View Full Version : Christmas: Loot and Stuff

6 Dec 2008, 03:56
So, it is that time of year once again. It is December, which means I am officially allowed to go around incessantly annoying everyone by singing Christmas jingles (And by that I mean "Jingle Bells" over and over again as I do not know any others). The Christmas songs are starting to play on the radio, the decorations are being put up, and more importantly, the LOOT is starting to be amassed.

So, for those who celebrate it (Naturally), what have you asked for/are expecting to get/have gotten other people this year? That way, once it has been and gone, we can compare that list with the three pairs of socks and sweater from your grandmother that you DID get.

Anything else related to the Christmas season is also welcome. Things you like about it? Things you do not like? All that jazz (Though let's try and not get TOO downbeat).

And finally, to get everyone in that festive spirit:

Digging way down low
Darksiding is OK
With Carpet Bombs we mow
Our enemies away
Above the ground Grenades they fling
But we're all out of sight
Their hurtful comments do not sting
For with our BRAINS we fight!

Oh, Mad Cow bells
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cows all the way
Oh what fun it is throw
A Holy Grenade and pray
Hey!
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cows all the way
Light or Dark you pick a side
But don't be a sissy Gray

We head towards our foe
On a Ninja Rope we ride
A Dynamite in tow
But don't commit suicide
In missions gold we rank
Beaten the whole lot
And laugh we did even though it stank
When the Skunk began to trot

Oh, Mad Cow bells
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cows all the way
I hear the sound of a Donkey fall
In this spot we should not stay
HEY!
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cows all the way
Let's hope your stockings won't be full
Of Mole Bombs Christmas Day
YEAH!
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cow bells
Mad Cows all the way
Play nice or Boggy B with his
Ol' Zook will make you pay
HEY!

I hate christmas and this year I'm pretty sure I'm going to kill Santa
Last year he was pretty clver by arriving sooner than expected, so I wasn't ready and he got away and still leave me a little present. That fat *******

I never ask for anything. I like the season and all, but... Dunno, being forced to give people stuff on a particular day, instead of casual gifts over the year is a bit... odd. Like if it was only to look nice on others.

I asked for people to pick stuff from a list, that list included:

SteelSeries - WoW mouse
12-hole Tenor Ocarina
6-foot cedar Bo Staff
The Trick of Retrospective PA Print
Full Metal Alchemist Box Set(s)
The Muppet Show Box Set(s)
Fantasy! Cartooning
Bag of Holding (for the tablet laptop I'm getting shortly after christmas)
a coat similar to ed's coat from FMA (this I know I'm getting already)

I think that was my whole list. not sure which items I'll be getting as I just gave some of the list to my mom and family and then the more expensive parts to my wife.

and btw, that song was horribly off-tempo in several parts :p

Agreed. What's even worse is they're expected to give you something too, so it works out the same as buying something crappy for youself. Except people think it's a good measure of friendship.
It makes no sense, I tell ya!

Bah, humbug!which is exactly why I don't ask for gifts. if a friend WANTS to get me something then go them, or if I want to give them something, go me, but it shouldn't have to be an exchange. I gave taddar a gift last year and he didn't give me anything. I didn't care. why should I? people confuse me...

Damn straight. Sucks all the fun out if you buy a gift for the sake of it. Buy for anyone you can think of a good gift for. Anyone who thinks they're entitled to gifts would probably benefit from not getting any. They need some perspective. And a dictionary.

Edit: I can sing pretty good. Why is that bad?

The problem with "Buying gifts for the sake of it" is that most people generally just do not do that. This could be for many reasons, such as it just never coming to mind, money, and also that they just feel they shouldn't (Possibly again for money reasons, but also that it is not socially expected, or that they might start to feel obligated, which ends up the same except all year long and without the magic). Christmas is an excuse in a way to go all out and splurge on everybody. An excuse to be materialistic and give gifts and all that jazz. To act the way you normally do not/cannot (Even if you only FEEL you cannot). Perhaps people should not need excuses, but the fact of the matter is a lot of people DO, and the point of Christmas is that it is special. That it is...magical. Giving gifts to people on a spur of the moment because you want to do something nice is great, but it is not the same as the family/friends getting together and having a jolly good time.

I realize on the other side of the coin you end up with the reverse in that you are not doing it to be nice but because you feel you DO have to and will feel guilty if you do not, which of course is not what it should be about. But like I said, I think for a lot of people it is just an excuse to make each other happy. It should not be obligatory, granted, and you are not a bad person or a bad friend if you do not, but I think it is a nice tradition anyway. :)

I've always enjoyed getting christmas presents and likely always will. it's just fun. part of that fun is to see others enjoying the gifts you gave to them. it's just a fun time all around, and that's all it should be.

I think people just need to stop trying to be friends with people they don't like. I don't have to be mean to someone just cause I don't like them, but I don't have to buy them presents either :p

We don't celebrate Christmas with presents, most of us Dutch (and Flemish I think) celebrate: Saint Nicholas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas) with presents. Saint Nicholas a guy in red with a beard, he's not fat though. (Santa and "Sinterklaas" are based on the same guy if I recall correctly)

And I got my presents today, well the people were too lazy so they gave me money to buy myself a present and wrap it up... I didn't mind though. :P

Got myself a Logitech Z-5500 Speaker set. It's awesome.

A bag of Starburst, which are somehow more acidic than their British counterparts.
A box of See's Candies. Horrible chocolate things with no card to tell me what is what. So far I've eaten more than half of them and enjoyed maybe two of them. Bleuch.

Star Wars episodes II, III and V on DVD.

Any particular reason why it's the prime episodes of Star Wars?

Right, lets see what I can remember...
Wii Fit
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Wii) [ahh, nostalga!]
Wii Magazine [Which I really need to look over sometime. I've been a little out of the loop.]
Ender's Game (book)
Do Bats Have Buttocks? (book)
Do Polar Bears Get Lonely? (book)
Evil Penguins (book... ish)
JPod (book) [and I really don't know whether to think it's rubbish or it's genius. Aside from that Coupland didn't fully understand videogame development to make an accurate account of people working in one. Which is a bit of a bother, considering he was a person that though more books should be about office environments, but unfortunately chose one that's least like typical enterprises. Oh well.]
Sweets. Wouldn't be a christmas without sweets.
Toiletries. [From my parents. Long story short, I sweat lots. It's a medical condition.]
€100

Not bad. Although I feel sorta muffed that videogames still haven't become a popular enough medium for them to be considered a 'good for all' present.

In other holiday-related matters, it only occured to me today that candles have actually become obsolete as a light sources in places without electricity, thanks to advanced enough wind-up technology allowing us to by torches that last for some time on a minute windup, yet still only cost a few bucks. I consider that a great achievement.
It also occured to me today that most people like lighting candles and use christmas lights because they're easily amused by shiny objects. That's both hilarious and depressing at the same time.

@point 1: because you can't make the smell go away with a video game. If you have a Wii, it will more than likely get worse.

@point 2: Candles are pretty, and considering you live close in to town you don't know how nice they are during a 48+ hour power failure.
Though when the power went out before Christmas at work we didn't have candles so we drove our cars in front of the window and shined the High Beam lights inside instead =/

Or, people think they're pretty and like having pretty things about the place. It's massively unremarkable.

They can be made in so many different ways, with lovely colours and patterns and swirls or fancy styles. You can make them float or have long thin ones, or short fat ones.

I like watching them burn, too. They're mesmerising :p

I'm getting old enough to be at that stage where christmas isn't such a big thing any more. this year's xmas has been the most boring christmas yet but I still had a good time.

I have only a few presents I can be bothered to note:
A Wacom Tablet (Bamboo fun edition) which I asked for. I am using it now as I speak.
Flash 8, because I want to try my hand at animating but my dad still hasn't ordered it yet. It should go well next to my Wacom tablet when I do get it though.
My favourite present of all though was one I totally wasn't expecting at the time: All four books of Douglas Adam's Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's got some solid gold british humour, brilliant quotes and I'm throughly enjoying what I have read of it so far.

"Bypasses are devices that allow some people to dash from Point A to Point B very fast whilst other people dash from point B to point A very fast. People living at point C, directly in between, are given to wonder what's so great about point A that so many people from point B are so keen to get there, and what's so great about point B that people from point A are so keen to get there. They often wish that people would once and for all work out where the hell they want to be."

Really? I reached that stage years ago! Mostly because the entirety of christmas for me is:
Spend money on people who aren't you. Put up shiny decorations you don't really care about. Visit relations (can last from one to three days). Get gifts from people who aren't you; be subsequently dissapointed. Go to mass (pointing out, atheist). Spend effort preparing christmas dinner. Eat christmas dinner; which is rather less enjoyable than regular dinners. Spend time with family. Take down decorations.

AFAIK, it was started by Adams, but he died when it was only half-completed.

Authors really need to learn to postpone their deaths until their books are finished. It's an annoying habit they have!

Y'know, it's usually a very bad idea to bash something when you have no idea what'll be like. I mean, aside from having read books that the author wrote for a mostly different demographic, that were in a completely different genre.

Paul.Power

Personally I think the only person who could do it justice would be Sir Pterry and he's busy enough with his own books.

Even then it's a tough one, because it's one thing to be as good as Adams and quite another to have the same "yes, this is absurd. Isn't that interesting?" style as him.

EDIT: okay, to be fair there are probably a few others. Heck, possibly even Eoin Colfer. I can't really say, I haven't read any of his books. Maybe I should. I mean, I only started reading Harry Potter when The Prisoner of Azkhaban (book version) came out, although I caught up fast. I only read His Dark Materials (well, the first two, never really got into The Amber Spyglass) last year. And it took me a good while to get into Discworld. So I probably should give Artemis Fowl a try.
