I recently reinstalled WWP and had enjoyed playing for a week or so.

I got busy at work, and hadn't played for slightly more than a week. Still, nothing here on the home PC has changed in that time.

I now can no longer connect to the UK (only) Wormnet Server, and also receive the message "A Fatal Error has occured while trying to connect", and I can't get any further.

I'm very disappointed I can no longer play.

Please confirm that the Wormnet Server for WWP is still up and available.

Dear Wormers,

A friend and myself broke out my old copy of Worms World Party when I visited him last week, and we had a blast playing the game. Especially when another friend joined for some good old-fashioned three-player worm action.

I had brought my disc with me, and it was no problem for the three of us to play on his computer setup -- a 37" Samsung flatscreen in his living room with bluetooth keyboard and mouse (*jealous*), and simply slide the keyboard/mouse back and forth between us on his coffee table. We had a ton of fun and it brought back some great Worms memories for me.

Anyhoo, when I came back home, I installed the game on my pc (haven't had it installed for a few years) and was looking forward to some online play. I even contacted some friends that I know still have copies of the game lurking in drawers somewhere, so we could "reunite" our old worm action.

But, when I try to join WormNet, I get the same error message. In my case, I click on the WormNet link in WWP and the game gives me a "please wait ... working" message (or something similar to indicate it's connecting). That message displays for maybe 20 seconds or so, and then a box pops up and tells me:

--------------------------------------------------------------

! W.W.P.
Fatal error during gameserver connection, disconnecting

--------------------------------------------------------------

So, I tried the unthinkable, and I actually read the forums before posting this. There seems to be only a few references to the problem, and none of them apparently work for me. One was for a guy who got the message instantly after clicking on WormNet, but since mine takes 20 seconds or so before giving me the "fatal error" warning, I figure I have a different situation/problem.

I've tried turning off Windows Firewall, and that didn't seem to make a difference either.
I have the U.S. disc, judging from the art on it (worm doing a dragonball attack), and I have installed the patch from the WWP website. Someone, on another post, suggested trying the other patches, and that did nothing for me either. I also tried uninstalling the game, running ad-Aware and Spybot, performed a registry clean, then reinstalled the game and patched it, and I still get the same fatal error message.

So, dear knowledgeable Wormers, I would appreciate any advice and/or help you can offer, to get me back into the swing of worms. (Ninja rope joke?)
Besides, I figure I need the practice and need to brush up in preparation for the new worms pc game coming out later. (Super excited about that).

I, too, am gettin the Fatal Error while trying to connect to WormNet. Same exact problem you describes. Tries to connect for about 20 seconds...then Fatal Error. I hope someone finds out whats going on, i miss WWP!

Make sure you have the latest service patch (I believe the Sold Out Software version is pre-patched, or at least has the patch on the disc), available from http://wwp.team17.com

If it still doesn't work, try this:
Press start, click run, and type cmd and press enter. Type telnet wormnet2.team17.com 6677

and tell us what you get.

It says looking up user name found user name
ping
error closing link ping timeout 60 sec
connection to host lost or somethig similar.

I got to say, I do feel a little better seeing that several other people are having the same problem.

I do have the latest patch installed. And, I should probably mention I'm running Windows XP.

Muzer, I put in your command and I got the following:

----------------------------------------

...
connecting ...

NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname ...
NOTICE AUTH :*** Found your hostname
PING :wormnet2.team17.com
ERROR :Closing Link: [unknown@255.255.255.255] <Ping timeout: 60 seconds>

Connection to host lost.

-----------------------------------------

So what does that tell us? Any thoughts?

That should be fine then.

That should be fine then.

So, you're saying "that should be fine," as in it should be connecting to allow me to play online, but it's not?

I just tried again a few minutes ago, and it still doesn't connect for online play. I'm still getting the identical "Fatal error during gameserver connection, disconnecting" message.

So what's my next step to try? There's got to be some way around this problem (whatever it may be).

And thanks for all your help, Muzer, I really appreciate it.

My results to your "try to telnet" request are the same as previously posted....

NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
NOTICE AUTH :*** Found your hostname
PING :wormnet2.team17.com
ERROR :Closing Link: [unknown@255.255.255.255] (Ping timeout: 60 seconds)

Connection to host lost.

C:\Documents and Settings\Username>

I also still get the same error trying to connect to Wormnet from within the game...."Fatal Error Connecting to Server" and this error has only developed in the last week or two.

PLEASE help!!!

Look in your firewall settings, and try to add Worms World Party as an exception to access the internet. You may have to remove it and re-add it. If you can't figure it out or if it doesn't work, just try disabling the firewall completely.

I checked, and I did have WWP listed under the exceptions tab in the firewall. So I deleted it completely, then added WWP as an "exception program" for the firewall. Then I tried running WWP and connecting to WormNet for online play, and the dastardly fatal error message was still there. Same as before, it popped up after about 20 seconds or so.

"Fatal error during gameserver connection, disconnecting."

I went back into the Windows firewall settings and turned the firewall off completely, then launched WWP again, same results. Fatal error of doom!
Still can't connect.

"Fatal error during gameserver connection, disconnecting."

Boo x10!

I'm just trying to remember if this has been a problem in the past.

Make sure your time and date on your computer are correct (obviously not to the second, but to within a few minutes). Worms World Party uses authentication based on the time, so it might break if your time is wrong.

Yes, my date and time settings are spot on for my location. WWP still doesn't work for online play and I'm still getting the exact same fatal error message. *grumble* *grumble*

I was looking through the other threads and found that there was an outage on Wormnet recently (see thread: http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38869).

This time also coincides exactly with when I re-installed WWP (that following Monday). Also, if you look at the several other people who are posting in this thread that are having the same problem as me, all of the problems seem to be after this outage. That is, the "Fatal error during gameserver connection, disconnecting" message seems to have become prevalent after the outage.

(People above in this thread have said that they haven't had trouble playing WWP online before, and the fatal error problem just started in the last week or so. Also, I should note that I have had WWP installed on this PC before, and never had any problem connecting for online play.)

That got me to thinking, is it possible that so many people play W:A over WWP that the "hardcore" wormers didn't even notice that WWP was producing fatal errors for people trying to connect to online play? Is this a problem that is only affecting a few of us (those who are posting in this thread), or is it affecting many more? Is there a possibility that the WWP server is still being affected somehow (after/since the outage) and people just haven't noticed since W:A is where most people play?

Can anyone with WWP verify that, yes, they can connect for online play?

Hmm, that is rather odd.

Try this: browse to wormnet2.team17.com in a web browser. You should get a line of text saying WormNET2.

Wait, I think I know what the problem is. When the server went down, they switched ISP, and therefore IP address. The only problem is, some copies of WWP have the old IP in the server list, rather than the DNS address. The workaround is this:

Browse to your WWP folder. Go into the graphics folder, then into the ServerLobby folder.

Right click on ServerList.htm, go to open with, and click notepad.

Go to line 11, the one that says <a href="http://195.89.193.88/wwpnet/WelcomeLoginForm.php">

Replace it with <a href="http://212.240.191.124/wwpnet/WelcomeLoginForm.php">

Save and exit

Hope it works

If someone can confirm that this works, I'll make a new thread and poke the mods to sticky it.

Fix confirmed. :)

This fix is confirmed as working!

Huzzah! Thank you, Muzer, for all of your help to resolve this problem. I can once again connect to online play. And, as an added bonus, I just won the first game I've played online since I last played WWP online about 4 years ago. Nice! (It was just a simple 2 match game, nothing fancy, and both players quit after the first match. People still do that?! *sigh* Some things never change, I guess.)

Thanks again.

For others getting the same "Fatal error during gameserver connection, disconnecting" error message when trying to connect to online play, use Muzer's above fix or see his thread at:

Sorry, I'm really not sure.

Is your computer's time, date and time zone correct?
Is the disc in good condition?
Have you tried reinstalling the game.
