View Full Version : I'm new here: which Worms game is the best?

I have yet to own my own Worms game except for Worms 3D, which was a piece of junk! The last time I played a Worms game was at my cousin's house a VERY long time ago, and we were playing Worms 2, which was really fun at the time. I'm getting back into it because I'm seeing the release of new Worms games, but don't know which one to get! In forums, people seem to like Worms Armageddon the best. BUT, I hate to be stuck in the past playing a game that came out in 1999. Can somebody tell me which Worms game I should get? I have an Xbox 360, a Wii, a PS2, a DS, a PSP, a Gamecube, and a Dreamcast. Worms games seem to have come out on all of those systems. Anyway, thanks!

i'm going to go full retro and say that worms: director's cut was the best, but you would need amiga or amiga emulator to run that. game itself, however, can be downloaded for free from dream17.co.uk

failing that, worms: armageddon is still best by far. yes, it was released in '99, but everything since has been just a series of failed attempts to recapture the feel of that game. even if you would rather play something new, get wa first. it cannot be expensive these days. might be hard to find, but it is going to be worth it, and you'd have something to compare the new games to.

The only other Worms game I've played besides Worms 3D is Worms 2! How does Worms Armageddon compare to Worms 2, and why is Worms Armageddon better than Worms 2? I've tried to download the trial version on the Worms Armageddon website, but it crashes when I want to go to Single Player mode, unfortunately. Anyway, which of the NEW ONES is comparable to Worms Armageddon?

worms: armageddon is essentially worms2 + new weapons + new missions + better online play. the only feature of w2 that was cut is extensive weapon customization. you can not set w:a shotgun to fire 25 rounds, and such. but you can still make some adjustments to the power and control the starting amount, amount per crate, and delay, which are the strategically important parameters.

the only 2d worms game released on pc after w:a is worms world party. it doesn't add much of anything new. w:a has stronger community and is continually updated. however, you are most likely to find w:a in something called a battle pack, which will contain w2, w:a, and wwp. so you'll have a chance to try them all and see which one you like best.

the only other 2d worms games* are worms open warfare 1 and 2 (psp/ds), and worms xbox live arcade (360). wow on ds was outsourced, and is said to be a rather poor game (haven't tried it myself). wow on psp and worms live arcade are virtually identical. 360 version got a few bug fixes that psp version never got. also, wow on psp has no on-line play. both of these games have a very basic weapon set, resembling more the weapon set of original worms. wow2 attempts to rectify that problem by adding weapons, online play, and a few other features. on psp, it still plays a lot like wow/wxbla. ds version is said to run more like wwp (again, i haven't tried it.) all in all, wow2 on psp or ds is probably the closest you are going to get to the feel of worms2 in modern worms, but it is still a very different game.

[* i can already see someone saying that these are not the only ones. there is also the original worms series, and if you can find it, it is worth playing, but you said you are looking for something more recent. there are also various versions for gbc, gba, nokia ngage, and various cell phones. they are not worth mentioning alongside w:a]

there is one more game coming out soon. it is worms the space oddity for wii. it is hard to say what it will be like. it seems to go further in the direction that wow2 took.

one final note, since you have psp, try the demo of wow2 for psp. you should be able to grab that from the official site.

About the demos:
The Worms Armageddon demo does not run on Win2k/XP, so that's probably the reason it crashed.
The Worms World Party demo however does run, so you could play that if you want to see all the new weapons they added after Worms 2.

Warning:
Do NOT buy a downloadable version of those games (Trygames or Gametap).
Those will not work with the beta updates. Only retail CD versions (original or budget re-releases) will.
Also, they way too overpriced. You'll could 2 or 3 of the games including shipping for the same price.
(Check out the multipacks (https://secure.team17.com/browse.html?area=selection&productid=24&platform=PC/MAC) on the official T17 store.)

Worms Armageddon is the best in the series now due to the fact it's still being updated.

Ever wanted to watch the games you played at a later date? WA records them.
Ever wanted to play on a map with flexible size limits, up to over 30000 pixels in each direction? You can with WA.
Ever wanted to add the superweapons to schemes you make? You can with WA.
Ever wanted 48 worms in the playing area? You can with WA.
Ever wanted to play on custom full colour maps online? You can with WA.
Ever wanted to.... look you get the point.

Get WA. Seriously, get it.

But how is Worms Armageddon updated? Also, which system should I get Worms Armageddon for? Do people play it online anymore? Anyway, I just tried the Worms World Party demo, and it's just as fun as I remember Worms 2 being! On Ebay, I've seen them for REALLY cheap, and I've also seen the "Double Packs" on Ebay for like $8. It's a really good price for what you're getting.

But how is Worms Armageddon updated?
Deadcode and Cybershadow got the source code (of the PC version) courtesy of Team17 and are officially updating with many new features and tons of bug-fixes. Latest version is 3.6.28.0.

A brief overview of the main features:
http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp/info-updatefeatures.php
Also, which system should I get Worms Armageddon for?
The PC version.
Retail or budget re-release CD versions only, that is.
No downloadable versions (Trygames, Gametap,...).

Worms: Armageddon is by far the best 2D worms game (PC, and don't download either). The only thing it's missing is the mission editor from WWP, really.
For 3D, Worms: Mayhem is the best, and a considerable improvement over W3D.

AYANE
7 Nov 2007, 18:19
Worms Armageddon it is! Should I get the double pack with Worms 2 AND Worms Armageddon, or should I just get Worms Armageddon? There's also some listings on Ebay that sell Worms 2, Worms Armageddon AND Worms World Party!!!! Rediculous...

Get Worms Armaggedon alone, if it's cheaper. You won't want to play Worms2 if you have W:A.

AYANE
7 Nov 2007, 20:17
The double pack was actually cheaper, being only $14.00 TOTAL including shipping. This game is cheap. I'm excited to play online. I'm waiting for it in the mail, along with other things that I've bought on Ebay lately!

The newest is not always necessarily the best.

How can you even say A Space Oddity is the best? Nobody's even had a chance to play it yet!

Is Worms 2 playable online? Also, do a lot of people still play Worms Armageddon online now?

Is Worms 2 playable online?

Yes, though I have to say that I find the lobbies pretty much deserted nowadays.

Also, do a lot of people still play Worms Armageddon online now?

Considering it's 8 years old? Yeah. There are always people in the main lobby.

quakerworm
8 Nov 2007, 03:47
Is Worms 2 playable online?
you'll probably have to agree with someone you know in advance to meet you in the lobby, but yes. w:a is still pretty popular, so you'll always find someone to play against. just make sure you check the rules. there are a lot of rope races, roper, and shopper games. they are also a lot of fun, but you need to find out how to play them, and probably get some practice with the rope first.

Where's that site when you need it?
...

Ah, here it is.

http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp/
This site tells you everything you need to know on installing and updating W:A.

bonz
8 Nov 2007, 15:25
You only need to install the latest beta update v3.6.28.0 (http://wa.team17.com/main.html?page=supp&area=upda&file=15).
It'll automatically download and install the v3.0 patch too if it's necessary (provided you have a working internet connection during installation).

Also, I suggest you visit the channel #worms (http://worms2d.info/Worms_on_GameSurge) on IRC, to get in touch with the Worms community, the beta developers and lots of people from the T17 forums.
People are organizing games there regularily.

Short answer: because it's the only one that's been continuously updated since it's release, which leaves it with more and better features than the other games.

Worms+ (reunited) and it's on Vista :-)
What the heck are you talking about?
"Worms+" is synonymous for "Worms: Reinforcements" and is the expansion pack for Worms 1.
"Worms United" is a combo of Worms 1 and the above.

And I highly doubt that "it's on Vista".
AFAIK, only cracked versions of United worked on WinXP, while the original CD version always needed DOS emulation.

Also, you're wrong.
Worms Armageddon is the best 2D Worms game.
If you need a 1st generation 2D Worms game, "Worms: The Director's Cut" would be better.

Honestly, Worms Armageddon is the best, always has been the best, and will be the best in the future. It's so cool, it's got a Million and One fansites, and best of all, the Ninja Rope is the main weapon! Without the Ninja Rope (called "Rope" in WormNet) Worms Armageddon wouldn't be what it is. You can go through a entire maze with it! And you MUST get it for the PC. Otherwise it would be boring. I also have it for the PS1, as my friend thought that it wouldn't work but it does work on the PS2. I use it twice or three times a year. And it's gone down to once a year ever since I got the PC version. Now enough of me. Here's the lowdown on how to become a WormNet Legend:
1. Get the disk.
2. Download the Patch, then the update. (IN THAT ORDER!)
3. go on http://www.blamethepixel.com, scroll down to "MegaMapPack", and download it. Save it in C:\Team 17\Worms Armageddon\User\SavedLevels. Unzip it.
4. Start to rope.
5. Go on WormNet 5 months later. (if you don't, you'll be called a n00b)
6. Put your roping skills to the test.
7. Continue Practising.
8. Download Pro Snooper from http://worms2d.info/
9. Go on http://www.nolimitfreestyle.com and ask to join.
10. Arrange a time.
11. Rope your very best.
12. register in http://theultimatetourney.sup.fr/ and become well known.
13. (final step) Download The Gimp or Photoshop and make maps.
Congrats. You've become a Legend. Now you'll become as well known as Bloopy, and Splapp, and even Deadcode! (sorry for the long post, but it will help you, I promise)
