Laptops, IMO are better than computers because you can take them with you.

Its got Windows XP as its OS.

btw, the thing its standing on is an IKEA shelf.

I don't think notebooks are better than pcs when you want to do somethings, that needs much CPU or GPU power. Ok you can use it for office and surfing, listening to music, but when you attach a good monitor or good audio speakers/monitors to it, it isn't very portable anymore.
Not to go completely off topic here are some pics of my desk.

Dell Inspiron 6400, Intel Centrino Duo 2x 1.6GHz core processor, 1 gig of RAM, ATI Mobiity Radeon X1300 graphics card. 80 gig hard drive that the manufacturers, in their infinite wisdom, decided to split 60GB-20GB, with the 20 ostensibly being somewhere to store backups (why would you store backups on the same physical drive? Don't ask me, ask them). Known affectionately as "Colin".

TBH I'm not that happy with it: it gets very hot, particularly where the Dell logo is, and it likes throwing up Blue Screens of Death with something called an NMI Parity Check Error, as well as the occasional freeze-up. I've had it about half as long as my previous laptop (an Evesham model that I named "Geoff"), and it almost seems to be in a worse state of repair (Geoff was fairly reliable - if somewhat slow - until one day, while playing The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis, the screen froze. When I turned it off and back on again, the monitor had ceased to function. I could tell from the noises that the computer made that it was loading okay, but the monitor was all "no dice").

Wow Paul, you have the EXACT same computer as me! Even down to the 60-20GB hard drive split.
Granted, there's probably going to be a few smaller details that are different, such as sound card or the fact that my battery has been so worn down that it now has a max battery life of 1 hour, but still.
Also, it used to give a lot of BSoDs, but now I can't even remember the last time I had one. I don't know what happened, but they just stopped.

(Geoff was fairly reliable - if somewhat slow - until one day, while playing The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis, the screen froze. I take it then that you weren't content on just having a secondary monitor.
I do, but it's because my laptop has a 16:10 screen, which is a pain for playing games fullscreen. The secondary monitor is a good ol' 4:3. Tip for all: try to avoid getting a widescreen monitor as much as you can!

Poppycock. If you have a halfway-decent graphics card you can tell it to "pillar" 4:3 aspect resolutions, meaning you'll get black bars to the left and right of the screen. I can't do this with my current card, but the one I intend to buy with my Stimulus cheque allows me to do so.

That or when you have a game that pushes your computer's limits in fullscreen, so you don't want it to have to deal with rendering windows and stuff as well.

13 May 2008, 00:28
Actually, it only really annoys me when a game starts in full screen mode the first time I play it, and I have to go and alter all my windows and stickies around again. Extremely irritating. How about the default is in a 640x480 window. I always dive straight to the video options anyway, so this won't be an inconvenience. If I can get a game to start in fullscreen at the correct resolution, then I might consider it, otherwise it's a definate no.

I don't play any game in full-screen I believe (well, except WA, but I can't play that anymore, and when I did, the 640x480 fullscreen frontend annoyed me). I like to be able to swap out to other things. Immersion smershion.

Odd, I've always found on my previous pc's that running games in windowed mode makes the games run faster than in fullscreen, even when using the same resolution. :s
Only slows down if I change windows, but not as bad as alt-tabbing while running on fullscreen mode. :P

I'm not satisfied with it, mainly because it's one of those lower-end Packard Bell models which my dad got for me when I didn't know a thing about computers.

And everything except RAM, HDD and CDROM is intergrated.

Internal hardware:

Intel Pentium IV 2.93GHz
256MB+1GB (add-on) DDR RAM
80GB SATA HDD
DVD CDRW Combo Drive
Intergrated Intel GMA900 - 224MB shared memory
" Intel HD Audio 5.1 Channel
" Intel PRO 10/100 Network Connection
" IEEE1394a

External hardware:

Packard Bell Storm 2.0 speakers
Packard Bell PS/2 Multimedia Keyboard (sucks)
Razer DeathAdder Laser mouse
Packard Bell 19" LCD
Logitech webcam

I'm planning on a 2.4GHz 20" iMac (the cheapest in the range), but it's not upgradable (except for RAM), so I'll have some second thoughts first.

What happened was the first one I had in 1999 started resetting two years later and I got that second one. Only last year I got my first one out of the loft and gave the inside a good clean, and it was working like new again. :) Second one has that other reading problem and I've yet to fix it.

I'm shocked at how tidy everyone's desks are. Currently mine has the remains of yesterday's pizza, empty yoghurt tubs, no less than 8 empty jaffa cake boxes (too lazy to throw them out so they've just built up), along with other various crap that has accumulated. My keyboard is on the floor (it's wireless so I just leave it around my room when I need to eat). And I have a pile of washing on my chair, and a randomly placed towel on my desk (I don't even know why it's there).

The photo is back to front because I can't find my camera's USB connector so I had to use the webcam on my Mac which for some reason takes pictures that way.

You can't see the taskbar when you're in full-screen stuff. He probably finds it easier to just have a clock, rather than alt-tab just to check the clock. For example, my monitor seems to take a while to switch between WA and my desktop (I think that's the gfx card, actually, but still).

Vader
13 Feb 2009, 15:56
Are you saying my way of calling them trolls was elegant or that they're elegant trolls? ;)

We're all trolls in our own way.

Basically, it wasn't that uncalled for of Star Worms to assume you smoke, just as it's not for you to assume he eats Jaffa Cakes and is messy.

When you said you hadn't smoked in a while, thomasp took it upon himself to try and prove you wrong. He was being pretty pedantic, yes, but that's because he didn't understand your colloquialism properly.

In this instance nobody is really trolling, but some people are over-reacting.

Usually what happens (from what I've observed, at least, and I may be wrong here) is you say something, someone corrects you (or more frequently simply provides more details than you had), you appear to get irritated by this and a flame war ensues.

You know, it's far too easy to miscontrue what someone has said on a forum. It's too easy to read too much or too little into what someone has said. That's what I like about it - posting is almost like taking a gamble with your words. Anyway, I digress, my point is that you are either very easy to wind up or you play devil's advocate with a little more passion than most would. You're either a troll or troll bait and I guess the same goes for everyone here.

As for finding examples of times you have been wrong, I would be a fool to be lured in by such trollery. I feel foolish enough responding to this, given that you are being quite pedantic and that pedantry is one of the things you argue against so frequently.

90% of your arguments seem to get ignored just to throw in the extra insult and then you later have to come back and explain the argument you gave up.

well you generally don't explain yourself very well and if you do or don't you state whatever you DO say in such a way that you come off as a pedantic ass. .

I think that has more to do with people being uncapable of being unbiased when reading a message, ignoring the messenger. If people took everything I said literally I probably would have to explain myself less times.

Now, I'm aware I could be wrong but there's no reason for me to keep that door open, it's closed and if I'm wrong I'll be pleased to welcome anyone who wishes to come in and tell me, but he will have to open the door himself.

I do get irritated with ignorance quick, I do get in debates over minor things, I do play devil's advocate, but I'll be damned if you can find a post were I was being unreasonable with my argument, and I'll welcome it with open arms.

Left = old PowerBook. Right = shiny new MacBook Pro :D (which went out of date 4 weeks and one day after I bought it...). The MBP was actually to replace a windows desktop as I needed a Windows machine for dissertation work. Hence the random monitor behind.

32636
Mmmmmmm glossy screen... I took that photo to emphasise the glossyness. Its nowhere near as bad as that in use. It is a vastly better screen than on the 4 year old PB though.

32637
As demonstrated here. Nice and contrasty but not excessively so! For those interested (ie, nobody :p) I took the photo of the A380 at last year's Farnborough Airshow.

32638
Yuk! First thing, I did, rather depressingly, was to install Windows :(

32639
The second thing I did was to replace the hideous Windows desktop with the much nicer one from OSX Tiger :p

Now I've finished my dissertation and retired the PowerBook, the MBP lives in OSX virtually all the time.

I can't stand the glossy screen on my macbook. It collects TONS of dust - and trying to wipe it off just makes it clump together. Touching the screen in any way leaves a mark.

With matt screens you don't even notice the dust. Wiping it off is easy and you don't muck the screen up in the process.

thomasp
3 Sep 2009, 12:52
I find that the glossy screen on my MBP (glass screen, rather than just a shiny coating like on the old plastic MacBooks) collects far less dust than my old matte PowerBook. I could never get the PB screen clean and due to the shape of the casing (compared to the MBP) always had huge piles of dust in the corners. Plus I can actually use my MBP with sunlight behind me! I could never do that on the PowerBook, as the matte screen would diffuse the sun and obscure half the screen, rather than just having a bright point of light.

We have the same speakers! Do you also just get sound on the right speaker when the volume is really low?

My new PC, which has Windows 7 :D it can actually do things without been crap, which is great.

I keep thinking i'm using vista, though. Windows 7 looks a lot like vista.

Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E6300 @ 2.80 GHz 2.79 GHz

Memory is 2 GB

Graphics card: Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family, which is not very good. I don't plan to use the new PC for gaming much anyway.

Windows 7 looks a lot like vista.which is good. vista LOOKED decently sexy. it RAN like a steaming pile of trash, though, which is where 7 deviates, thank god.

PAH! Windows7 hardly changed anything in background work from Vista! W7's major forte is its massive amount of UI features and user friendliness!

Except, of course, that Windows 7 is better optimised than Vista and can actually run on many low-end machines Vista could not. It uses less memory, too.

But, y'know, you keep making your blanket generalizations about an operating system you've very openly stated you hate with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns going supernova.

B: Vista wouldn't let me play Call of Duty 4. it kept crashing every few minutes. 7 lets me play it as long as I damn well please. so yes, 7 is better.

7 is a huge improvement upon Vista. It's what Vista should have been in the first place.

First version of vista was pure rubbish, but updated and all, it's just good and stable, never had a bsod or anything. With the 64-bit version that is. Not sure about the 32-bit.

Doesn't meant it was fast as it should have been.

Not sure about the 32-bit.64 was significantly better from my understanding. 32 I had crashes on games fairly often. no BSODs, but crashes nonetheless.

yes, quite. I prefer my old dell dimension case. with blue and gray i believe. plus the wiring makes no sense, there are open slots for hdds, but they have sata cables nicely routed around the back but didn't route the power cables around aswell o0
