I was just thinking about the same thing today, only thought it better to make it four words as five is a bit extreme. And also not to make it at all, because I know better.

Edit: Bah, you mean exactly five words, don't you?
Fine, my top 10 that I've played:
Super Swing Golf: Season 2 (couldn't go without an Albatross18 game now, could I?)
Links: The Challenge of Golf (Paul's gonna be so happy with your choice of number there)
The Secret of Monkey Island
LeChuck's Revenge: Monkey Island 2

I'll think of more later. TO REALVG REVIEW SECTION!
Edit: DAMN YOU REALVG REVIEW SECTION, YOU HAVE FAILED ME!

Edit again: For those interested, "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" is only five words.

Yeah, but this is the Top 100 Games of Five Words - I don't think those CD-i abominations will be accepted to be honest.

And Squirminator - was this all a big thing to make explicit that Escape from Monkey Island wasn't as good as the rest of the series, and 3D, and thus not counted as part of the best adventure game series ever?

Very sadly.
I really can't bear myself to like the new ones on their individual accounts; if you're going to plaster the name of a beloved adventure game onto your game, you better make sure it's up to bloody par. Otherwise you might as well set it further in the future in Western Australia with the dog called Alan and the rabbit called Barbadosian. And call the game "Confidential Journals of Matchstick Cats and Dogs", or something.

I thought the new Sam and Max games weren't bad actually. The lack of totally obscure puzzles meant the game was actually solvable without a walkthrough, which probably can't be said for the original game for most players, as amazing as the original game is.

I felt they helped bring adventure gaming to today's FPS crazed "shoot first think later" gamer population. It wasn't the same as the old adventure games. but in a way I'm kind of glad about that.

I mean, seriously, you get the details for your new case from inside a cat?! Was I missing something obvious in the original game or did I get hopelessly stuck after the first five minutes because I'm an idiot?

That's cause it was so awesome it broke the fourth wall and gave you a preciously crazy logic to work with. It's unlike any adventure game I've ever played - it's more demented than Psychonauts, even.
The new series, like you say, takes it to today's generation. People who can't think, who can't understand wry, arid humour, and who can't settle in to the original's new policy of thinking.
The new voices just don't match Hit the Road's classic cynical voice for Sam and an American spastic for Max (rather poor clarity, but hey - a little subtitle never hurt anyone). Now it's like they're a bunch of ambivalent hypocrites: like Laurel and Hardy impersonators performing magic tricks.

Of Sam and Max 1, I can read the entire script without losing a smile on my face.

Sam: Well, that was a pleasantly understated credit sequence.
Max: I enjoyed the cheesy retro ambience.
Sam: ...what the hell are you talking about, Max?
A short pause.
Max: Sam, either termites are burrowing through my skull, or one of us is ticking.
Sam: Oops - oh yeah.
Sam produces a time bomb disguised as an evil scientist's head.
Sam: Max, where should I put this so it won't hurt anyone we know or care about?
Max: Out the window, Sam. There's nothing but strangers out there.
Sam chucks the time bomb out the window. It explodes.
Sam: I hope nobody was on that bus.

The same honestly can't be said for the new games.

I'd like to see a 1:1 remake of Hit The Road with the engine of the new games.

The awesome Jazz soundtrack just doesn't sound as good as MIDI tracks.
Also, Max just looks so much more manic as a 3D rendered model than he does as a pixely sprite.

Sam & Max... those 4 floppy disks. I remember calling customer report back when customer report gave free walkthrough information because I kept getting stuck as a 9 year old. When I got both Sam and Max into that fish and then the helicopter came and picked them up I felt so good, I thought I was close to finishing the game after going back and forth the two or three scenarios I had on the map so far.

That game is one of my favorites ever.

Why? Just use ScummVM.
Will ScummVM turn the original MIDI soundtrack into proper, instrumental Jazz music?
Will ScummWM turn the original pixel sprites into awesome-looking polygon model, that actually resemble the original comics much more closer?
I think I pointed out those two wishes in my previous post.

BTW, I was going to play through Hit The Road again with ScummVM before prior to Episode 1 of the new game, but quit very soon because the game is just to damn old technic-wise.

If want to play Tetris I will look for a good clone that feels and plays like the original, and won't use an Elektronika 60 emulator to play the original. :p

You can't compare it though. Sprited aventure games, specially those by Lucas Arts have a great feeling to them that newer games just don't have.
Like if I want to play Sonic I'll stay the **** away from nicer looking 3D games with a better soundtrack and HUD.
I think the old Sam & Max game is playable by today's standards.

10 Oct 2008, 13:39
True, most late sequels and remakes of old classics mostly completely lose the charm of the old games because the change the basic game play and feel too much.
Just look at the time when a lot of companies thought they needed to switch their great 2D game concepts to crappy 3D ones, e.g. Earthworm Jim 3D, Lemmings 3D,...

In the case of the new Sam & Max games though, the basic game play (point and click adventure, dialog answer selection) has been retained.
And the cell shaded 3D models are definitely better and more to the original comics than in the old game.

Granted, Hit The Road had indeed the wackier story and more absurd puzzles, but I think the characters are still defined greatly and carry over the Sam & Max spirit.

What I find the worst thing in the new games, is, that they are episode based, with the riddles and pick-ups confined to that one episode.
In the original game you collected obscure items that you didn't need until late into the game.
This made the new game feel rather shallow to me at times.

I have only finished season one though and still need to play through season two, so it might get somewhat better.

Unless you're sitting next to me when I'm making my posts I doubt you have enough information to know the way I feel when posting other than prejudice. Not to mention your hipocrisy on calling me agressive and the labeling franpa's post as slightly stupid which is much more offensive than anything I said. Now please, this is the 5th time you comment on my posts, I don't give a ****, and less important it is to the rest of the people, so everytime you feel like seeking for attention, precisely, mine, please drop a line on my PM inbox were I have an easier time ignoring your crap.

Bonz: I agree about S&M:HTR, the gameplay design is not exactly good, it's not very fun getting stuck nor having puzzles that make no sense (regardless of how bizarre they are) it all comes down to trial and error and that's tedious. I think the game is much better when enjoyed as an interactive story. One of those games were if you use a walktrhough all through the game you won't be missing anything and will enjoy it much.
