For the same reasons, "new" members are limited on the number of PMs they can send per day. Once you've been registered for a certain period of time (can't remember how long it is, but it's not long) and met the minimum post requirements, everything gets unlocked, including profile editing.

I don't believe we have visitor messages here, so that will remain "locked"
