On each turn, is there a way to change which worm you want to battle with? Rather than going with assigned worm?

That was possible on Worms Armaggeddon on PSone!
But not in Worms: Battle Island.

Cool, thanks for the replies! I remember being able to do it in an old version for PC so I thought I was missing something. Now that I know it can't be done, I can relax :)

That options was available in the scheme settings of earlier games of the series. It tended to ruin the strategy so it was rather superfluent anyway.
