so. given the frantic nature of Left 4 Dead and how great it is at multiplayer and coop, I say we MUST MUST have an OD match, possibly on versus mode if enough people have the game.
who's interested?
edit: pah, it was supposed to be Left 4 OD'd can I get that fixed?

I've played the demo, and it works fine. Not as well as on the PC, but it works.
And if I play it on the PC, it won't look as good as it does on my Xbox. Aaaand, I can play comfortably from my bed.

I have the game, if it cheers you up.
But trying to unite ODers into one big game never, ever works out. :p
Akuryou13
19 Nov 2008, 15:15
fair enough, but 4 of us should be easy enough to work out :p
I have it.
Three of my friends and I bought the quad-pack together, so I got 25% off too.

£20 Amazon vs £35 Steam :p
But! Amazon shipped my copy this morning, so so much for their estimate.

I blame this pound getting weaker :p
Still, saving £15 makes up for the week wait.

I blame this pound getting weaker :p
well, it's probably more about amazon.com discounts (although the weakening pound also likely has something to do with it). £20 is about $30 (and about six months ago was more like $40), but £35 is about $50

Turns out that the L4D demo single-player still works. This'll keep me going till it arrives :p

You need to take in to account VAT at 17.5%. L4D cost me $52.86 ($44.99 ex.), which cost me £31.46 via PayPal.
I tried playing my full version with a friend's demo version, and it doesn't work. I loaded my demo version, which was still installed, from the Steam folder manually and tried connecting to my friend then, but the game refused to load.

Nice to see Valve embracing digital distribution and ****ing it up completely. I expect everyone else trying it was beginning to feel like you weren't supposed to **** it up completely.

Deals like Half-Life for just 98¢ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/) lose their charm once all the taxes come in.

Is the game amazing enough for me to bother buying it?
I suspect I know what answer I'm going to get though...
Akuryou13
22 Nov 2008, 16:12
that depends on a lot of things. have you seen the previews and gameplay movies and such? it's pretty much exactly what you would want from what you can see in those.
what TF2 is to a standard shooter game, L4D is to zombie games. it's an amazing game and well worth the money, but only if you're interested in zombie games as it really doesn't offer anything too mind-bendingly spectacular. the online versus is great and well worth playing, but it's hardly revolutionary. it's just a solidly good experience. if you're already interested in it, hell yeah it's worth it. if you're not too particularly interested, you won't be converted here.

Ah, so it's something others regard as something brilliant, but I'll regard as mediocre.
Well I might get it for Christmas or my birthday or something. I might even buy it myself at some point - more probable if you lot are interested in it a lot.

you should try the demo if it's still available. that would show you EXACTLY what the game is like, just keep in mind it's much more interesting with players instead of AI (mostly because players aren't as stupid)

You can have a game with humans if you get the demo version.
Digital distribution works fine, it's just the taxes getting in the way. If that weren't there it'd be the currency conversion. If you use Steam to buy great offers like the Valve Complete Pack for $99 (ex.), you get all of their titles since Half-Life including CS:CZ and all the HL mods. They were doing an offer on the full ID pack a couple of months ago, too, which was a great saving.
Good thing about physical retail copies of Valve games is that once you add them to your profile you can download them in future and play them from your PC.
Left 4 Dead is enjoyable but is strictly a team game. You cannot go it alone, guns blazing. You will be targeted by the horde and by the special class zombies, too, who prey on stragglers or head starters. It's the kind of game that will not appeal to everyone so rather than try to convince you to get it, I'll just advise you to get the free demo, then if you don't and you later realise what you were missing it'll be your fault.

Just played with a friend and a couple of his mates. We started playing about 10:30, only just finished. Fantastic fun; I'm very glad I bought it! Matty's right, though, it is a team game - you need to work together on voice comms to stand a chance.
I'm definitely up for a few matches as soon as anyone else is.

Game? Tonight? Tomorrow?
Interestingly Steam have converted their shop to pounds if you're in the UK, and lowered the prices. L4D from steam is now only 50p more than amazon. Although Amazon is £7 more than when I pre-ordered.

Edit: just found a thread about this on the steam forums for the full game, might give it a try.

But then you have to play with a controller anyway, you can't have two mouse/keyboards. :P
MrBunsy
23 Dec 2008, 18:09
True, but I've got an old xbox controller and an xbox to usb adapter I made years ago. Unfortunately both the mouse and controller want to control the same guy, and I can't find a way of making the controller control the second player.
I'll have to keep fiddling, though, this'd be awesome to get working.

Versus mode session #17:
Angelus thinks: "I think I'll ingeniously hide my Smoker on this roof to attack my brother."
Brother laughs: "Haha! I'm not going near that roof because I can see you on the other half of the screen."

Rats, windows went phooey last night, re-installed it this morning and it'll be hours before I can re-download everything on steam.
However, before it died I did get splitscreen working! Except for one minor problem that the controller couldn't make the other player look up or down, but I'll try and fix that when L4D's back.
