View Full Version : Spawns Are Rediculous

Alright, I played this one game where it was absolutely unfair. It was a forts game and I had a castle or haunted house, it's the default one.
I had two of my worms spawn next to a barrel on the top of the castle, and the other two worms spawn on the ground in the backside.
What's worse is that the opponent took the first turn, and then when it was my turn, the worms next to a barrel didn't get to go! My first worm was at the bottom.
I couldn't do anything except turtle the whole match and attack when I had a good chance. I was facing a sub-par player, but that is not the point. If I was playing anyone smart enough to hit that large barrel by my worms, I'd certainly die. I had two packs of two worms, I mean come on! I've had bad spawns, but I played them off because I had girders and other things to correct it.
This is absurd.
Well yes. Sometimes you lose matches because the odds are stacked against you. That... that's what real wars are all about, actually.
Go read Ender's Game.

I agree facing the odds is part of the battle, but I can't say it wouldn't be nice to have a but of logic behind the placements instead of pure dumb luck.
Sometimes the game does change the spawn before the game happens so it must do some checking somewhere.
Personally I'd like to see something like "make sure all worms on a team are space at least N distance away from each other on either the X or Y axis"
And then follow a similar rule when placing barrels/mines.
I know Team17 isn't really concerned with ultra competitive players, and that isn't their target.
But even casual fun can be spoiled by royally messing a player over on spawn.
Is never fun to lose, but it's far far worse when you lose and it's not your fault, nor the skill of your opponent, just dumb luck screwing you over for no good reason!
I feel your pain, man! :)

When you say you can't have fun if you lose, its a sure sign you're far more competitive than most of the players.
The comparisons between this and complaints about SSB:Brawl nearly makes me confident that "SPAAAAADGE" will become a catchphrase!

I think you are taking me a bit out of context, here. I didn't say the only fun in the game is by winning.
I've had a ton of fun in games that I did not win, heck I enjoy watching the rest of the players fight it out; I think Worms is just that entertaining. :D
But in a battle of Lose vs Win, the winner will in fact be Win. LOL
What I was referring to was simply that moment when you lose, I don't know anyone that would say "man, losing that game was really fun"; or "I'm glad I lost, it's fun to lose!"
You can still have fun if you lose, that doesn't make the loss itself the part that was enjoyable.
That said, I'd definitely put myself firmly on the "competitive" side of the fence. But not the extreme that also makes me a poor sport or a bad loser. I prefer playing games with people that are good enough to beat me; the challenge is rewarding IMO.

Oh don't get me wrong, I still have fun if I lose just from bad spawns. :P
I just wanted to rant a little, because when one team gets screwed over, competitive or not, it brings down the fun level, a lot.

And when half your team starts the game next to an explosive barrel or an inch away from the water, it's a sure sign your game is poorly designed. And while a "teleport in" feature would solve all of these problems, I don't remember Worms Armageddon ever starting people right next to hazards like that, even when I was using random placement.

it's just a tad rediculous.

Because the WA random placements attempts to stop two objects from placing too close to each other (as long as there's free space)
I'm still waiting for a valid reason as to why cutom teleporting before the match was left out. Although I hope Team17's stance on it would be "because it's too complicated and would confuse casual gamers".

I thought it was just me! Lol. You won't believe how many matches I've lost BECAUSE of diabolical spawns. Just last match I had 1 guy spawn on an edge, and 2 next to a barrel on the very edge and 1 worm in a hole in the scenery, covered by mines. His first go killed 2 outright next to the barrel - knocked one into the water, and did over 100 damage on the other -, my go is the worm surrounded by mines, and to get anywhere I would have to blowtorch or teleport out, then it's his go, hits my worm off the map. 1v4 in 3 turns, over spawns that a child could rape you with.

While I haven't lost much matches because of this problem, one Crazy Crates match put my worms in stupid positions, 3 were stuck in objects, while 1 was free to rope around.
All 4 of of his worms were free to rope around, and so he won the match easily, because I had to blowtorch out of the object my worms were stuck in when it was my go. Really stupid and unfair placements.
Then one match both pairs of my worms were right next to each other.

Unless the worms that were stuck went first, and the open worm went last.

Spawns can be very annoying. I had a game where 3 worms spawned beside each other in crazy crates, the opponent started and bannana bombed all 3 in the water. I was in luck as my other worm was tucked away nicely. It was 4 on 1 I only lost by 1 life point in the end, thanks to a good bit of guerilla worming:) so i lost but oh well it was a moral victory after playing a cocky opponent.
Bring back worm placement at the start of the game or at least the choose worm option like the original armageddon.

I still think there should be a "muligan" option at the start of matches to respawn your worms if the placement is horrible.
Or even better, the ability to place your own worms wherever you want.

I like this idea. I like this idea very much!

Hmm not a bad idea. Maybe a bit like the emergency teleport utility for your whole team. Could be worse, could be better.
Actually the placements could be even more horrible afterwards.

Still worth the risk if your placements are horrible anyway.
