View Full Version : A Look at W2:A and All that is Missing.

Let me preface any lengthy doctrine with the fact that I have been a Worms fan for a long time. By the time Worms 2 came out, I continuously played the demo on my PC until I had every move covered. I also bought Worms Armageddon and had some very memorable times. I quite literally grew up with the Worms franchise, and Armageddon was my favorite. It was for this reason, (as well as my transgression to Macintosh computers) that I bought the new XBox 360 release. I am still playing it and enjoying it for what it is worth. Yet, I do have some very serious qualms about the game. Chiefly, I am upset about the lack of resemblance to the old Armageddon, the limited weaponry, and the continuing lack of some basic editing options.

The first thing I noticed was that there were a few bugs that ranged from irksome to horrendous. I do not plan to tread this territory, as I know The Team is already working on the glitches that the members of this forum have pointed out.

The item that worried me the most was that W2:A is missing some of the essential items that made the original Armageddon worth playing repeatedly, and as if I need say it, fun. Armageddon was simply fun. This new version, though entertaining in it's own right, resembles the rather lackluster Worms game for XBLA. (If anything, it is more of a spiritual sequel, if one would dare to compare them in such a way.)

There were so many ways to improve on that first XBox 360 release, which is not to mention the many ways to bring back a bit of the old experience. For example, the return of fire is perhaps one of the greater improvements. The return of old equipment and addition of new weaponry was also well received. Though still, I remain unsatisfied. With fire now back in play (begging the question of why it ever left), I wonder where the trusty Flamethrower has gone? Wouldn't that be the obvious choice to get the most use out of the new mechanic? Also, where are the many other weapons that turned Worms into a creative and destructive game. I refer to the sheep launcher, the homing pigeon, and mole bomb, as well as the battle axe, the mini gun, and the subtle handgun. Oh, and how shameful it would be to forget the fun that was had with the mine strike, the Ming vase, and Mike's (notorious) Carpet Bomb. Even the utilities like worm select and 2X damage are gone.

All of these arsenal items made Worms into the game I saw it as. A wide selection of weapons meant more creative scenarios for destruction. Minimizing the selection from one game to the next seems to me a leap in the wrong direction.

Speaking of "creative scenarios," I have been wondering what happened to the campaign in W2:A. To me, in order to wear the "Armageddon" title, the game has to mix things up a little bit. Each mission, not including the 'puzzles' of course, is centered killing the enemy worms and nothing else. I cannot help but muse at lack of variety. What happened to different goals? There are certainly no missions to protect certain worms or grab specific crates in this new game. Is simply surviving testing situations no longer fun and gratifying?

Besides the mission and weapon selections, I find that editing option have dwindled down a bit, or at least changed. I realize that an actual terrain editor instead of a randomizer would take up a lot of space and may not be as feasible what with the XBox 360 controller. I do, however, miss the time when one could poke some holes in a solid chunk of land, actually place the worms inside their separate caverns, and let them have at it. Also, a lack of damage settings is something profound. Even Worms Armageddon for the GameBoy Advance had that. Still, editing options are the least of my concerns.

What I would like to see would be the release of some heavy Downloadable Content (and preferably at a low cost, but I know Microsoft has the final say). There is so much that can be customized and added to the game, and the tools are already there. The worms need more weapons and a few new missions, lest the days of Nasty Crew vs. Dodgy 8 on Cars after school be gone for everyone.

Just logged in to say I agree with most of it.

I bought the Worms 2 for XBLA just so I could play worms against more opponents than there are online in W:A nowadays. I hate the shopper mode and I really suck in comparison to whoever is still playing the game online, so I really wanted to play a new game against new players. However, whenever I play, I can't help but feel that the game lacks features that a 10 year old game has. That saddens me deeply while I play.

Also, why the hell can't we zoom in a little closer?

Just a quick note from me to say I agree with everything said too.

1) I'd also like to add MORE FORT CHOICES PLEASE!
2) More ranked gameplay modes/types.
3) Do something to stop the quitters so we can play full games.
4) More customisations of worms.
5) Brown bread (Coz every list should be at-least 5 bullet points).

custom maps could be stored on external storage mediums ( including non-official Microsoft Hardrives) eliminating storage problems.

I agree completely. With all of the above. Someone needs to make a Worms "Ninety-Five Theses" and nail it to Team 17's door. All I can do is hope that the Team listens to their loyal fans as well as their customers.

I played worms through out the years, and when I played the xbox live version of Worms 2, I simply assumed that weapons and options were missing because I was playing the demo, then I finally get the full game and come to realize that theyd nerfed tons of the options, I wont even talk about all the lack of weapons, which even though "not necessary" were an add of flair that made it fun and entertaining. My biggest issue is simple lack of game options. The sheer lack of things that you can do to actually change gameplay is staggering, which is large in part due to the fact that instead of making the game functional and giving options, they like many developers decided to make the game "pretty".

For example, since ... I think it was 1998 when i started playing worms to begin with, my friends and I loved playing the same custom senario:

Many uses of small arms and hand to hand, limited explosives, limited ninja ropes and a short sudden death timer, keep health upon sudden death, double water rise rate. First off, Why cant I alter any factors to do with sudden death? The only thing I can do is tell it how long I want to wait for it to occur. No heath changes, water rise rates, nothing. When Sudden death hits, you better be dug in, because youre wicked dead otherwise.

Dont get me wrong, the game is "ok" as is, but taking out so much that made the game great, I can say that I wont be buying any Team17 products until they get their act together. A patch for game options (not even weapons) like the water rise in sudden death, and keeping your health for instance, would do wonders for this game. Its just lame, that I spent 800 points to play this game with friends, but 90% of them dont want to play because its not half as good as a game from over a decade ago that we used to play. Its just sad.

1) worms dont look funny when they fall in the water like the previous games, they should make there corpses stay there and float not just vanish

2) needs to be high def 1080p

It feels like a chinsy arcade game that you play once and then get bored of.

I want worms to skip across the water again when you hit them with the bat.

Good times.

Guys, I hate to point out the obvious. But seriously. Ever since W:A for the PC, the Worms franchise has repeatedly dumbed down each subsequent game.

When I read the inital post on this topic, it was as if I myself had written it. My buddy and I used to play the WORMS 1 demo until we had mastered it - I kid you not - with OUR TOES. Ninja roping on a keyboard - with our toes.

I'm just saying that it is sad that what is probably my favorite game of all time has - for the most part - been kinda phoned in over the years after W:A. No offense to "the team" - I know that more than fan complaints go into the production of a game.

Thank goodness Cybershadow and Deadcode have been making slow, yet incredible, updates to the original game. And I find myself still playing W:A after all these years. My production team and I even rereleased all our original custom maps (with greatly improved graphics) just because of how much better W:A has gotten. (our website has em www.mnpp.net (http://www.mnpp.net)- shameless plug there... :))

As far as W:A2 for PC... I really do have my hopes up for this one for three major reasons:

1. It will be the first 2D worms game released for PC in quite a long time.
2. PC games generally have more customizability.
3. Fans who can program can make the game better with tools and editors and the like.

So while there might not be too much you can do about the 360 version (aside from DLC), there may still be hope for the PC. I'm really wanting to play our levels in full 24-bit color - something that even the great W:A still can't do.

The game will be released in Steam.....is harder to make mods and powerups for Steam apps than no-steam aps due to compatibility and Steam Client checking issues (correct me if im wrong)
Lests hope that, T17 will update their game at least once a year.....the Steam app updating system makes it easier to download the updates.

Yes there antipiracy measures will probably lock out modified copies of the game from playing online/validating.

Not really, Valve supports modding games on Steam, doesn't mater if it's modding one of their games or games by other company's. The only thing is if Team 17 supports the modding community and release some editors which if released, could be found in the "Tools" tab in Steam.

Well that is a hopeful comment.

I personally am not asking for much. I just want a way to import custom sized levels. All my levels exceed size limitations on the vanilla W:A and I would also assume on the previously released console versions of Worms.

The other thing that is important to me is a fairly editable option-set for fine tuning my maps. Not anything crazy (although crazy is always welcome), just something that let's me make sure my maps are played the way I intended them to be.

Of course, a mission editor and other variety would be great as well, although I am certainly not expecting it.

I'm with you guys. Worms 2 was my start to the series, I loved Armageddon World Party. I'd pay $50 for a current generation World Party in a heartbeat. It was great since it was easy to learn, hard to master, had tons of weapons, a level creator that had the learning curve of Microsoft Paint, and it just is one of the best games ever. I'm psyched for a new 2D Worms on PC. But to hear that it's missing things really is depressing.

I still play it on the PC. You can buy the real game for pennies. I don't care about your XBOX or any of that muck.
