Then some time after that he just got banned......

From what i've heard here: http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34250&page=6

Wait, are you actually staying? Or are you just making another "I'm back guys" thread, maybe a few posts in other threads, then disappearing again in about 3 days; just like nearly everyone else who 'comes back' does?

For the last couple of years I've visited this forum once, or maybe twice a year tops, just because there is a lovable creepiness about it. It's a lot like visiting your old kindergarten and find some of the kids you knew from ages ago still playing the same games in the same place.

Scotworm
29 Jul 2009, 13:28
t17 is like watching someone crazier than you become slowly crazier

yo why was cosmico banned

hmm...

this particular kindergarten also happens to be a ghost town. I'm sure we had nothing to do with it though.

yo why was cosmico banned

or maybe we did.

True but it was much more their paranoid, irrational reaction against it all, the ''Your post will not be visible until a moderator has approved it for posting'' for new members which killed the forum (how many new members can you realistically expect to stay after that?).

Find it pretty funny how dependent internet forums are on a steady flow of newbies, despite their annoying behavior. They simply keep the social dynamics from getting all too boringly established and rigid, and people either seem to leave or stay just to complain about the forum sucking in their absence.

Sadly the moderrator aproval thingummy was implemented for a reason, so we got a choice between new members or pictures of gigantic cocks.

I'll not be too sad once this place finally shuts down.

That was more to stop the pornospam floods and the general spambots. Most of the posts are approved within 12 hours of being posted, many are approved much quicker. Many of the new members who have arrived since the new games have been announced this year have got past the premoderation and continued to post.

Plus it gives the mods something to do :p

Which, of course, made a lot more sense than simply requesting more moderators and with different time zones than the UK one.

Most larger forums experience periods of spam floods from time to time (the difference lies in how effectively one deals with them), but the people behind those will tire eventually, especially with proper moderation. Using premoderation for years that undeniably makes many newcomers lose their interest hurts a forum a lot more.

thomasp
29 Jul 2009, 20:13
If I remember rightly the real reason for introducing premoderation was that the forum was attacked on a number of separate occasions for prolonged periods. Having mods in different timezones wouldn't have helped due to the large numbers of spammers that were registering to circumvent bans (IP bans weren't working due to that wonderful invention known as a proxy) and continuously posting for an hour or two at a time.

The premoderation also goes some way to reducing the load on the forum servers believe it or not. The more mods we have, the more "reported post" e-mails are sent out, and on one porn attack I once got around 40 in the space of an hour (and all the other mods would have received them as well). And given the state of the server (all the recent database errors, etc), keeping the load down is a good thing! :p

Granted the current premoderation system isn't foolproof, but it is considerably better than the system the forum originally had - moderating every single post before it went live. I know of a few very large, successful and popular forums that won't activate your account until its been "approved" by an administrator, which takes a couple of days usually. So, on that basis its more the general atmosphere of the forum and its members than the moderation itself that can make or break a forum.

One final point - the only people to complain about the premoderation is those who have never been affected by it :p Never heard or seen any complaints from new members who have been through it, apart from one or two posts in the queue wondering why their posts haven't been appearing.

Random Worm Cannoneers we were called.

I should never have left to get into Clan Dark Matter just for the fame and fortune. :p
Also, we should never have agreed to merge Random Heroes with a clan that's based on a single, obscure scheme, which "worm cannon" is.

How about reactivating Random Heroes, Bunsy?
My other clan (D1s (http://d1s.no-ip.info/)) after xDMx is dead anyway.

He called himself Fwd. Adm. (http://forum.team17.co.uk/member.php?u=18768) to be exact.
I still find it hilarious that of all his stolen, ripped off avatars the final one says "invincible". :D
