead of the arrow being verticle on the far left, it could be horizontal and more to the middle - closer to where the users eyes were left from the last step of the tutorial. In the tutorial, it appears that the terrain is not destructable. (that almost made me quit right then).

After the tutorial. Clearly I have done something wrong already. My first game against the professor who as 20 hp per worm, I have only 1 attack, which is skip go. So, I lost without firing a bullet. After the game, some crates drop and I collect them with my mouse (not by walking into them like I was expecting from every other worms game). So, after collecting 5 or so crates, I challenge the professor again. This time they have 50 hp. And this time I do have a weapon. I have 2 shots of a shotgun. Needless to say, I can't kill the whole team with that. I lose again. Not a good start.

All of the weapons appear to be very dull compared to every other worms game. 2 shots of a shotgun barely dent the terrain. A well placed bazooka now only hits for 30, and I'm sure that wont leave a crater like it used to.

Worms graphics have always been good. While I do know the limits of flash's graphics (painfully well). You can squeeze more out of it. If you zoom in, the ground becomes pixelated. If you zoom out, you get jaggies. If performance is the issue, try not using flash's default displaylist, or try out stage3d/starling.

It appears that I have some hard and soft currency in the game (for beta testing purposes I seem to have enough). So, I look to the shop to buy a weapon because I used my only 2 shots of my shotgun on losing my last game. And the only option for bazooka is to test it.

If this post gets a response, I'll keep testing. If not, then this version of worms is the worst so far. (worms3d anyone?).

Cheers for the feedback. A lot of what you said are bugs and should be fixed in the later builds.
Everything is constantly evolving and we hope you keep coming back to see it grow up and help us in making a great Worms game :)

Hey iamgotenks, a lot has changed in the game since you posted this. I'm just wondering how you're finding it now?

As for the fact that you only had skip, that was regrettably, a bug which we have thankfully fixed now. It was a very rare bug, that happened under very random circumstances, so you were very unlucky to encounter it.

If you've got anymore feedback we'd be really interested to hear it. You can reply the tutorial by hovering over the Professor & selecting "Tutorial"
