Yup, that dreaded day is among us again....

I've been in school for about 3 weeks now. what type of school do you go to? I go to a middle school.

I went to school yesterday, grade 11.

My school doesn't start untill the 24'th. :(

College doesn't start till next Monday, and I'm only doing 17 hours a week.

I find it difficult to enjoy anything that forces me to be up early in the morning and involves tedious amounts of travelling.

Good to here! I'm doing Maths, Physics, Chemistry, History and German, but obviously none of them are dosses so I reckon I've some quite hard work ahead.

I depend on unreliable buses. Going home early is a little challenging for me at the momentWell, our busses are fine, but it looks like we might be screwed round a lot by a service change (which we found out about after having bought tickets).

I would cycle like Bunsey, but it's at least half an hour each way, so it's not really practical most of the year.

(I dropped chemistry this year though), I thought it was brilliant fun, especially the Further Maths, since it's such a small class and you're basically seen as superior to all the normal maths classes it can be quite a laugh.

Not sure what grades your all (I'm in 11) in but I'm taking similar courses. Along with the regulars and the hebrews (Ya CHAT!) my electives are: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Media and this double thing with the regular math where it's 2 courses and I take this grade 12 math thingy-ma-bob.

High school is bigger, so bullies don't torment specific people, and there are more cliques, so you can really find people you belong with. People are older and more mature, generally. You still have A-holes, but at least they keep to themselves, mostly.

I'm in high school now, I was never bullied but it's soooo much better than middle school. My grade 8 class had 24 kids in the grade. Lets just say high school was like the best thing that could have happened to school for me. Better teachers, better friends and little homework xD. Well more than usual for me as I'm taking a grade 12 math with my grade 11 courses so that mark will go to university. really have to make it a nice grade :P

That's soo true. Like in middle school everything is everyone's business, and the "cool" kids go around harassing everyone else. In high school people still get in each others' business a little, but you can pretty much do whatever you want and be undisturbed. If you decide to go to school wearing like an elf hat as I did a few times, you'll get some comments and looks, but if I tried to do that in middle school seriously everyone would have taken it from me and rubbed it in the mud and made a huge deal out of it.

Middle School ruled because I had this amazing group of friends that were all very different but all smart (in their own ways) and funny and there is no way they would have ever sat together if there was any notion of cliques.

Now in high school everyone is friends with each other because they like japanese cartoons or bikes or stamp collecting or something and if I want to be with them I have to be with their stupid friends (and I have no doubt half their group thinks I'm a stupid friend or whatever, and that's entirely justified). I guess it doesn't really help that at least 50% of my school is gangsta, 10% hipster, 10% goth-icp, 5% weird anime kids and 15% kids smart enough to maintain a close nucleus of friends all their life v:-/v

Also who gets less homework in high school, nobody does, nobody, you aren't getting less homework in high school unless you had some seriously crazy teachers in middle school because you don't seem to be taking remedial courses or anything.

I found the rate at which I got homework was pretty constant throughout most of Secondary.
If you count coursework as homework that is.

Although looking at it that way, that would mean I got the most homework in Y10 and 11, due to the bloody ICT Course I was doing.

weel it depends in some subjects doing homework helps me eliminate stupid errors. in math by doing homework i went from an 87 to a 96.

Depends how much gets covered in a lesson, at A-level you need homework in (further) maths just to keep up with the course. But back at GCSE when you covered one topic every two weeks then homework was a tad pointless.

Our further maths teacher isn't actually here at the moment and our substitute can't make it a lesson a week. Not helpful.

In the first PE lesson at our first school, the only intoduction teacher who spoke, spoke about stories of people forgeting to bring thier underwear, towels, and forgeting to wash, though I belived it to be a load of rubbish, and them to be largely underestimating the intelligence of people, and to make fun of us and give us a giggle. I still fear the two lettered lesson though. [because RE is now "beleifs and values", and IT is ICT] strangely PE is never like the way they desribed it.

heck, i'm a main bully victim, and due to that, i have developed my own self defence tactics and in return i'm startin to be a bully myself.

I had a hard time in math today. My friend and I were sitting close together and somone from the other table started picking on him. we were in the middle of some math game where you had to team up with the people at your table (me and my friend, Ben, were the only ones at our table) and write the answer down on a small board with a marker.

Well me and Ben were just writing down the answer when Jacob started to do things like take ben's marker and board and telling him he would beat him up (which is weird since he was half of Ben's size.) and then when ben said he didn't care, Jacob said that he would have people help him beat him up.... which prooved to me that he was a coward. They continued to argue and Take each other's stuff until class was over. I wanted to do somthing but Jacob was always friendly to me so if I stood up for ben then Jacob would probably hate me.

You're right about bullies, and most of them stay in groups and if they decide to fight somone they fight in groups of 5 against one kid, which is really cowardly.:mad:

Yea, that's a big problem. It's well known that on the rare occasion you might find a pikey (and I use this word to refer to the chavy, smoking, drug using filth of society who did almost nothing at school but bully people, as we call them, not gypsies) on his own, if you did anything to him he'd get you with a group of mates later.

The best thing is just to not fight them unless you have no choice. I remember taking our football back from one once, with very little force considering, humiliating him. As I walked away he punched me in the back of the head*. Later he came up to be with a group of friends (who were probably just there for moral support) and challenged me to a fight.

The thing is, it would have been the worse possible decision to accept, even though I'm fairly sure I could have had him. As it was I refused, took the punches he dealt me and kept refusing, while telling how hard he was for hitting someone who wasn't fighting back. Eventually the crowd dispersed and I walked away with my head held high. Sometimes you have to fight, but it's always best to avoid it.

I have bullies at my area. They are stupid and mean in my opinion, sure mabey I am a grumpy person who doesn't smile so much, it's their fault! they have made me so angry I have nearly killed them. once somone was realy annoying me and I got angry, and wanted to "teach him a lesson" but did nothing. a few lessons later I found out that he had a pen knife with him, and had been sent home. So I was the one in danger!

I find a swift kick in the crotch generally seems to keep people off my back...
Although, then again, I do go to an all-boys school where fighting is strictly disciplined, even when it's outside school.

Yea, there's nothing wrong with a nice little teacher-bashing (excpet liteally assaulting them in most cases). I know some teachers who *deserve* to be humiliated and mocked about to the widest possible audience, and as far as that goes, IT teachers are often the worst offenders.

Also, don't drop out of College 2 years in a row for stupid reasons. It might have felt like the right thing to do at the time, but that piece of paper at the end of it is damn handy. And it beats the hell out of a 48 hour working week doing a pointless job you hate.

You might think school is awful, and can't wait to get away from it, but take it from me - your school years are among the best of your life. You've not got a care in the world compared to when you leave.

It was in Year 8, last lesson of the day was Music. We go to music(new building outside), we wait a few minutes, no teacher arrives. We eventually find out we're meant to go to room 9. Long story short, I accidentally say the rest of the class(the troublemakers,etc.) were outside. Then they all come in saying "Why'd you do that?" and other insults. The whole lesson I could hear people talking about me behing my back and when I looked back, they glared at me! I thought I was dead when the lesson finished. Luckily, I was fine.

Yeah. I don't mind "Depends who you're snitching on" because, although it's incorrect, it's also standard colloquial English so I don't notice. But "Depends whom you're snitching on" falls between two stools and just ends up sounding pretentious.

I know I only have a limited knowledge of such grammar, but whom is the objective form of who, it's not restricted to following a preposition. The person who you're snitching on is clearly the object of the sentance, so whom should be used.

Unless you're arguing that you shouldn't finish a sentance with a preposition, but that's a bit pedantic.

and, to defend yourself against bullies, and you're small, do the following:

1) If the bully attempts to punch you and runs towards you, you will need good timing to do this.

Ensure that his hands are reaching out for you.

Once the bully nears you, quickly step aside of his path and GRAB his arm by the wrist. Yes, GRAB. Then, pull his arm towards you and run under his armpits, thus twisting his hand. once you are behind him, push the arm upwards, where his fingers are at the back of his head and his elbow on his backbone. continue to push his elbow upwards. it will hurt. this is my favourite move.

Note: you need to do this very quickly.

2) A slight variation to method 1. GRAB his wrists, this time lift them above your head and twist them like in method 1, only that you stay in front of him. (easy tip: grab his wrists and just turn 360 degrees while gripping on tightly to his arm) Jump up, and then as you land, push his arm downwards so that the arm is going down faster than you are. most people will fall to the floor in pain.

3) If he runs towards you, lift your leg and do a sidekick at the following positions:

No, it won't. Chairs in school are either cheap plastic or cheap wooden and are rarely heavy enough to hurt and, if they are, they're ridiculously cumbersome weapons. They're invariably used by people who want to look big and hard and angry, but don't actually want to fight (if they did, it'd be all fists and Glasgow kisses). This is always obvious, and you'd just look plain silly.

Seriously, have you ever actually got in a proper fight? Because everything you've said so far seems more fanciful than based in reality.

And also, don't get super mad - ever. If you get mad you do stupid things. Keep your head and walk away unless you have no choice is my advice.

Finally, I dislike the way this is becoming like a fighting tips thread. I'm making this post to illustrate the 'don't do silly things' point, which given some of your attitudes I think really needs making, but if it stays like this I'm just going to have to ignore this thread.

mines like 1.7 years old I hated her when she came and i hate her now. useless and stupid...the old excellent principle moved up into some administrative position of the different campuses combined.

A couple of years ago we had a new one, and everyone hates her (I'm noticing a pattern here), even people who can't remember the old Headmaster. I used to clash with her a lot (mostly because I deliberately ignored her new rules, rather than actual misbehaviour). Apparently now you're not allowed to wear scarves unless they're black. I never wore a scarf, but I have a feeling were I still there I'd come in wearing the brightest one I could find.

Mind you, I've left now, so apart from having to listen to my sister ranting about her she's not my problem.

Yea, but it's the principle (of the matter). Our uniform rules were always just that we should wear our uniform, have our shirts tucked in and top button done up. Now we must always wear our jumpers unless given permission not to, mustn't wear certain colour scarves, and many similar rules which erode our/the people who're still there's rights needlessly.

I suspect that has a lot to do with going from top sets to mixed ability classes though.

From Year 7 to Year 9 to GCSE to A-Level to undergrad to postgrad, you'll hear the recurring theme of "well, actually, it's not like that at all". Just grin and bear it, because it's a fun and interesting subject once you get past this particular insanity.
