Since this forum is suffering from the rare disease portal pandemonium.....

Yeah. Discuss your aching hearts out about portal.

I played it with my friend yesterday and it is great! the graphics are awesome, and i'm getting it soon. I completed the first few test chambers!

I didn't really think that much of the graphics. They were alright - HL2 quality, but the framerate dropped a lot near the fire, amongst other things.

The setting on the other hand, and the audio/music fitted perfectly. The game as a whole put me rather in mind of a good film; short but enjoyable at every moment.

Also, once you do finish it, the flash portal map pack (http://portalmaps.wecreatestuff.com/) is well worth playing. It took me longer than the original game to complete, and aside from a few minor bugs, was very impressive for custom content. It succeeds in implementing a lot of really great ideas and concepts, but I shan't spoil it ;)

I thought the graphics were rather good...I didn't get FPS drops. Certainly better than HL2 in my opinion; swirly wibbly portal effects and such added some surrealism.

Great musical score, especially the end.

Great gameplay mechanic, unfortunately though, the game was too short.

However, the people at www.wecreatestuff.com have made a 40+ level Portal Map Pack based on the levels they made for their own Flash version.

I personally enjoyed the flash game itself immensely as well.

I think you can't compare it with HL2. HL2 is more based on action, and Portal is more based on reflexion. They are both awesome. :p

And now that you guys are talking about this map pack, it makes me want to open up my Hammer and create some puzzles.

Whilst this is true, I have to say overall I found Portal much more fun to play than HL2. Which is saying something because HL2 is also an insanely good game.

Garry's Mod kicks them both in the teeth though, it has to be said. :p

portal is the first game that managed to impress me in a long, long time.

I was referring to the graphics, but you make a very valid point anyway.

Didn't this game come out in... what, October of last year? Good game, one of the reasons I bought the Orange Box for two different systems. Anyone else snagged the Flash Portal map-pack? Because I'm stuck on it...

Which level?

Oh, that one. Well, create a blue portal in the hole, and an orange one on the floor right in front of that hole. Jump in the blue portal, and when you come out the orange portal, you should have acquired enough speed to fire a blue portal over the glass panel. Now just keep boucing between the two portals until the electrical thing stops.

If you can't jump over the last gap, try jumping and crouching in mid-air, it may help.

You have to get yourself on top of the little glass wall: Fall from where you enter the room into that pit with a portal near the wall. When you're there, place one next to the electricity and jump into the pit and pop out and run accross the field when it turns off. Make sure you know the orientation of the portal, you don't want to leap into sludge.

Oh, I know how to solve that one. But due to my increasingly horrible communication skills I don't know if I can explain it properly.
So I'll make a crapy drawing to explain. I had to use a green colour because I couldn't find anything better to draw with.

WARNING, SPOILERS.

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/9029/explainedou6.jpg

First, you shoot the first portal(blue?) at position number one, then you shoot the second portal(yellow?) at position number 2, you jump at the first portal(blue?), and when you come out of portal number two(yellow?), you shoot the second portal(yellow?) at position number 3, and you go trough the first portal(blue?) and use the momentum you gained from the jump to reach the upper part where the door is. You have of course to time yourself to avoid the electricity.

Unless that's not the level I'm thinking of, that should do it. I am basing this on the flash version tho, dunno if the custom levels for portal are exactly the same.

Edit: Yes, it took me twenty minutes to make this post(I had trouble finding something to draw with) and I hadn't noticed earlier explanations. How ever, I like mine BEST. On the flash game. I don't know if you can place a portal in the wall behind you on this version. :P

The Chain Chomp in your diagram is glorious.

I love the flash map pack. the falling cieling room thing was just evil. pure, concentrated evil!

I should really get back to that so I can actually finish it. no idea how far I am...

and btw S2k. looking at mtl's diagram I realized. you could probably just play through the flash version of the game if you get stuck too much. the levels are very similar if not exactly the same, so it'd be pretty much the same thing to figure out how to do one as the other.

Looks like I wasn't the only one who got crushed by it the first time. I was like, WTF?
I just love how they are playing with psychology for getting the player's attention to point towards something else, making the game a lot harder. Some of those levels are absolutely pure genius.

Sadly without the fire though...

Hmm, I should do that. I'm not bad at using hammer, I sure could stick a bunch of entityflames in there.

The spikes are missing as well. But that's not a bad thing, from what I have seen on my laptop, rendering many brush entities is pretty bad for CPU.

In other news, I came across this:
http://armorgames.com/play/1642/epsilon
It's a 2D portal-esque game, and pretty darn fun!
Except the comparison just ends with the two portals thing: there's no walking around and nothing out to kill you, and it has a lot more aspects to it, such as gravity and 'rewinding'.

Good graphics do not a good game make. Just look at FEAR,

But I think It was plenty fun and I still haven't beaten it because my dad borrowed the disk right after I wiped my HD.

I thought FEAR was rather good, actually. It's certainly better than Doom 3. I'm more of a retrogamer, though - I prefer older games.

I'm pretty sure the spikes were on the first ceiling to come down.
