Your one-stop shop for completely* unconnected randomness! With any luck, having one big pit to siphon everyone's random thoughts into means we can keep the rest of the forum pretty neat and tidy. Well, that's my excuse anyway. Go hog wild.

To start the ball rolling, how about, I don't know... pizza! I like Hawaiian myself, which I appreciate makes me the mortal enemy of a good number of people. Don't care. I think it works well. Feel free to either talk about pizza or not talk about it at all, because you'd rather talk about screwdrivers or little solar powered spinny things or whatever.

* may not be completely, Dot Power Incorporated cannot be held responsible for sequences of posts that string together in an apparently coherent order, this does not affect your statutory rights although how it could I don't really know anyway whatever.

A forum rule is that any post not keeping within the bounds of a topic is removed.
This thread has no topic, hence no bounds. Hence any post is allowed.

Or, the rule is that any post not on the particular topic is removed.
This thread has no topic, and so no post can be on it. Hence no posts are allowed.

Maths analogy: If a topic is a large set and posts are members or subsets of that topic, then is an offtopic thread an empty intersection or an empty union? (Ignoring the required notion of a bounding set as per ZFC).

Regardless, this post uses the word Maths and hence is definitely not allowed.

Making a running character or a properly moving mouth are two different things, I'd almost say the character is easier :p Anyway, try animating a mouth from 2 artwork images using Corel Draw and a free gif program :(

And use a different program, ffs. Your compression is terribad.

Same problem as above, I haven't had a decent art program since I lost my PSP7 folders when I reinstalled Windows over a year ago. I've been in a real computer crisis of some sort. The free gif program I found on the web is indeed terribad at compressing datas.

And after all, I only wanted to see what the heavy talking would look like with that giant mouth he has. I'd also take into consideration I have about zero experience with animating.

Well, it's sort of random to throw in criticism for my avatar in a non-art-related thread anyways, and since I

1.) did not draw the images in the animation
2.) don't have any better art programs than Microsoft Paint and Corel Draw
3.) have no experience in animation whatsoever

The form to "prove the account is really yours" asks you the most absurd crap nobody would ever remember (like the exact date you registered the account, or the exact subjects of the last 10 emails you've received), and apparently they mark down everything you get wrong. In the end the only solution was to just call up support directly (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support) and whine to them about it, because arbitrarily locking people's email accounts causes a ton more issues than it solves.

Oddly enough, after resubmitting the form last night, only changing ONE word, they decided that was sufficient proof it was really me. On another note, why is the size limit for the avatar 9.8 KB? Has it always been like that? I mean I had to reduce the size to 77x77px which was the smallest size that could be compressed to fit in the limit (compressed 33%). Even 5 KB more in the limit would be a huge improvement.

So Disney now owns Lucasfilm(and all subsidiaries) and is wasting no time in setting up a new Star Wars trilogy with a date of 2015 mentioned for Star Wars Episode 7. Honestly, I will give it a chance, as Disney has done quite well with Marvell. I just hope they bring the series closer in line with the originals, but I do worry they'll end up a little too light hearted.

George Lucas is being relegated to "consultant" for the new films, so they'll immediately be better than anything he's made since, and including, Return of the Jedi.

31 Oct 2012, 02:06
Well JarJar should be long dead by the time Episode 7 takes place, so there is hope. I just wonder how Disney will take the overall theme, episodes 4-6 are considerably darker than 1-3, even in just the battle scenes, in eipisodes 4-6 atleast the rebels had faces which added some humanity to the battles. Episodes 2/3 had two faceless armies battle it out, and one being droids has less of an impact on the viewer. I hope the new trilogy does not take this aspect, as only so many movies can involve chopping up robots. They can leave the clone wars show for that.

And I think thats enough mindless blabbing about a movie I know nothing about.

Edit: As for rotj, although I agree it is the worst of the first trilogy, to improve it vastly, replace those teddybears with some other alien, something not deliberately cute, and already the movie would improve. I enjoy most of the rest of the movie, and, in my opinion, it has some of the best space battles in the series, although the only redeeming factor is ep3 is its opening battle, it doesn't have the same desperate last stand of ep6.

Not so much a sign of the times as it was Lucas' insistance that the political minutiae of the Star Wars universe would be fascinating to fans, when obviously it isn't.

Lucas isn't involved anymore as anything other than a consultant, which is bloody marvelous - the two good films in the series are the ones that he made when he wasn't surrounded by toadying yes-men.

Well, JarJar being a clumsy clown isn't inherently bad.
C3PO is basically the same, with added annoying smartassness.

What really annoyed me was the battle against the droid army, where he single-handedly took out tanks and several enemies without a scratch in a Buster Keaton slapstick sketch.

Also, it's weird to see the same clown become an ambassador for Naboo in Ep. 2.

They changed because Chewie was shown to be adept with technology, so they made mini wookiees. Honestly though, it would have been reasonable that Chewie could learn about technology while traveling with Han, and the rest were ignorant of how it works. Although the entire sequence of them being captured would have to be reworked.

The TV series currently still playing on CN needs to die in fire. When I was a kid, Jar Jar was my favourite character

No, to be honest, I was mostly attracted to C3PO and R2D2. They are basically functioning as both a comic relief and important characters, less cartoony than Jar Jar. Perhaps Jar Jar WAS a bit over the top.

Anyways, having a comic relief in a film is theoretically never a bad thing. For instance, pirate wars and romances are not really my favourite topics, so how did Pirates of the Caribbean become one of my favourite films? It's humorous. Most specifically, apart from all other silly scenes, I love the character of Jack Sparrow as a whole, including everything from his excentric behaviour to the hilarious quarrels with the undead monkey.

In my opinion, the best films out there are the ones that got everything. At times they make you cry or shock you, at other times they brim with excellent humour and action scenes.

While there is no problem with comic relief, Jar Jar serves no other purpose. None of his actions are deliberate and he serves no real benefit to the main characters, at least intentionally.

R2-D2 and C3-P0 on the other hand provide much benefit to the characters. R2-D2 performing tasks that help the main group, and C3-P0 acting as R2-D2's(and some alien's) mouth piece for the audience, helping to sell the setting and atmosphere of Star Wars.

Same with Jack Sparrow. He's funny and eccentric, but also has a much deeper level of character and has obvious motivations and is in general is a fairly rich character.

Jar Jar is just there. Being annoying, and to give him some sort of purpose his blundering actions sometimes benefit the characters. Sometimes.

Yeah, that has a lot to do with it. Characters in kids' media literally don't need depth, they just need to be simple archetypes. It sounds like it's a bunch of "kids are stupid" talk, but the proof is in pretty much anything by Roald Dahl.

Adventure Time Fans!

My school hosted a talk from Frederator Studios, the original owners of Adventure Time, and they showed us a new show by the name of Bravest Warriors, and given that they gave me a comic book for the show, I feel the need to pimp them out. The show is from Pendelton Ward, the same guy behind Adventure Time, and it uses the same sort of humor and visual style.

The show will be one of the shows to premier on YouTube's new Channels section as of next week. Check it out!

Windows 8 trip report:

- Desktop is awesome! It's faster, smoother, nicer and cooler than it ever was! Even faster performance, built-in ISO mounting, PDF reader, queuable file operations, explorer ribbon, swankier task manager, etc. Definitely makes this a worthy upgrade.

- Metro is horrible! It's slower, bulkier, clunkier and weirder than anything else! And I don't just mean "oh no they changed the Start Menu" because frankly if you were still using it by Windows 7 instead of pinning everything to your taskbar and desktop what is wrong with you. But every single app is somehow much worse than even their Microsoft desktop counterparts. You will be amazed as they managed to make even Solitaire take a million years to startup and even clunkier versions of Windows Live Apps. Just ignore it and hope it goes away (if you really crave for a start menu, just get this (http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/)).

TL;DR: Ignore Metro and it's awesome.

I actually disagree with this. I find Metro refreshingly clean and fast (similar to my thoughts when I first started using Google Chrome). I dont use many Metro apps on my desktops and laptops but I can see myself using them a lot when I buy a Surface Pro next year.

My only issue with Windows 8 is that Metro and the old desktop are sort of inter-mingled. I wish they'd either gone full hog and Metro-fied the desktop (by which I mean had Metro-style icons for Recycle Bin, Documents etc, and Metro-style icons for the built in Windows apps like Notepad) or made sure that Metro did not appear at all when you're on the desktop.

As it is, you can be working on the desktop and a Metro style notification appears on the right, or when you want to search the computer or shut it down you're forced to use the Charms bar.

Thankfully Metro won't be left as it is for the next three years. It is likely that Microsoft will release feature packs of sorts that will improve Metro, and hopefully by the time Windows 9 ships it'll be a much better product.

Also, since most of you would probably be interested in this: Windows 8 is pretty much about as fast as Windows 7 when it comes to playing games.
EDIT: actually, that might not be true if your computer doesn't have much RAM (2GB or less, I suppose). From what I've heard, Windows8 is a lot better with handling memory, so... maybe?

Personally... well, the new features are nice, but I really don't like the whole sterile UI. I always loved the shinier, see-through window borders and things like that. And now you have Windows 8, where everything's just a single solid colour without even any gradients, and it's just so... dull and lifeless.

Also, I'm at that annoying stage in getting used to it where I'm unable to tell if a small design thing is really genuinely annoying or if I'm just not used to it yet. In this case, the only thing I used the Start Menu for: searching for files.

franpa
8 Nov 2012, 01:11
I think Metro and the Desktop should have been available in separate products, not combined in to the one product. So desktop users get the desktop and tablet users get the touchscreen/metro and there is no intermingling/mess.

So desktop users get the desktop and tablet users get the touchscreen/metro and there is no intermingling/mess.That's the problem in itself, though. If they'd have just made ONE product, rather than trying to make two, there wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, they thought the same thing you're thinking in that they needed to have separate products for the two types of computers, and yet they didn't want to alienate their old users, and so it's a tangled, sloppy mess.

Not that I've used it, but I keep hearing the same things from everyone who has.

Okay, I was right on that Windows 8 wasn't worse for searching for things, it was just that I wasn't used to it enough. Once I got the hang of the keyboard shortcuts (for efficient searching alone, you need four of them), and figured out that that whole "Making files searchable" thing was *off* by default, I think it's pretty fine now.

If you couldn't tell, I've only been using it for about a week.

That's the problem in itself, though. If they'd have just made ONE product, rather than trying to make two, there wouldn't be an issue. I'd completely disagree, actually. Visually speaking everything's a bit of a mix between Windows 7 and Metro, although I'm not so against it as Cyclaws I guess, but functionally they're still kept rather separate. If you use the desktop only, then you won't use Metro at all except as a full-screen start menu, and if you have a tablet PC then Metro is not nearly a complete replacement for an ordinary Desktop.

There is literally no reason not to play Fez. Bring a pencil and a notepad if you want to get all the cubes!

These aren't 360 exclusives, but I've recently played and enjoyed:

De Blob 2! The original was wii exclusive and hampered by unnecessary motion control (shake to jump :p), the sequel streamlined the gameplay, nicked a few ideas from Mario galaxy and got released on HD consoles. It's a feast for the eyes and has a technical marvel of a dynamic soundtrack. Not very long, but you can find it for a fiver these days.

Darksiders! The story is a little po-faced, but a competent zelda-clone is nothing to be sniffed at. Couple that with a fun God-of-war-lite battle system and you're on to a winner. Again you can get it pretty cheap these days (the sequel's out too).

SplitSecond! Set on a fictional TV show where people race on special courses rigged with explosives, this game doesn't make a lick of sense. If you like burnout style risk/reward arcade racing and you also like everything to be exploding all of the time this is the game for you. Also has the most epic racing music.

Bastion! Listen to an amazing soundtrack while a gravelly voiced narrator guides you through one of the best videogame stories ever written. It's also a fun but simple linear action RPG with a fair amount of meat.

Honestly there's so many traps you'd have to race each course a fair few times to see them all. There's also a little strategy in learning what each trap does. You're going to want to set off the bus explosion closer than the giant swinging digger arm. There's also the strategy of 'do I save my power for the upcoming shortcut, or do I blow up the car in front and hope the one in front of that one activates it for me? Or should I hoard power for the course changer at the end of the current lap? Some traps are one use, some multiple and some open up additional traps on later laps: for example on one stage you can explode the supports on a bridge to drop them onto the track, do this on the first two laps and on the 3rd you can drop the entire bridge and change the course.

A new platform for giving away unused Steam keys for games.
Has an automatic auctioning/bidding system and randomly determines a winner.
Uses a virtual currency, based on your Steam account value (login via Steam API required).
(1$ = 100GW points)

Still requires trust in the other parties to actually send you a (valid) key, but a thorough reputation system is in place too.
The main advantage is, that there is no real money involved and people are basically giving away the masses of duplicate keys from all the indie game bundles.
(No idea whether giving keys away violates the TOS of those indie game bundles.)

If they can sort out the shading, I'll be happy. Right now the lighting is simply treating the models as 3D models, which really doesn't work well with the visual style. If they can punch up the cel-shaded look from the original, maybe make it look a little more like Okami, it'd be a day one purchase for me.

The screens shown so far are proof of concept stuff, intended as an exploration of possible art styles for the new WiiU Zelda. I imagine the actual product will look much better.

The WiiU controller seems like a shoe-in for the Tingle tuner. My main interest is whether they add in the dungeons cut from the original, and maybe do something about the Triforce quest.

I'm hoping they'll add an extra difficulty setting (Possibly mirroring the world like they've done for TP & OoT 3DS), boss rush mode, make the triforce quest less tedious, make the Command Melody faster to use (Don't have the game repeat the song perfectly whenever it is played?) and tone down the bloody bloom.

And yeah Tingle Tuner is virtually guaranteed to take advantage of the Gamepad.

New indiegala indybundle!

Pay what you want for:

Pathologic sort of brilliant, sort of unplayable horror game about surviving an epidemic from the extremely Russian Ice Pick Lodge
The Abbey cel-shaded murder-mystery point-and-clicker from the very Spanish Alcachofa Soft
Miner Wars Arena Top down 3rd person arena shooty action I guess?

Pay more than the Average (currently $5.30) and also receive:

Earth Defence Force: Insect Armageddon Americanized spin-off from the amazing EDF series. Flawed but fun b-movie bug slaughter with online co-op.
Miner Wars 2081 First person space shooty action in a persistent voxel-based world. Sounds a lot more like Minecraft than it looks.
Paranormal "A fully dynamic haunting-experience. Experience the horrors of a haunting that's never the same twice." apparently?
AN ADDITIONAL UNREVEALED GAME

Somewhat eclectic collection. I grabbed it for a steam copy of EDF:IA and because The Abbey sounds right up my alley. Pathologic is a game everyone should experience, but not necessarily one everyone should play themselves. The MinerWars titles look pretty dull, but Paranormal sounds absolutely nuts and could be interesting.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

I went to the midnight premiere for this area (not the London one ;)) last night/this morning/whatever.

I haven't had time to form a real opinion on it yet - I'd like to see how well it holds up to repeat viewings first - but my preliminary view that might change over time is that it's a good spectacle like the first one (Star Trek (2009)) was, but also significantly better than the first one with regards to plot, etc.

So, we now know that the "odd numbers suck" rule can be amended to "odd numbers suck, even numbers that are not multiples of 10 are good".

philby4000
9 May 2013, 22:26
I am well jelly. Star Trek 2009 was great fun, a real step up from the dross of TNG films.

My personal best to worst Star Trek list:

The Undiscovered Country (so good)
The Wrath of Khan (a close second)
The Voyage home
Star Trek 2009
The search for Spock (Christopher Lloyd is the worst Klingon ever, but a fun baddie nether the less)
The Final Frontier (Don't you judge me, bad plot but great character moments)
The Motion Picture (Glacial pace, but great imagery.)
First contact (a half decent action movie staring actors completely unsuited to being in an action film)
Insurrection (closest to capturing the feel of TNG on the big screen. Like a feature length, but slightly rubbish episode)
Generations (astonishingly poor)
Nemesis (Misery and whispering. Parallels to Khan don't help any)

I think you're being slightly unfair on First Contact - yes, the actiony bits on the ship were crap, but the bits on the planet were good.

Star Trek (2009) was indeed great fun to watch once, but it really doesn't hold up well to more than one viewing - there are a significant number of plotholes, the villain is very poor, etc. - I'm hoping/thinking the new film possibly isn't like that, but I'll have to see it again to pass judgement fully.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm really looking forward to The World's End.

This is probably the best dissection of the film I've seen: http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-trek/star-trek-09/

The most interesting part is when he compares it the original Star wars films. Just as it's not important that Luke can apparently just fly his X-wing all the way to Dagobah, it's not important that Scotty can teleport kirk half way across the Galaxy. The character's actions and motivations trump technical details.

Nero wasn't the greatest villain and is a little too close to the baddie from Nemesis for my liking.
I thought the idea of their crappy (and inexplicably pointy) mining ship being an incredible military threat just because of their future technology was at least a little interesting.

Still, I should hope Benedict Cumberbatch does a better job in the new one!

edit:

Looks alright. What was so urgent about the teaser trailer though? :p
I'm just a little bit hyped for it because it is a film directed by Edgar Wright and staring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The last time that happened they made Hot Fuzz. The time before that they Made Shaun of the Dead. these are two of my favorite films ever.

Muzer
10 May 2013, 02:03
I agree that minor technical details are unimportant, but I believe this isn't a minor issue - the whole star trek universe would be different if such things were "really" possible, and it would generally undermine a few things. That, however, is not my main gripe with the film. I'm talking about plotholes like, how does red matter destroy things half the time and send things back in time the other half? How did kirk manage to end up in the same cave as Nimoy; that's pretty damn lucky? Those are just two examples. The villain is incredibly weak as you said - little motivation and one dimensional. I do believe the same can be said for most characters - more caricatures. They do seem much more developed in this new film
