Noobs seem to be treated badly in some forums. In one forum i go on there is a thread called noobs suck! and on WA, if you do something wrong you get called a noob! i mean online.

What is so wrong about noobs that they have to be treated nastily? discuss here.

Well, to put it softly... most people aren't very nice.

To put it frankly, however:

Because people get good at a game and then get exceedingly cocky and laugh at people who are relatively new to the game in order to make themselves feel better for spending every minute of everyday on their computer (CS:S anyone?).

Because noobs tend to be people who either ignore 'stickies', 'announcements', 'large bold highlighted messages' and many other idiotic things. Take the forums for the SNES emulator ZSNES as an example. there is at least 1 person a month who will spell the emulator ZNES (which does not exist) and as such the forum admins have implemented a filter to call the user dumb when they make said typo.

You may think that was a bad decision for the forum admin, but keep in mind that the name of the emulator is in large writing on a picture in the top left of every forum page and is also mentioned many times on the ZSNES website..

yup, but when its someones first time on a forum, they need to understand more..... at least, thats what i think.....

If the new people doesn't want to understand the forum, I think they don't deserve a chance.

If all new members would just watch this video (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting) before going near an internet forum, it'd make life a whole lot easier for all concerned.


The trouble is that new members often refuse to find out what the specific rules of the forum are and then whinge when they get told off for breaking them, and often then go out on a vendetta-like posting spree to reinforce their point that they're not mature enough to be let loose on The Internet™. And said new members, who are often quite young don't seem to like to be told by the older more mature members the correct "netiquette" for posting on internet forums and thus end up hating those older members forever and getting new members a bad reputation.

Our forum has pretty specific terminology when it comes to newbies, newbs and noobs, which AFAIK is pretty unique.

If it's an annoying guy that takes the nerves out of everyone, because he thinks he's always right even if people prove otherwise, or he makes useless stuff just for the sake of it, for example, should be called noob.

Breaking rules even though he knows them, not observing previously mentioned "netiquette," that sort of thing (Or refusing to learn rules altogether for that matter). Newbie has a meaning older than the internet. And Noob is just a derivation of the word. If some people use it as an insult that's fine, if you have your own private meaning of the word, that's also fine but you should state so.

A quick google search reveals that 'noob vs newb' isn't entirely unique to T17land. Which makes some sense.

Well, that's why I have been lurking in and observing the T17 forum without posting anything for 1.5 years prior to joining it.

That way I accommodated to the insanity and effectively skipped the "noob phase".

It's kind of annoying too because I spent 2-3 years just reading the forum and trying to learn the sway of things but I was still an absolute dickhead when I made my first post.
I guess at that time I was just imature and not good at picking up hints.

Same here, I spent a good half a year just lurking (although less than you and bonz) before I started posting. You would never have guessed.

I see the problem as just a bad flow. I mean if most people on the forum welcomed the newcomers, then the rest would just follow in their footsteps.that works in the majority of situations, yes, but there are some people who are either too immature or just arrogant jerks who just act like they already know everything regardless of how you treat them. we've had our fair share on this forum and they normally don't start off being flamed. some people just don't want to be accepted, or are just too arrogant to realize just how horrible a poster they really are. Fwd. Adm. was a famous example of this. no matter how everyone tried he was just a belligerent idiot.

around here we tend to accept new people to the community pretty well. the intelligence present in their posts to begin with affect how we treat them to start off with and then later on it's affected by how they continue to act on a day-by-day basis. look at .Jet for example of this. he was widely accepted as a competent member of the forum as >DoomWorm<, but then his account got screwed up and he made the new account. when he returned he acted the same as he had before and recieved treatment based on that level of maturity rather than on when he registered the account. no one knew who he was until much later.

despite what many feel, we are a pretty accepting community here. even immature people can grow to fit in so long as they realize their faults and try to fix them. the ones who complain about it are typically those who cause the problems. note how EP_Guy is being watched for posting habits in the thread linked to earlier.

Actually, they are. There's a difference between being new and being a noob. A new person, is just new to something. And as a normal, intelligent person, they will seek information themselves and try to learn before doing things. A noob is an idiot who thinks "tl;dr" and goes on and does stuff without knowing what the hell they are doing.

I'd consider that to be just a heated debate in that, aside from the odd insult on Yakuza's behalf, it's kept civil and there's a genuine debate involved. A flame war is when the insults far outnumber the number of different regular points made, such as what you two (and occasionally MtlA) are all too fond of doing.
And it'd be completely diverted if either of you (especially you, Shadowman) would actually try and make an effort.

Briefly, yes - a couple of weeks ago I saw some real potential in Shadowmoan and the hope was he'd start to turn his act around. Amusingly, he's become more arrogant over the past two weeks. I've given up on him.

You'll just have to be patient.

He's being drowned in a mixture of advice, constructive criticism, insults and spam. I think that he just cannot set his mind straight and focus on the useful posts directed at him - Shadowmoon is oddly trying to force people to stop bullying him and give him the chance when he can just focus on the go-for-the-better part.

However, you guys can help not by showering him with coarse words or negative posts. That will instead make him even worse.

This is just my opinion tho.

don't care whether or not you're stupid. stupid is funny. continue to be stupid and you continue to be a source of amusement to the rest of us, which I think we're all ok with. it's the refusal to accept when you've done something stupid and the yelling at others instead of just laughing at yourself. that's a huge part of the arrogance thing as well. you just gotta learn to not take yourself so seriously all the time. learn to laugh at yourself and you'll find it much easier to laugh at others. you'll also be able to deal with situations a lot more tactfully. this isn't to say you should put up with anyone's crap, just that you shouldn't take yourself so seriously.

as for being wrong all the time: you can't learn without being wrong first. being wrong is helpful if a bit embarassing in different situations. I believe we are all also fine with you being wrong, so long as you don't jump down our throats for pointing it out.

follow the advice given to you in the past and in the present and you'll be accepted much MUCH more around here and in any other community (online and off). I'll be waiting to see how this attempt turns out.

and for the record, shadowmoon; the correct response to yakuza's post would've been no response at all. some people will try to get under your skin as much as they possibly can. obviously this isn't something that you should just accept and laugh at, but at the same time it's not something you should take seriously either. the best way to deal with people like that is to just ignore them. if they continue, then do something about them.

in this instance, I'm fairly sure Yakuza was just trying to make a point, but in the future you will run into people who just want to troll.
