Damnit you guys! ALL OF YOU HAS THEMS ARRRGHH!

There is a trend though: it seems as though anyone who has been here since 2003 or before has one.
Therefore I can only assume there is a discussion area only open to people who have been here a certain amount of time, and from that I can guess that someone probably posted a thread and a link to a website that generates them.

It's also missing the 3D effect, but good job!

The truth is that all these avatars have been painstakingly drawn frame by frame. the trick to getting the 3d effect right it to just this simple formula:

n-(s*f)/S= rotation offset

where n is the number of frames, s is the speed of rotation, f is the final image (and therefore is always equal to 7) and S is the sound the shape you're animating would make if it fell down the stairs.

I should start using some MSN again... By the way, I'm not really into that IRC thing. Any tips for starters?

Muzer
27 Jun 2009, 15:44
First of all, you should choose an IRC client. Here are some tips for doing so:

* Don't use mIRC. It's overrated and the nag screen will get on your nerves.
* Don't use a webchat client. They suck.
* If you can help it, don't use an IM client, as they usually give lackluster IRC performance.

I personally use xchat, and would advise others to do the same. However, the learning curve is a bit steep, but you know how to use google, don't you? And you can ask in #xchat on the FreeNode network (which is included with xchat by default).

Also, there are two builds of it for Windows, made by different people. One you have to pay for. Don't go with that one; you have to pay for it. Find the other one.

I think that results in a complex S. Hence yours does act a bit special.

BetongÅsna
27 Jun 2009, 17:58
What did you use in your case? The smell of the idea of a pair of intanglible object falling down stairs they could theoretically touch and assuming gravity acts upon them, or just the smell of a sheet of paper with AK written on?

Cos, you know - that wouldn't fall at all, assuming there's no wind.

philby4000
27 Jun 2009, 18:16
Personally I carve all my avater shapes out of regulation 3" avatar-crafter's balsa wood, although there are computer programs you can use to simulate your avatar noise to an acceptable degree.

FlingingStuffDownStairs.net is a popular open source stair simulator, although it's set up for larger objects like pianos, so you'll need to mess around with the settings unless you want your animation to be all slapstick.

AndrewTaylor

If you've done that, you might as well get a slat blind and a webcam and just physically spin the thing around.

I used a complex device that behaves differently depending on an intricate sensor that is capable of detecting what kind of person the end user is, finally dividing them in two categories. The sound this device made while falling was extremely bizarre but fortunately it translated perfectly into the avatar. :D

I mean, they pretty much built 3 computers into one. For those of you who can't be bothered to look at Wikipedia, there are two video chipsets, two processors of different architechtures, one of which can run in two modes, three different ROM "areas", the list goes on. There is C128 mode (uses the 8502 in either mode, either graphics chipset and the C128 set of ROM chips), CP/M mode (uses the Z80 and the VIC-II for running CP/M included in another set of ROM chips), and C64 mode (uses the 8502 and the VIC-II for running C64 software using the original C64 ROM chips). Madness!

Vader and robowurmz should fight in game 1v1 in something, not in forum.

This isn't a fight...

Speaking of which, is it just me or is it normal that sometimes I feel like getting into a fight with someone. A physical fight, I mean. I'm not a very fighty type of person, really. I can be violent at times (throwing my SN Pro Pad at the wall because Blanka beat me on hard, for example) but I would rather settle things with words, usually.

Does anyone live round here who fancies a mini Fight Club? ;) :p

robowurmz
29 Jun 2009, 17:20
Really? Hmm, Cybershadow's playing dirty DHTML tricks on me then. Any time I try to get to the page, I end up stuck with the same old tripe.

I've tried changing my IP, next I'll try getting onto it with a different PC. If that still fails to work, I'll spoof my IP and try proxying to it.

Vader

I'm more concerned now with breaking the barrier :P

It appears to be centred around my IP: however, I've changed it multiple times. Using a different PC does not work, since they're all under the same router.

So as far as I can tell, Cybershadow is pulling my IP from the forum and using it. So techinically if I signed out, changed my IP, and then went to the site I should be able to get into it.

AndrewTaylor and FutureWorms avatars are hard to read, because the text is only readable for breif moments each spin. Maybe you guys could make your avatars thinner, making them easier to read/make out?

FutureWorm, that links to a music website that has a picture of a guy that looks like a gay baddie off James Bond. Those spinny avatars are becoming annoying, anyway....

On the right side of the page you can see the company logo animated, that's where Futureworm took his avatar from originally.

I remember with windows XP you could right click a gif you liked or other things and set them as an active desktop item, but with vista that changed. I still wanted to stick my spinning avatar on my desktop, so I made Sidebar gadget to display it. I'll upload it here incase someone else wants to do the same, however, you will need to do a little bit of editing. After you unzip the file and "install" the gadget (which is just another zip file changed to a gadget file) you will need to go to "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Wind ows Sidebar\Gadgets" and then open the folder where the gadget is saved. Then copy and paste your avater.gif into the folder. Next edit the .html file and replace the text: "AceAvatar_bmp.gif" with "YourAvatar.gif"

Finaly reload the gadget in the sidebar and then you can place your avatar wherever you want on your desktop.
