View Full Version : Windows Vista - Worms World Party Colour Fix 1.0

Hi guys..
I've made a little fix to make WWP work on Vista without the annoying inverted and changing colours.
This fix makes it possible to keep the default Worms colours at all times, so they never change to a different colour.

You can get the fix by downloading the attachment below.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Download the attachment
2) Rename it from 'WWP Colour Fix for Vista.zip.txt' to 'WWP Colour Fix for Vista.zip'
(This is because this forum doesn't allow attachment uploads of zip files to be more than 100KB, but does allow text files)
3) Extract all files in the ZIP file using a compression utility such as WinZIP or WinRAR.
4) Important: Read the Instructions.txt file after extracting to see how to install/uninstall and other stuff.

Please make sure that you read the instructions in the attachment carefully.

EDIT::::
Version 1.1 released!
Guys if you have been facing problems such as Windows Explorer not re-opening automatically after you quit the game, some 'H:' drive problem, or some 'anthem' problem during installation/uninstallation, please download
WWP Color Fix for Vista v1.1.zip.txt then rename it to WWP Color Fix for Vista v1.1.zip

VERY IMPORTANT! - For those of you who have had no problems with this fix and think it works fine, please DO NOT UPDATE to v1.1 because I have not made an overwrite function for this. v1.1 has no difference to v1.0 other than fixing the problems mentioned by the posters who are facing problems

Thanks for you help in improving my programming ability guys.

Until Then,
Enjoy!

Nice, will see if it works.

Oh wait:
In Windows Vista, a new object called Desktop Windows Manager consumes most colour-efficient resources providing people the 'Aero' effect.
In most games, the 'Aero' effect in Windows Explorer won't allow necessary resources to run the game.
The fix temporarily disables the 'Aero' Effect and Windows Explorer to make sure no resources are prohibited to Worms World Party.
When Worms World Party is quit, the fix re-enables Windows Explorer and the 'Aero' effect.

Might not on mine, since i use win98 style menus already.

How about providing the source code, so we know it's not a cleverly disguised trojan?

Edit: never mind, it's just a batch file wrapped in an .exe (why?) that kills Windows Explorer, starts wp.exe (it renames wwp.exe to wp.exe when it "installs"), and starts Explorer again (assuming Windows is installed in C:\Windows - use %WINDIR% next time).

How is your "fix" different than disabling compositing (Aero effects) in WWP's compatibility settings?

tremonti92
16 Jun 2008, 13:18
Well, in the Games Explorer, you have to make sure that you run WWP.exe.. hence, this patch makes sure your WWP runs while disabling explorer at the same time, hence it renames your WWP.exe. It it were a batch file, Games Explorer wouldn't have recognized this as Worms World Party so it wouldn't show that WWP is installed on the computer.

Although it's a batch file (I've already mentioned it in my Instructions.txt file), it does not invert the colours again, so yeah, it IS a fix.

It is different from disabling the the Aero effects because that does NOT work for me, however, this fix does. Hence, for those of you who have made it work that way, it's alright not to use this fix.

And thanks for the %WINDIR% advice (lol). I always thought that explorer would be in C:\Window\. I'm still a beginner at this, so I need to take advice from others, so thanks!

And thanks for analyzing the file. Now everyone knows it's safe to download and not a trojan or some other malware.

Some installations that have been upgraded from certain versions (including Win2k I think) have C:\WINNT (for WINdows NT), and you can also specify a different path on installation.

This doesn't matter, I had the same problem but the fix still worked like magic!

Me and my brother love playing this against each other, works perfectly on Vista over TCP/IP network. Just applied this and it works perfectly fine, never thought I'd be able to play WWP properly on Vista.

Who cares if it's just a batch script, simple fixes are the best aren't they? It's been so many years and this is one of the first fixes to come about so if all it does is rename a file and kill explorer.exe, well great - it's something I never thought about and it works easily.

Many thanks again :)

Exactly. Also, you seem to have the CD drive hardcoded to H:/, either include the song in the package, or get it to reliably detect which drive the CD is in (not sure how). Yeah, and change "C:\WINDOWS" to %WINDIR%

that was in regards to SoundEd.
SoundEd includes the sound effects from the generation 2.1 and generation 2.2 (note: I just made up these version numbers, 2.1 being for Worms 2, 2.2 being for W:A and WWP, I wonder if they will catch on...) games, and the only thing the program can do is swap them (you can't make your own and use those, it is a common misconception, the program is only for if you hate one set of SFX and want to replace it...)

SoundEddy* is sort of a dark gray area when it comes to breaking copyright laws. Yes, the program does contain copyrighted information; but it is stored in 1 custom .dat file. The program only grants access to the copyrighted material if you own either W2, W:A, or WWP.

Many programs and websites use copyrighted material from Worms. Team17 doesn't seem to mind as long as you don't do anything too bad.

Guys.
I've checked the file again.
Nothing seems to be the problem.
I've checked this fix on 5 comps, and it seems to be working fine on all of them.

There's no 'H:' directory in this program. It's just that the fixes have to be placed in your 'Worms' directory (where you wwp.exe and wwp.ico is) (READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! THEY'RE IMPORTANT!)

To rename the file from *.txt to *.zip,
check this out:
http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=668796&postcount=41
(thanks franpa)

It's alright if it doesn't play the french anthem song.

OK. I will post a newer version of the fix which will eliminate all these problems... thanks for your help...

Guys,
I have updated the Fix to v1.1.
The people who have been facing NO problems and think the fix works fine, DO NOT UPDATE to v1.1 PLEASE.

@Muzer

How exactly?
A) By making it compatible with W:A
B) By removing that "file not found" error (if it still exists)

I don't see what the point in not releasing the source is anyway. It's not like people are going to steal it.

dijk94
28 Oct 2008, 19:22
Still, releasing the source would be good, if you're afraid people will steal it, release it under a license like:

"I allow people to edit my code, as long as they allow me to "own" it"

I could probably do it myself, too, but I'm too lazy:)

Source on killing Explorer.exe: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/10/10/tips-of-how-to-take-effect-after-installation-without-restarting-windows-xpvista/

EDIT: It works, I tested it on W:A and it behaves as expected, explorer.exe is killed before W:A launches and is restarted when you exit W:A. There is one side effect (that affects W:A, not sure about wwp), Minimizing during gameplay results in the inability to get back into the game without launching explorer.exe, The game does not crash, it just doesn't get listed in alt-tab anymore...

Probably, I don't know. I was only testing the functionality of the Command Line commands and arguments, making sure it behaved in an expected way. I don't suffer any "colour corruption" unless I minimize in WormNET.

Here you have the sourcecode.

For the interested; Ollydbg, breakpoint on DeleteFileA, check %TEMP% and there you find the batch-script before its being deleted.

------------------------------
Content from the batch "fix.exe" use:

@shift
@echo off
cls
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
call wp.exe
start "" "%windir%\Explorer.exe"
exit

------------------------------
Content from the batch "Install fix - WWP.exe" use:

@shift
@echo off
cls
if EXIST FIX.exe GOTO TEMP
exit
:TEMP
ren wwp.exe wp.exe
ren FIX.exe wwp.exe
attrib wp.exe +s +h
if EXIST wp.exe Echo The Worms World Party Color Fix has been installed successfully!>>temp.txt
call temp.txt
del temp.txt

------------------------------
Content from the batch "Uninstall fix - WWP.exe" use:

@shift
@echo off
cls
if EXIST wp.exe GOTO TEMP
exit
:TEMP
attrib wp.exe -s -h
ren wwp.exe FIX.exe
ren wp.exe wwp.exe
if EXIST fix.exe Echo The Worms World Party Color Fix has been uninstalled successfully>> temp1.txt
call temp1.txt
del temp1.txt

------------------------------

Personally I would have made it runable from everywhere. Make the user choose where wp.exe is and save the location of it so the program know til next time where it is. That would have made this fix work for WA too and any other game with the same needs (kill explorer and relaunch it after the game exit).

Anyhow, have fun fixing the script, if thats needed.

Redownload the fix and try. Else, create a text document, and copy-paste this:

@shift
@echo off
cls
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
call wp.exe

exit

Save the document in your game-folder where wp.exe is. Make sure you choose "Save as..." and change file format to "all files", and then name it fixmyworms.bat, save, and run fixmyworms.bat ;) These last steps is important, else it wont be saved as a .bat-file.

Good luck

you probably did not execute my tweak within your WWP folder, or you renamed wwp.exe to something else :/ it is pecuiliar though, that Explorer does not restart... it auto restarts if corrupted and every fix on here (which suppress the auto restart) will manually relaunch Explorer.exe after WWP is finished... try running the fixes as an Administrator?

No, 94.xx are not available for my gfx card, and thank you but it's not a "solution" for me to install the oldest driver availbale just to make Worms buggy games work... :-/

I'd really like someone at Team17 would notice this bug (also WA and Worms2, I've heard have this colors bug) and fix it once and for all....

It is true. Worms relies on an old, little used, but completely standard Direct X technology called DirectDraw. Many modern graphics card drivers have left out support for this. However, I am pretty sure that NVIDIA is OK now, since I haven't recently heard of any people having problems with NVIDIA drivers. The main culprit nowadays is Intel Express graphics chipsets (usually in laptops) with Windows Vista.

However, I do not think that this is a driver problem.

Try one or more of the following:

1) Right click on the shortcut, go to properties, click the compatibility tab, and fiddle with the options there, in particular the "Disable visual themes" option or something (can't remember, I don't use Vista).
2) Try always keeping a folder open when you start WWP
3) Disable Windows Aero (not the best thing if you like pretty stuff)

So you say it's a limit of DirectDraw's palette handling? I'm not sure if it's WWP which is "hacky" coded or a real DDraw problem...

With GeForce Go 6100 and Forceware 98.15 I have problems, and only with WWP...

I already tried those tricks and compatibility settings (first thing I tried obviously). Only thing that works (not perfectly, but works) is the script to kill explorer.exe first, but I still have transparent-black underwater and upper sky :(

Hi guys..
I've made a little fix to make WWP work on Vista without the annoying inverted and changing colours.
This fix makes it possible to keep the default Worms colours at all times, so they never change to a different colour.

You can get the fix by downloading the attachment below.

Please make sure that you read the instructions in the attachment carefully.

EDIT::::

Until Then,
Enjoy!

i had the same problem about it saying like instalation not complete cuz it couldnt find the french anthem thing, but then i clicked on the recommended instalation button that popped up in vista after, im not sure if it worked anyway or if that made the difference ,but it seems to work now.

ps. i never had this problem when i first got my new pc with vista, it started happening every now and then after 6 months of playin and then became permanent

pps. if this aero thing is the problem, cant u disable it or change it. i think vlc media player disables it to run

Running Vista Ultimate x64 and this does not work.

My Windows location is C:\Windows, I've tried using both of those ".exe" files.

On top of the colors being messed up, the sound is messed up as well. Voices and weapon sounds are extremely bassy and muffled sounding. But menu sounds work.

. . .

Worms Armageddon actually has the exact same problem as well.

Try the other fix, which (oddly) involves starting an explorer.exe window (eg open my documents) before starting the game.

Also, try fiddling with compatibility settings.

Finally, try ending all non-critical processes (firewalls, antivirus programs, instant messengers...), and if it stops, start one at a time until you find which one causes it. Then, look in the settings of that program for an "always on top" or "show above over windows" option, possibly relating to message boxes.

Thank you, your fix worked in perfection. ^_^

But I didn't hear the 'anthem' WAV sound after the installation. =/ Maybe I should to download the 1.1 version of your fix? I think so.

By the way, can you do the same practical fix for Worms Armageddon? Is a really shame that currently, we can play WA without the colour problem, only terminating the explorer.exe process in the Task Managger or using foreign programs like WormKit and things like that... : (

Although... I heard something about a possible new BETA for the WA with that fix included. Will be that really so?

Don't be silly, WormKit was created by one of the two people who keep releasing WA updates for your worming pleasure. This WWP fix you've just applied, on the other hand, truly is third-party.

You didn't understand my point... U_U

Although, receive that 'warm' reply from you, is my fault, for speak about the WormKit with not many knowledges about it (I not even knew that WormKit is a product from the official developers).

But, I was not talking about official or unofficial fixes. I was talking about programs that you must use every time you want to play WA, and this fix, once installed, you can forget of it. And in the other hand, in the few things that I have heard about the WormKit, there are various technical problems and complaints of my partners who play WA with that program.

But I repeat, I admit it, I was prejudiced.

KRD
6 Sep 2009, 16:40
You still are prejudiced. :p

WormKit is simply a framework that allows different modules to be loaded, with which the game experience can be modified to different extents. By itself, it does nothing, has zero technical issues and it doesn't prevent you from running the game normally via WA.exe if you should so wish. What your friends are complaining about are problems with various modules, made by members of this community, that they are loading into WA.exe, not the framework itself. Because you obviously don't need any of those fancy modules, just the one that will make the game function correctly on your system until the next update, you really have nothing to worry about. It's dead simple:

You should create a shortcut to WormKit next to where you have your WA shortcut, download the module you need, move it to the appropriate folder and run the game via the WormKit shortcut until the next update. When that has been released, you can simply delete all the WormKit files and subfolders [all inside the main WA folder] and everything will be the same as it was before. You will happily be able to play WA using the old shortcut.

While I don't know exactly how this WWP fix works, WormKit is definitely a cleaner and safer solution, not to mention it allows you to play the better of the two games.

XD Ok, ok. Now is clearer to me, and thanks for your explanation.

That WormKit thing seems very interesting. You persuaded me, because now I have the intention of test the WormKit in WA.

But, anyway, according to all that you said me, WormKit works only for WA. WWP is still ignored and I suppose this fix (you sowed in me a doubt, of this fix’s security, with your insinuation… >_< !! ) will be needed for play the missions, multiplayer missions, forts mode and all the few interesting things of WWP. =/

In fact, currently I’m using it, and not counting with a new strange little problem in my system, I have no problems with this fix.

KRD
7 Sep 2009, 00:52
Yeah, with all the people who have installed this fix, the chance of it being malicious without anyone noticing is low. I didn't really want to sow doubt in you, I'm just trying to point out that WormKit is, if anything, even safer. You're right, though, it will be a while before you are able to play the WWP missions and use all the WormPot modes in WA. None of this is too important to people playing the game online, so I guess that's why it's not that high on the priority list.

And the possibility of play in WormNET and in the LAN mode, with players and the computer as an additional team, wouldn't be bad for me...

Thanks for the work on this. For those of you who want to write your own script, here is what is working for me:

1. Create a wa_vista_7.bat file in your WA programs directory (use notepad)
2. Put this content (modify to your needs):

@echo off
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
"C:\program files (x86)\Worms Armageddon\wa.exe" /nointro
ping localhost
Start explorer.exe

3. Create a shortcut to the .bat file, modify the shortcut so it has the same icon as the default WA shortcut, replace the default WA shortcut with this one.
4. Modify the new shorcut so it always runs minimized

Tada :)

PS - ping localhost works as a wait, instead of using pause and needing user interaction

Well, first day after WWP installation on Vista it worked perfectly, then some time later it messed with colors so i found your fix. Now the 'cake' loading screen is normal colors, but the most important gameplay is still looking awfully :(

Someone told to try 16-bit colors setting, well after that i got black screen during game :P

For those of you who would rather do it manually, here are the steps:

1. Create a "loader.bat" file in your WA program files folder using notepad,
2. Copy the following text into your .bat file using notepad: (change what variables you need to, ie. Program Files location)

@echo off
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
"C:\program files (x86)\Worms Armageddon\wa.exe" /nointro
ping localhost
Start explorer.exe

3. Modify your WA shortcut in the start menu / desktop to point at this .bat file instead of the WA executable. Now when you launch WA, it will temporarily kill off Explorer which will resolve the colour issue. :)

Installed the patch, works fine, but somehow when the time on the computer changes to a xx:00 hour, the colour problem is back.

F.ex: Playing without a problem, at 21:00, colours messed up. Restart game, everything fine again, but at 22:00, again colours messed up..

I'm having this problem on both my PC and portable, both fresh clean installs of windows 7. (PC: 64bit, portable: 32bit)

Any idea what's causing this? Or should I better try the "Windows 7 Compatibility Fix v1.4" instead of this one?

Create a text document, and copy-paste this:

@shift
@echo off
cls
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
call wp.exe
start "" "%windir%\Explorer.exe"
exit

Save the document in your game-folder where wp.exe is. Make sure you choose "Save as..." and change file format to "all files", and then name it fix.bat, save, and run fix.bat ;) These last steps is important, else it wont be saved as a .bat-file.

Good luck

This works for me on win7; your .exe of the game might be wwp.exe, then you need to modify the script on "call wp.exe" in "call wwp.exe" or the name of the exe
Thanks!!!
