View Full Version : Tram17 - what are we going to do with it?

Yesterday, during an immensely fun TeamSpeak session (I think Zero, Munkee and Matty are going to have to combine their recordings into one long uber-recording and put it up to listen to), I purchased Tram17.com on a whim. Matty has set up webpace for it [here (http://tram17.wurmz.net/)] and I've changed the nameservers for the domain this morning but they don't appear to have taken effect just yet.
The question is: what do we do with that webspace?

Put lots of crap there.

What about a new forum for the community? One that we have control over?

Nahh. We should work on making this one right rather than make another one. I don't want to split the community any more.
http://wurmz.net said it well when it was given the option, more than three years ago.

It should be pointed out that I found the tram - the photo was taken by one of the people I watch on deviantArt

I was thinking less of a Team17 Forum Replacement, and more of an Open Discussion that anyone can visit.

Hmm. Maybe we could put applicants on a twenty-post trial, like they do at the "Simon Wai's Sonic 2 Beta" board. If they can convince us within twenty posts that they're worth their place, we let them stay.

Open Discussion is a closed community with a very limited user base. It cannot be replicated and made public, it would no longer be Open Discussion. Besides, I don't want to have to visit more than one forum. You already have Dream17's on the go, make best of that, and RealVG, both of which are very quiet.
EDIT: And if not, they simply register a new account. That's a lot of work.

I'm a realist - I don't think D17 is ever going to break out of its shell and become a Hip Place To Be™.

Not helpful. Think about what's just happened.

Won't be much left to read here though..

Not if you keep that attitude. Things will change if we work for them to.

Please do this.
Do many of you guys talk on teamspeak/skyper/ventrilo or whatever? That'd be kinda fun..
Hosting an OD vent server would rule..

We who're involved in RealVG discussed sharing the cost of a dedicated server for hosting all kinds of wonderful services but not many people were interested. Perhaps it would be different here or if more people were willing.
How many people are you thinking of though? If there was only a handful, couldn't someone with a fairly beefy internet connection host a teamspeak server as a temporary thing?
I've never actually used Teamspeak though, so I don't really know how it's normally used.

I wouldn't expect that person to leave his computer on all the time.
Oh c'mon, lots of people leave their computers on 24/7.
But what program? I prefer Ventrilo, there's a free server client, but it caps at 10 people. You can probably find older versions or something to get around it though..

TeamSpeak doesn't do that. What's the difference?
I wouldn't recommend anyone leave their computer on 24/7, I'm energy-conscious! Mind, we'd be doing the same if we rented a dedi server, sooo...
I dunno what's gonna happen to it and I'm fresh out of ideas, but when I go there as-is and just see the tram and the big friendly letters and all the purple... I do feel safe. :)

The problem you have when you create a new forum is that you fill it with loads of subforums even when no-one's made any posts yet
It's like making yourself a coffee with ten mugs
You should always start out with a general discussion and add new subforums as and when they're needed so the entire forum doesn't peter out

Hosting an OD vent server would rule..We've had our fair share of Teamspeak OD Gatherings. It's as fun as it is confusing.

why don't you post more
Ok, I downloaded the TS server and set it up. Try to connect to it!

Not a permanent sollution since I will be moving in ten days, not sure I can keep hosting after that. Also, I will generally have my PC on from 11:00 AM to around 3:00 AM. (Sweden's in GMT+1)
[11:15:03] No reply from server
Maybe the server is offline
or maybe teamspeak is not running on it
Not good?
I assume you simply bung in the IP and press connect?
Woops, I hadn't opened port 8767.. should work better now.
Hmm, still the same problem. Although I found this:
TeamSpeak Server uses by Default Port:
TCP/IP port: 8765
and
UDP Port: 8766
You can change the TCP/IP port in the tsserver.ini file. The UDP is always TCP/IP port +1
Or could it be my end?
No, it wouldn't be your end, I'm just failing. I added the port it said I was connected on, not what the faq says I should open ;). Anyway, server ports are now open.. but that's no guarente it will work.
I mean, I am behind a router on a ADSL line. But I've hosted a vent server successfully before, so it shouldn't be impossible.

I'm out of tricks, but I'll keep it running all day in case someone else tries and has better luck. So I'll probably give up after that =P

Have you tried connecting to yourself to see if that works?

Bug'rit. When I get home I'll set my PC up a TeamSpeak server. it's pretty much online 24/7 anyway, although our broadband provider has a nasty habit of resetting our connection between 3am-5am GMT, so the connection may get lost momentarily, albeit once, during those moments.
I'll post details later.
