You may be vaguely aware of X2, the sequel to Team 17's Project X. A PSone exclusive, it was mostly criticised (even by Team 17 and Ocean staff) as being too difficult. In 1997 the game was later tweaked and published in Japan by Capcom. Now, ten years later and thanks to a co-worker with a fascination for bizarre Japanese gaming oddities, I've finally been able to try the game out.
For a start, it's much easier. I was able to plow through the first level with no problem, and I didn't start to face serious opposition until the boss at the end of Level 2, who destroyed me. The player seems to have a higher tolerance for damage and the enemy movements appear to have been slowed down some. In all, the game is much less tricky but is still a very, very difficult game to play.
That said, it's a much more enjoyable experience. I intend to obtain a copy for myself (I found a chap on eBay asking $40 for his copy, but I reckon I can find it cheaper). In a sense, X2 Japan can be described as the definitive version of the game.
I intend to add screenshots to the [Dream17 Softography+ entry (http://www.dream17.co.uk/softography.php?id=72)] at some point soon (I took a whole heap, but Hypersnap DX crashed on me). Instead, please enjoy these [cover and disc scans (http://www.dream17.co.uk/softography.php?id=72&s=boxart)]
