Right in order to keep the Fan Artist of the month thread from deteriorating into a fully fledged Pokémon debate (granted it already has) I have created this thread.

Here are my personal favourite quotes from the debate so far (notice how I have included quotes from myself here, oh arrogance i love thee)

All the new pokemon suck. They should have stuck with 151. And no confusing names.

They sucked.

Red Blue and Yellow and Green. Best ever and still are the best.

And the newer ones don't suck! i hate people saying this.

You're good at being wrong.

The new ones do suck.

Newer Pokemon don't suck. You just want to pretend things were different "back in my day" combined with an excuse as to why you don't know who newer pokemon are. S'true.

I stopped playing at that red remake for the GBA. I loved it, to some extent. (I REMADE my team from the old game... felt good :))

Anyways, the new ones, do indeed suck. They don't have the same feeling anymore. And even though I say the more the merrier, they are just pulling the frachise to its limits.

Even the Gold/Silver ones where not off yet... But take a look on the older legendaries, and on the new ones... Articuno and That Palkia or whatever. They don't represent anything now. Just a fancy design.

newer pokemon do suck, and i agree with that comic-strip. The designers have went way over the top and made the majority of them look like robotic animals with metallic coatings. The originals were great but now these just blow.

Pokemon hasn't been genuinely good since Gold & Silver.

Well Pokemon lost me as soon as bloody Togepi (spelling) was introduced. He was an annoying little mo fo. They have pushed the franchise too far, thinking that adding new Pokemon will make up for the fact that every new release is essentially the same game with better graphics. Red, blue, green and yellow were all the same games only with different Pokemon (aside from the Pikachu that followed you around in Yellow) but I didn't mind then because the franchise then was something new and generally original.

The new pokemon do, indeed, suck. they've lost thier creativity. all of the originals looked like they were elemental incarnations of whatever alignment they were. they were very original characters with a life of their own. I've just gone and looked at the differences between the originals and the new ones, and the originals all make sense, I can guess what they are based on their appearance. the gold & silver ones are more borderline but probably about half of them are still fairly good. by whatever the next series was they were completely out of ideas and all of the pokemon were just random characters with nothing linking them together at all. not only can I not tell what elemental alignment they are, I can't even tell what they're supposed to be. it's sort of like the square characters of today. the new ones are fine if taken at face value but when comparing them to the originals that were actually GOOD, they don't compare.

I grew up with Ruby and Sapphire, and the games don't suck, its also got better graphics and is more exciting and mysterious, and it also has dive which is fun to use.

Also, the Regi's are reasonable. The only pokemon i hate are: Shaymin, Combee, Delbird, Unown, Drowsee and Hypno, Wobbuffet, Caterpie, Beedril, one pokemon with a paintbrush tail, and Butterfree and Kakuna and Castform.

Koffing > All

Do you judge pokemon on their looks you all? i judge em on their power.

Oh. I just made up a new pokemon. It has INFINITE POWER OF ALL TYPES AND IS INMORTAL AND CAN READ MINDS AND TRAVEL TROUGH TIME AND IT IS MORE POWERFULL THAN GOD. And it looks like a giant turd with genitalia. Is it the most awesome pokemon ever?
I think I have proofededented my point.

Should've ended at Gold/Silver/Crystal in my opinion, even though I do play the new games just because I still have a spot in my heart for Pokemon.
Mewtwo, is my favorite of all time, and no matter what new Pkmns come along, Mewtwo is the most powerful. If you remember the quote from the beginning of the First Movie: This is a tale of the most powerful Pokemon of all.
On a side note, hate 4kids now even more for cutting this out of the First Movie.Baby Mewtwo! No joke. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fTp0AXtCtI)

Mewtwo doesn't look a robot. It's a genetically modified thing. I remember it was said on the original games, and what do you know? there's nothing metalic on him. Or spikey.

Those where the days, when they made original stuff, and not robot-like stuff for legendaries because they are meant to be just cool, without any depth.

Oft99
4 Jun 2008, 18:48
Some of the new pokemon are brilliant concepts, but that's less than 50% of the ones they make, the rest suck so hard, including pretty much all of the new legendaries.

Of the 493 pokemon there are, only about 200 are in any way original and worth adding.
That 200 consists mostly of the original 151 (with the exception maybe of Execute and Executor which IMO were the only pointless ones in the first 151) and any new Pokemon connected in evolution to the first 151/149 like Steelix, Pichu, Scizor, Electivire, Magmortar, etc (with the expection of Politoed) and maybe a few others that were quite original.

EDIT: This conversation about new pokemon reminds me of earlier conversations I once had on elsewhere about the new Sonic characters.

Also on a different note was anyone else majorly P*ssed that they replaced Mewtwo with Lucario in Brawl?

I'm kinda confused that they got rid of Mewtwo. Brawl had a thing about including the villain from most of the series (such as Wolf), so you'd think they'd keep Mewtwo, as he's probably the closest thing Pokémon ever got to a villain.

And Lucario... I actually think he'd have a pretty nice design if it wasn't for those god-awful spikes that jutted out in awkward places.

Hmm. In other Pokemon-related news, Pokemon Platinum is set to be released this Autumn. In Japan, of course.

Well, half of it was because he was generally out of date as his movie appearance was nearly 10 years ago (10 movies were made since then, including the one released next month.) and Lucario was a much more recent hero, and because he was a clone character in Melee.

As for a villain, I do believe Darkrai is the newest Pokemon villain now. Although I expect Girantina to become the newer one once the next movie is out.

Edit: Oh, and Mewtwo stopped being a villain. [Link] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon:_Mewtwo_Returns)

Well, there is the added fact that it's all too common to play through a Pokemon game more than once, and playing through the same map and events but with different wild pokemon, along with the chance to 'Catch Them All', is much better than playing through the exact same game again.

"anyone who doesn't like the new games are selfish, never happy whiners. They've dramatically done sooo much to improve the games that they need a good pat on the back" I think thats a good point.

Sorry what? Selfish? How the f*** is not liking a game selfish? I think your "friend" needs a lesson in what selfishness means. Whiners I'll give you because yes I am whining about the new Pokemon games. But I have every right to moan about when a franchise fails. It's my right as a human being, to express my opinion. I did it with Sonic and I'll bloody well do it with Pokemon. And screw your "friend" for saying they've "dramatically done sooo much to improve the games". They have not! This is a cold hard fact and there's no beating around the bush. They have done, at a push, a bit. They've added new Pokemon and better graphics, ignoring all the gimmicky other stuff, and that doesn't compensate.

Here's a good example of what I mean: Notice how good television series such as Faulty Towers and Spaced only did two series in order to keep the program from going stagnant. Now look at programs such as The Simpsons and Scrubs. Now as much as I love them both they've gone on waaaaaay to long, ruining their once untarnished reputation of comedy gold. Nintendo should have stopped whilst they were ahead. They've ruined Pokemon for me, much as Sega have ruined Sonic.

You weren't there when it was first released (or if you were you would have been too young). Obviously you are going to think the newer games are better because you bloody well played them first you wally (again unless you played the first ones at a really young age). I judge games on the initial impact they gave me when I first played it, so if a game is incredibly similar to the one that came before it, it p*ssed me off.

Also I'm betting that quote was from you.

whoa pokemon is first place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#Top_20_console_games_of_all_ti me)

That's the point, he can learn them all.
I have some very amusing images watching a flying mouse use something like Mega Punch against what's basically a big snake made of of animated rocks.
In my mind of course.

I found the Pokemon series lost its charm after the first three games. It started trying to take itself to seriously and lost any originality it had.
Can't they just let the damn thing die?

Although I'm really annoyed they replaced Mewtwo with Lucario in SSBB. I loved playing as Mewtwo in SSBM, no matter how easily he was knocked of the stage or how slowly he moved around without using Teleport. I've had a liking for him ever since my sister made a comment saying how he looked very much like me. :D

Hmm, that made me wonder. Why didn't Nintendo make a Pokemon game to go with their Wii?
They did. It was the first Wii game to have online capabilities. It was also the first Wii game to be able to interact with the DS.

Can't they just let the damn thing die? ... Although I'm really annoyed they replaced Mewtwo with Lucario in SSBB.
Okay... so you want the entire series to have died ages ago, but you also complain when one character essentially died out too...

I don't really regard any character from any series appearing in any SSB game to be part of their series (and it wouldn't make sense if you did too). It's just a good fighting game that stars characters from previous Nintendo games.

Liking or disliking a particular character from a game doesn't mean I have to like or dislike the entire game or franchise. I just feel that the Pokemon franchise has gone too far and has done little to spice things up.

Hmm. In other Pokemon-related news, Pokemon Platinum is set to be released this Autumn. In Japan, of course.

"Pokemon Platinum is an announced title in the Pokémon series of video games. It will be an enhanced remake of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, in the same vein as Pokémon Yellow, Crystal, and Emerald."

In other words... FAIL!
Why would you buy it Shadowmoon if you've already got Diamond?

The point is me and my sister traded it in ages ago.

After a few months me and my sister began to miss it. We used to play together on it. She's 8, but she acts more like a boy.

So to get Pokemon Platinum would mean that we can play multiplayer i also can now go on WIFI (i didn't have it before)

The reason i'm not quoting posts SF is because i'm on my psp.

OK, ENOUGH. Are you aware that Charmander is actually the WEAKEST for the first gim? Not only fire stuff hurts rock less, BUT ALSO gets damaged more. Bulbasaur is particulary a good one to use, if you use plant attacks. And squirtle was the best option. Heck, it had an attack to drain hp from the enemy... Dunno when he learned it, though :p

I can bet anything that you either had to train more than with Bulbasaur before the first gym, or to get any other wild pokemon.

In the first generation, the capturable pokemon at the start of the game had pathetic stats, whereas the ones found towards the end of the game (namely Psychic pokemon) had excellent stats.

The Red Sash ONLY protects against an attack that would normally kill it in one go! Which is why it has to be a really low-level pokemon, as just about every move will normally KO it when fighting a regular party.

Edit: Whoops, my bad. It's called the Focus Sash, not the Red Sash.

It's not ****, it's not boring, it's not a copycat franchise (it has almost nothing in common with Pokémon), and it's not childish (characters actually DIE, and the third season has an antagonist that's a giant virus that wants to kill everything).

Again, there's nothing in common with Pokémon apart from how there's a bunch of creatures.
I mean, even if it was intended to cash in on the Pokémon craze, it doesn't matter since the end product is so different.

Absolute ****, boring, a copycat franchise and childish.
Inserting cheesy storylines, and and making "the last Pokemon generation style" since the beggining...
I second these opinions.

characters actually DIE, and the third season has an antagonist that's a giant virus that wants to kill everything
Ash died. That doesn't make it any less childish though.

At least Digimon didn't insult my intelligence.
What show were you watching?

And good lord that was a good theme tune

Chaaaaange into digital champions toooo save the digital WORLD!

It was a rip off though. But I honestly don't care it was still good in my opinion. Maybe because I liked pokemon so much as a child.

But at least Digimon knew when to end!

I mean, I don't have a problem with people not liking Digimon, but you should at least have a decent reason for not liking it.

Well, to begin with, the first word that came on my mind was "ripoff". I mean, creatures that (digi) evolve by fighting, have mon at the end of each name, and depend on a human to survive god-knows-why... I mean, thinking about it, the humans didn't even need to be there. Until I saw some SUPER COOL FUSION WITH HUMANS...

Don't get me wrong, people can like it, but I see it as an unoriginal idea, made to sell, that lacked quite a lot of common sense.

It's just... not my kind of thing :-/

EDIT: Now that I think, maybe it arrrived to Spain a bit later :p can't remember

Its not a **** series, and i did like the TV show, but honestly, i feel they looked at pokemon and thought: we'll copy them!

Its not better than pokemon, and it is a copycat franchise which was imo, intended to be similiar. Its not great, or excellent, its just good.

Its popular, but its only popular for ripping off other peoples ideas.

The movie made more sense once you watch the 'baby Mewtwo' scene 4Kids removed. Where Mewtwo's anger and hatred of humanity stems from all his friends dieing on him.
But that's about all that would've made sense. The movie generally aimed for the "rule of cool", and focused more on looking awesome than having a story that made sense.
At least the later Pokemon movies generally didn't do that. Especially the second Mewtwo movie, which had a much more down-to-earth plot of Team Rocket simply trying to catch him and take over his sanctuary.

You should see the original Japanese versions of the films. When 4Kids translate it into English they have to add, y'know, a story. The Japanese animation team aim for the Rule of Cool far more than we do.

I'll certianly give it that though, the show did have actual morals in it. Too many cartoons just have fighting, fighting and more fighting, with pure strength and occasionally good planning being the only thing that improves or succeeds in the show (Especially DragonballZ). If you're lucky, they might tack on an Aesop at the end that's slightly related to a moral thing that happened in the show.

Actually, the Ash dying thing was like WTF!? I mean, he's a pokemon trainer, he uses pokemon to FIGHT, but he only changes his mind on the PERFECT moment to teach a fantastic lesson. Then, dying, and making everyone feel bad. And of course, resurecting.

Morals to teach there: good.

Way to teach it: fail.

Shadowmoon

I think having morals and having sad and happy bits in is good. A show where its just pure fighting and no morals, i'd say is boring.

Which is what is different about pokemon. Its not like spiderman, or any other fighting show, its not just about: I will suceed and become a pokemon master. It actually teaches a lot.

2 episodes taught people how to have seizures, which wasn't to good......

I used to watch Pokemon when it first came out, I had played the ROMs years before it came out for the gameboy here in Spain, and it was a great innovative game. They weren't bad, up to the first gym fight (Raichu possibly?), it was pretty matureish for its standards, there was fighting and there was drama. But then it just kept becoming gayer and gayer. First season btw, no idea what came after that.

About Digimon, I don't know. I remember my little brother watching it on Nickelodeon and I recall watching the movie. It was more of an Anime. Pokemon is more of a Disney Channel crap.

Yup. I had one of those about 10 years ago. You could fit them into other's and they would fight and evolve. I'm under the impression those came out before the Pokemon franchise, but I've found no conclusive evidence.

The Digimon anime was much better than Pokemon anime. I'm still able to watch it now and not want to kill myself. I watched both as a child and I tried to watch a Pokemon movie the other day (I have no idea which one don't bother asking) but I find Pokemon pretty much unwatchable now.

But also Pokemon games are far better than that of Digimon. I prefer Pokemon on the whole but the anime sucks major balls in comparison to Digimon.

Some of the newer pokemon dont suck, I mean, that's only a tiny percentage though, and i also agree that most of the ones involved in the personality test suck.

...And I should just say that for someone wanting to get a good good idea about RPGs, Pokemon is just one of them that everyone simply MUST play because it's great and there's no other RPG out there quite like it that does what Pokemon can do so well. The only problem is...once you've bought, played and enjoyed one iteration of the Pokemon series, be it Blue/red, Gold/silver, Diamon/pearl, whatever...you need never buy another one ever again. For many reasons, but mostly because THEY'RE ALL THE DAMN SAME.
It's a shame too, but I must say and emphasize that anyone who even slightly likes RPGs simply must buy and play a Pokemon game at least once in their life. (preferably just once, though ;))

You're just saying that because it replaced Mewtwo in the Super Smash Bros series.

That's because Mewtwo was brilliant.
No matter how clumsly he was to handle or how easily he was knocked off the stage, he was still awsome to use.

Although I suspect Lucario will basically be the same, he just cannot compare to Mewtwo.
Besides, Mewtwo is much more sinister looking.
