View Full Version : New Worms:Armageddon icon
SgtFusion
11 May 2011, 05:07
I have made a new icon for Worms Armageddon. It is a shaded orange one kind of like the nuke symbol in the W:A logo (although not exactly the same). It includes all icon sizes (from 256x256 to 16x16) and all colour depths (from 32-bit colour to to 16-colour). Feel free to use it for whatever you want, but please give me credit for it.
The main difficulty in making it was getting the nuke symbol to look right. After that was done, the shading was easy. And since I used vector graphics, resizing was even easier.
UPDATE: The latest, best version is attached to this post.
UPDATE2: A slightly improved version is now attached to this post.
UPDATE3: A more improved version is attached to this post.
UPDATE4: A slightly improved version of UPDATE3 is now attached to this post.
UPDATE5: This is the final update. An icon pack of improved and compressed versions of all of the icons I've released in this thread has now been linked to in this post.
UPDATE6: A pack of icons for the various file formats W:A uses has been linked to in this post.
UPDATE7: A newer pack of icons containing all but one of the icons made so far has been linked to in this post.

I've seen quite a few attempts at a "new" W:A icon, and I have always been critical of how bold and/or flashy they are. But this set it very simple and quaint!
I'm going to use them from now on. Good job!

That's done. I've made two new icons for Wormkit. One is orange, and the other is green.

Good job. But i think it will better with conventional symbol proportions
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/CIS_WSH_part476_54539_7.pdf
Pages 2,4 :)
And i think if WA icon will be without black border, wormkit must be too... .dll version of wormkit (wormkitds) not need icon at all.
His WA icon has a border. It's not the same as his avatar.
As GreeN knows from our discussion in #worms yesterday, I agree with KMZ's proportions point.
SgtFusion
12 May 2011, 01:04
Thanks for directing me to that document, KMZ. I think you're right; it would look better if it had conventional proportions.
EDIT: I made a new W:A icon that has a nuke symbol with more conventional proportions. It's attached to this post.

Thanks for that, but it's not supposed to be completely based on the conventional radiation symbol. It's supposed to be at least partially based on the W:A symbol. I just thought it would look better with something nearer to conventional proportions (even without conventional positioning).
I linked that for correct (real AND Worms Armageddon, which both use the same) proportions. The correct proportions look the best in my humble opinion.

Okay, then. Here's one that has almost exactly the same proportions as (Beta Updated) W:A's icon.

The bigger versions of that one look really great! However, for some reason the border on the 16×16 version (the version I see the most) looks too thin.
SgtFusion

I kind of thought so too, but since I was using resized copies of the same vector image for every icon size, I couldn't make the outline bigger without making the larger sizes look weird. I should have realised that I could just edit the 16x16 one, which I have now done.

Oh, it's now an octagon. The .ico format supports semi-transparent pixels and Windows XP and above renders it properly. CyberShadow's icon makes use of that for smooth edges.
I realize I'm seeming picky, but I'm just giving you my humble opinion. I don't expect you to agree or adhere to what I like. I told myself I wouldn't get involved with this thread at first since I didn't want to mess with something you've clearly worked hard on. If you agree with me, that's fine, but please don't feel like my disagreements are forcing you to do something my way. I haven't contributed anything useful to the community for a while. I don't want to discourage others so much that they become so scared of doing things "wrong" that they stop doing them altogether like I have.

12 May 2011, 12:25
To make a circle look fine in 16x16 icons, just make sure the circle uses up the whole 16x16 area. There shouldn't be any problems without semi-transparency then.
Which colour depth are you viewing it at? It looks fine on my computer.Oh! Never mind. I was looking at page 12 instead of page 19; my mistake. Yeah, it looks very good. :)
I didn't think it'd make much difference, but you were right, Lex. The new version looks much better!

This is the newest and final version of my icon. There's not a whole lot of noticeable difference between this one and the last one I uploaded, but it is definitely improved. I used two concentric circles as a guide to make the "radiation rays" look more like they should.

I totally agree. This final version is excellent. :) Would you mind posting the SVG?
Also, a clarification of your license would be useful. I personally would pick CC0 (http://creativecommons.org/choose/zero/) for an icon like this, but that waives all your rights to the content so anyone can use it for absolutely anything, including stealing credit. However, if you want to maintain credit (attribution) for your work, the Attribution-ShareAlike (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/) license would be better. For a full selection of free distribution licenses explained very simply, see the Creative Commons licenses page (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/).

Unless you have some version of Paint Shop Pro, it wouldn't be much use to you. I used Paint Shop Pro's own image format (.pspimage) to create the icon graphics, because Paint Shop Pro is the only complex graphics editor that I really know how to use, and its own image format is the only one that lets me save images and keep vector graphics and separate layers. I can't save as .svg, unfortunately.
Oops. Apparently I finished my edit in my previous post after your last post and didn't see your post before saving.
Edit: I know I'm being really picky here, but although I love the colors and proportions in your icon, the 16×16 circular edge shape is slightly worse than the official icon's 16×16 circular shape. You can see a comparison attached. I wouldn't know how to fix this, but I'm pointing it out in case you care to.
SgtFusion
15 May 2011, 05:20
I don't know how I feel about copyrighting it, seeing as it's almost the same as the W:A icon, but with slightly different colours and shading.
Oops. I did it again.
Also, the licenses I recommended aren't default copyright. If you don't assign a license to your work, you will receive each region's default handling of copyright. In probably all regions, unlicensed works aren't in the public domain by default.

I've made the border on the 16x16 icon slightly thinner. It now has a width of 1.50 pixels instead of 2.00 pixels. The first version (the one that had a border that was too thin) had a border with a width of 1 pixel. This one even looks okay in 256 colours (it's a circle rather than an octagon).

This is the last update, I promise. I figured out how to compress my icon so that it would be only 115KB in size rather than the huge 727KB it was before. I also made improved versions of my WormKit icons, as well as a new one (a yellow WormKit icon). I've put all four of those icons in this icon pack:

If you look closely, the inner edges of the "rays" don't outline a circle; more like a rounded-edged triangle, and the circularity of the outer edges of the "rays" doesn't correspond exactly to the circularity of the outer circle. It's more noticeable with the full-size version (512x512?).

P.S.: If anyone thinks I should alter the copyright for this one since it's more similar to the one raffie linked to than my first one, please tell me. It's based on the one I originally made, but I did kind of get the idea from the one raffie linked to.
The highlight makes it look like the icon was a knob, while the shade runs straight. That looks a bit weird. I mean, if that's supposed to be a shade... might be a reflexion of some sort :p

In Windows 7, you need 3rd party software to change file type icons, like this: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html

My suggestion after I first looked at these:
Make the center graphics larger, please? (I mean the terrain/worms/bomb/film with the WA icon.)
The current ratio (130/256) looks so small when the icon is viewed in 32×32 or below.

How should that be possible? In a DLL it would be possible.

I've put them in an icon library. Thanks for the idea, franpa! The download link above now refers to it instead of the one with separate icons. Also, thank you all for your constructive criticism. It helped to make the icons a lot better.
Doesn't that mess with checksums?
How should that be possible? In a DLL it would be possible.
Windows is one of the few programs that use DLL files instead of ICO files. Most programs I know of feature an ICO file with multiple icons or it is somehow integrated into the programs EXE file.
No, an ICO file only features different sizes and color depths for a single icon, but not different icons at once (it is not possible to have a size / color depth combination more than once).
A DLL or EXE can contain several icons, embedded as resources.
E.g. an ICO file is a container for one single "icon" in different sizes or bit depths
and a DLL or EXE can be used as a container for several ICO files.
Mhm okay, must be just bad memory on my part then.

I was very inspired to click it; I've actually started work on a music video called "The Downloads Spurn Me So", I was so inspired.
However, it keeps doing nothing apart for adding "?cau2=403tNull" to the end of the URL. I even tried it on Chrome and IE, and nothing, so I'm rather confused. It's a javascript link, so maybe that's the issue I'm having. I only realised that the OTHER download links were ads once it was re-directing me to other sites.
