View Full Version : Palette corruption after a game
Ok, I know this game has a custom palette or whatever, but there is one strange problem I'm getting:
After completing a training mission or deathmatch.. come to think of it, almost anything that takes me back to the menu system after completion (so.. like everything? lol), the menu is done in a wonderful 2 color palette.. and what's more, usually that means the entire screen is black, save for a few white outlines here and there, and I have to "stab in the dark" to try to hit the buttons I think are correct.
I'm assuming that somewhere between the unloading of the in-game stuff and the menu that focus changes to another program, causing the palette to... do whatever the heck it's doing. I am not, to my knowledge, using any programs that would steal the game's focus like that, at least while playing the game.
Anyone else have this problem? I know about the freakish palette swap during the game that makes the screen look like candyland, that doesn't happen to me anymore.. now it's just this.
check palette.log in the games folder via notepad.
use WkColourFix.dll
or close all instances of explorer.exe before launching the game.
check palette.log in the games folder via notepad.
Checked for one but mysteriously couldn't find it.. didn't search hard, I'll try again if:
use WkColourFix.dll
doesn't work.. but I sure like the looks of that. Haven't heard of it before, (kind of new to worms community) but 'Ooh, dlls that fix things! :D'
As far as:or close all instances of explorer.exe before launching the game. goes... meh...
Anyway, I'll give that second one a try.. thanks! I'll report back when I locate that file and plug it in.

wkcolorfix is a quick fix and doesnt work for everyone. the only surefire ways around the color bug are to play without explorer or run WA in a virtual pc. also im sure i read that this will be fixed in the next beta update (dont quote me)
to play without explorer:
alt, ctrl, del, then kill the explorer process. on the applications tab on the task manager ther is a button called "new task", click that and search for WA.exe or Wormkit.exe whichever you use. you should be able to minimize the game or load the WA front end without color bug issues. you can alt + tab to switch between running apps.
remember, to use the wkcolorfix you have to have wormkit and the .29 beta update installed, and you have to run wormkit.exe instead of the normal WA.exe.
for information on running WA on a virtual pc look here (http://worms2d.info/Installing_WA_on_Virtual_PC)

Silly me... the .29 update solved the problem. :o Suppose I could have tried that first~
Anyway, thanks for the help! Gotta love playing this without that annoying color issue anymore!

You all misunderstood what he means.
THIS IS NOT THE EXPLORER.EXE PROBLEM!
From the ReadMe:
Known Issues/Bugs -> Usability issues
When returning to the front end from a finished game session, the palette sometimes is not correctly set and is black and white. Minimising and restoring fixes it, but without this step it's necessary to operate blind.
You can't minimize the fron-end in vista/7 without it crashing...

Gah... ok so I went home after work the day after I applied the update (and claimed it was fixed), started up the game, and lo and behold, color corruption every time I started any type of game or went back to a menu! I'm talking the old, pinkish palette corruption, not the black and white junk.
To make a long story short, it's back to it's unfixed state, and I discovered something interesting. If I have any windows explorer folders open, the game will corrupt itself when loading anything. However, if no folders are open, the game works fine, except when loading back to the menu, then it turns black and white.
No idea why this was working temporarily after I installed the update...
Oh and by the way, palette.log reports crss is changing it~
