OK, so I have been thinking. I really hadn't planned to do much more mapping projects after Global Warming, our newest level that is slated for release next week. But after finding that we still had so many friends and fans in the Worms community, I had to make some tough decisions - ones involving more level design. And I wanted to give everyone a bit of an appetizer of things to come from Meat & Potatoes.
These are presented in the order that they will likely be released:
1. Global Warming - I really don't want to say too much about this level other than this: It is HUGE. The idea behind it is that the world finally losing to Global Warming and the ice caps have melted. This worms level places you on top of the last portions of a few skyscrapers that are slowly going under.
Project Progress: Final Graphics and Testing (99% Complete)
ETA: Some time in the next two weeks or so.
2. Unamed Boats level - (quoted from this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=37957)) A very unique map similar in style to a BnG scheme but probably with a few added projectiles. It will consist of about 12 water crafts and a very tiny island with some radio equipment on it. The idea will be to have worms placed randomly on the ships with very little cover and see who has the best aim with Bazookas and Grenades to blow each other off the boats. You may spawn alone, or even with the enemy. The only means of going from one boat to the next will be parachutes (if you are REAL good with 'em). The island will be a bit better cover, but really not much. I am looking forward to this one.
Project Progress: Planning Stages (5% Complete)
ETA: By the End of January 2009
3. Unamed Allies vs Axis level - This level concept is something that just hit me today. The idea is to design a sprawling French country-side at night along the bottom of the map (houses, trenches, gun emplacements, etc.) inspired from the primary battlefield of World War 2. The 2nd portion of the map will appear overhead (way up high), where 2 or 3 allied aircraft will house the allied worms. The land below will be where the nazis start. The scheme will include manual worm placement to ensure the correct starting points for both teams. The weaponry will be entirely World War 2 based, with limited ammo. I have not decided on which type of aircraft will be the starting points for the allies. The airplanes that flew over Normany on D-Day would be great, but I might have a problem with the static airplanes that seem to just hover over the landscape as opposed to actually flying by. Transport helicopters would be perfect, but I need to look into the historical accuracy as far as the use of helis in world war 2. So I am a bit "up in the air" on this point and will be making some decisions soon. I really like the idea of the allies parachuting in to locations that they deem strategic while the nazis attempt to fire there missiles up at the aircraft or welcome the invading marines. This level will be heavily inspired by the Band of Brothers series originally on HBO.
EDIT: Another idea that might work for this is 1970s Vietnam. The countryside of Vietnam is absolutely beautiful and green and I can then use transport helicopters which make a little more sense being stationary in the air. So now I am torn. I love 1940s Normandy, but it may be a better concept to center it around the Vietnam era. Any ideas? Preferences?
Project Progress: Early Conceptual Stages (1% Complete)
ETA: Look for this over the next 2 or 3 months
4. The Pit of Carkoon - Not really a remake of the Classic Jabba's Palace level, but what I think will be more fun, better conceived, and more strategic than that classic Jabba-inspired level. This one will feature Jabba's entire Sail Barge (complete with interior rooms) and 2 or 3 Desert Skiffs hovering over the infamous Sarlacc Pit. The desert floor will be sharply slanted, which should result in an almost sure death for any who are thrown from the hovering craft. I am totally siked about this one and may require help from my other level designers in MNP to make this happen. The only downside to this is that this level pretty much ensures that the original Jabba's palace will NOT be remade as it exists in it's classic form.
Project Progress: Early Conceptual Stages (1% Complete)
ETA: Look for this over the next 2 or 3 months - it IS coming.
5. The Ewok Village remake - A poll has been posted in behalf of Master Clogz. See this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=37969). But the promise has been made. Either a Ewok Village remake or a Trees of Lothlorien inspiration will be created by the great Clogz.
Project Progress: Early Conceptual Stages (1% Complete)
ETA: Clogz is taking a break from level design for a month or so to write some more music so this is probably last on the this for now.
Well there you have it. I know I mentioned making a forts style worms level on another thread, but I feel these others demand my attention and will get done first. But that doesn't mean I won't be revisiting that idea later. In fact, I already have a plan for a forts style map involving a deep mining shaft and competing installations built into either side of the map. But that is way too far off to even plan on as of yet.
