2d wins, the 3d ones are just too simplistic.

2D wins like solid awesome sauce. Nothing beats the good old Sonic games for the Megadrive (or Genesis if you're in the US)

Best cartridge combination ever. Fourteen emeralds, when getting them you hit Hyper Sonic / Knuckles and for the first time Super Tails.

Best ever times I've had with that. What I also loved is when you completed the game, you could go and choose any level and play it on the savegame, and get all teh other emeralds. Then you could spazz about with Hyper Sonic/Knuckles or Super Tails.
