View Full Version : Idiocy and the prevelance thereof

I have watched the forum slowly dissolve into a festering pile of baboon excrement over the past four years. It was bad a couple of years ago, but it's become worse over the past few months.

We have people posting [nonsensical ramblings about dragons and chips (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=594487&postcount=32)] and [being applauded for it (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=595028&postcount=39)].

We have people trying to [explain an idea they had (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=593369&postcount=1)] using words which don't exist in an order which doesn't conform to any sort of sentence structure known to mankind.

We have people posting [spectulative lists as though it's Insider Knowledge (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=33284)], and then [trying to give said information to people who actually work for the company developing it (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=594713&postcount=21)].

So I've had enough. If I catch anyone being stupid, I will call them on it. Simple as that.

Thanks for reading.

Hopefully now the fact that usermods can temporarily ban people should stop a little idiocy. Although it seems that some people have very short memories and have already forgotten about the new rules for FanArt.

Incidentally, about 120 infractions/warnings have been issued by the mods & admins since we introduced the infraction system a year ago (almost to the day :D)

Yes, I admit to my share of stupidity, but most of it came about when I started using the forums, two years ago. Most of the members that spurted out of nowhere in 2005 mellowed out. But this newer spurt of new members is just plain annoying.

So now is my formal apology for any idiocy over the past two years. Though I don't care if anyone reads it. I think this just needs to be said.

Mostly I apologise for being a stupid little child when I was 11. I also apologise to pigbuster, who has given me nothing but constructive critisism on my art for the past two years and I just recently started using it instead of throwing it in his face. (Except for the lines too big thing. I just like big lines.)

Mostly, I apologise for making you read this.:p Oh, and don't make this seem like a Fwd.Adm apology, because I do admit I was pretty stupid back then. And sometimes I still am but usually, it's funny stupid. right?:p

Oh, and don't expect me to be serious anymore. Nothing but jokes for now on, cuz I just wasted a couple of minutes of my life typing that. I feel some things should be enforced a little more.
Mainly, no txt tlk. No 1337. And would it kill some of you to start your sentences with capital letters, but not have the rest of the sentence LIKE THIS? And exclamation marks are annoying. Kay, I'll stop whining now.

Thank Glod:p

Despite the fact that I have nothing to compare that figure too; I feel like that is a very small for amount for the amount of stupidity that I see and attempt to avoid.

It took me a while before I realised that it's not that each new wave of forumers aren't stupider than the last, but that the last just got smarter.
But recently, it really has been invaded by downright idiots! But I expect that it will die down after the release of WOW2.

Oh, and those Eggi posts aren't new. There's been plenty of posts like that being applauded throughout the history of the forum. In fact, if you check whose doing the applauding, most of it is by forumers who have been around for some time.

Nah, Bush got in because of his family, and because his stupidity was easily manipulatible by other people in power, not because it was applauded.

Incidentally one forum-goer I have become particularly intolerant of recently is Franpa.

I can't stand him, and it's begun to present a serious problem for me. He loiters in the WA forums, offering inapplicable advice to problems he knows nothing about. He likes to pretend he has some deep, inner understanding of just how WA functions when really he knows no more than I do. He holds himself as an important figure in the community, whereas the only function he provides in it is to spread mis-information (often it is mis-information he himself has concocted).

I used to laugh and ignore him. Others use the Franpa Alert scale, and I started to use it too. But now I am thoroughly fed up of him, and if he posts something stupid I find myself writing personal attacks which, really, is not the sensible way to behave. CyberShadow called me up on it a couple of days ago and suggested I simply take it to PMs, but I am instead just trying to curb attacking Franpa altogether.

That has had the knock-on effect of causing me to be really short-fused with any other form of stupidity, ignorance or general idiocy that manifests itself on the forum. And there is a lot of it around at the moment.

I toyed with the idea of uprooting myself from the Forum community, but I've tried that before and it never sticks. None of us Oldies are actually able to leave the forum any more than we're able to, say, cut off our own hands, or stop breathing.

So if I'm to spend the rest of my days floating around on the T17 Forum, I would at least like people to try and spell their words correctly, read the posts other people are writing before responding to them, and generally stop being intolerable buggers.

If someone is dishing out dangerously wrong advice, then report it. Cybershadow can delete posts from the two WA-related forums as well.

It's not quite the same tough. You can't quite smell Eggi, and you don't have to read his posts. As I see it, he is not harmful to anyone, but does manage to amuse some people, myself included.

I can understand when it's someone like franpa who likes to give advice witouth knowing what he's talking about, or people making some really stupid posts one after another, or when people use the forum as a chat and start having 2-3 people conversations about pointless stuff. Because we're talking about something that keeps going on day after day and do becomes annoying, but Eggi hardly ever posts, even if they are nonsensical ramblings, and usually does so in rather unimportant threads or threads that started as being stupid in the first place.

I don't think it's worth deleting his posts or watch him/ban him unless he makes a habit of posting. Just put him on your ignore list if you dislike him.

[Slight Rant Warning, though I'd hope it'd be with good reason that I rant here.]

I rarely ever post (I mean, there've only ever been three short phases when I've posted; when I first came, when the Worms 4 demo came out, and when I started producing fanart), but as a lurker (for around 3 years ish) you tend to see quite a lot, and I do agree that the forum has almost degenerated into a cesspit of 1337 speak and stupidity, when in previous times it was full of kind people who wanted nothing more than to play a game or two, and have fun.

It seems that the current wave of stupidity seems to come from a growing number of people seeing being stupid as a way of getting attention and filling their unfulfilled egos. And true, standing agaist it may be a way of getting to the moral high ground, and thereby becoming more respected, yet stupidity still prevails through lack of respect for out previously beloved (couldn't think of a better word) seniors who have now become percieved as the bringers of criticism, though it may be helpful, and the enders of fun, though that is actually a service to those who post responsibly (again, I'm stuck for words) and generally respect the other members of the forum by ending the fun when the fun has turned to spam (I'd post an artistic representation here, but I don't have one).

Though we were all stupid and unaware of the order of the forum when we first arrived (some of my first posts were really lacking tact of any kind), we soon became aware and integrated into the community (well, I've been lurking, but most have). However, some of this new wave of members are becoming increasingly ignorant of the rules of the forum that keep it in order, though there have been those in the past that have been so, there seem to be more in this current wave. Though this may be to do with the increased abundance of technology available which can be used to view the forum, or the increasing ease with which it can be used, thereby allowing younger and most likely less experienced people in the world of the internet forum (I refuse to imply that younger people are stupider; I know some very clever young people).

Now, going onto a point which Paul mentioned in his Fanart thread related to the growing stupidity, silliness is fine. Silliness made the forum the fun it was. However, I'd like to see less sarcasm around (though I know few people who do not understand the term sarcasm), because it is getting new members confused (they can't understand and so this leads to back-spam, just like the spam that is generated when we can't understand the idiotic people's shortening of words sometimes), as well as by the large number of in-jokes (though these are an integral part of the forum, and therefore I'd like to see them stay. SLORG OWNAR).

So, how to counter stupidity? Well, it could be done in many ways, because it's a bit of a vicious circle. People act stupidly. They are praised. They continue to be stupid for want of the praise. So, to stop people act stupidly, do not condone it. Praise from anyone to anyone who is acting stupidly/idiotically (not in a silly way, though - a line will have to be drawn) will escalate the problem.

So there ends my observations, interpretations as to the cause, and possible solution (though there cannot be a true solution as there will always be those who want to be ignorant, act stupidly, and be praised through their acts).

If you read all of that well done, and atleast that's a rant over. This was the thread I found that it fitted into best. Let's hope all the idiocy ends for the good of the forum.

If this post offends any parties, I'll be willing to take PMs. But of course, you won't, for fear of admitting you're stupid :P. I may have expressed my point in completely the wrong way, and in which case I'm sorry, and if that is the case then am willing to take infraction points (though in that matter there is no argument anyway, if I have behaved stupidly then I will take it as a constructive criticsm and use it to improve my behaviour).

I think everyone had a good laugh at that when that came out a while ago. I'll admit I did wince when he went out of character into 1337

Come on, you have to admit that has at least some kind of comedy value, if just the juxtaposition of him and you. If you didn't find it funny you wouldn't have put it on the internet for everyone to see.

.....you're not welcome in this thread anymore..

And that post was really sarcastic

Though this may be to do with the increased abundance of technology available which can be used to view the forum, or the increasing ease with which it can be used, thereby allowing younger and most likely less experienced people in the world of the internet forum (I refuse to imply that younger people are stupider; I know some very clever young people).

I agree with most of your rant, but I definitely see a trend as like 90% of the people apologizing for past stupidity say "I joined when I was 11, I really wasn't smart but I've become older and smarter, etc." But some 11 year olds do express themselves better, I haven't read any of his posts in a while but I remember hdhdhd being remarkably coherent. I rag on people now for incoherency, but I was probably one of the stupidest people when I signed up.

So, how to counter stupidity? Well, it could be done in many ways, because it's a bit of a vicious circle. People act stupidly. They are praised. They continue to be stupid for want of the praise. I can only think of two people right now who recieve un-sarcastic praise for their stupidity, and they are Gingerneck and Eggi. And Gingerneck blew out his superstardom too fast and is old. I don't think Eggi is that big of a problem, for the reasons MtlAngelus already mentioned. And for every time a regular sarcastically compliments someone, there will be a few people there to be like I Dont Get It? It Sucks.

I do agree with the rest of your post, though.

edit: And I was actually beginning to really like Akuryourkyu at the end, there.

It happens every once in a while whenever a new game is released. I joined a few weeks before W3D came out IIRC and I was a complete retard; talking like this!!!! :):):cool::(, making completely useless threads and being extremely obnoxious, which I'd like to apologize for.

Since the day I joined, the forums have never been truly spam and idiocy-free; whether it was a hilariously bad fanartist that wouldn't take any criticism (worm_boy, twist_worm) or someone making a thread asking if anyone shares his half animal fetish and expecting us to take him seriously (you know who you are), or even the completely useless marshmallow avatar thing (which I was part of; I seriously apologize for that nonsense), the forums were never 'spam-free' during the last five years.

"I read the whole thing, and there isn't a single word there I disagreed with. Well put."

Thanks for reading the whole thing Squirminator2k. Actually, I doubt the people whos actions it concerns would understand it, due to the round-about way in which I made my points. That, or they wouldn't be bothered with reading the whole thing.

"But some 11 year olds do express themselves better, I haven't read any of his posts in a while but I remember hdhdhd being remarkably coherent."

Again, "I refuse to imply that younger people are stupider; I know some very clever young people." Some do express themselves more coherently, though at the moment these people are in the minority. You being stupid/incoherent when you joined and now ragging on those who are incoherent now, though some smartarses may say that that's a bit of hypocricy, what they fail to realise is that you knew no better when you joined the forum, and neither did anyone else. What seperates the stupid from the rest of us on this forum is that we have grown to become coherent and aware of the rules that have (up until recently) kept the forum from degenerating into a cesspit of 1337 speak and spam, whereas the stupid seem to not care, be ignorant of the rules and become incoherent in a bid to try and reply to messages as quickly as possible with as few capital letters, full stops and letters as possible (man, I'm sounding like an English teacher now).

As for your second point Pickleworm, that section, as most of the rant, is an opinion, expressed as a suggestion, and based on observations. So I don't particularly have anything else to say really on that point.

"Except maybe recently Gingerneck"

I think Gingerneck, though I haven't seen the posts relating to his Being Watched status, from my observations it seems that though he can criticise others art, and saying how crap it is with no real suggestions or pointers as to why (thereby not being constructive criticism), while not accepting criticism from others.

Again, most of the points expressed are opinions based on observations.

Thats because the posts gingerneck made were very quickly removed. (it just so happened that I was online when he made his first post and AT was online when he made his second, a few hours later).

By removing the offending posts in SpamArt, we're hoping to cut down the spam in there and actually get a bit of art posted that is halfway decent.

Well, any thread that doesn't start with a picture is deleted at once, so that goes for the 'I Need' threads too.
Actually, the only 'I Need' threads that I can think of anyway are 'I Need a Sigworm', and they don't go in the fanart.

Alas, the "I need a sigworm" threads usually are posted in the fanart section because I know a lot of newbies do not read the rules.

Oh, and I also agree with whoever said it that infractions should be placed upon those who type that txt-tlk junk.

I'll be honest (since I loathe 'txt-tlk' more than most), I'd much rather see sensible posts lazily typed than spam with vowels. I think the clarity of the anti-spam message would be diluted if we started introducing any other minimal-tolerance rules.

Unless 'txt-tlk' actually causes spam somehow, which is possible, I guess.

On the other hand, typing vowel-less and such is just too hard to read sometimes. I lot of the time I can't understand what people are saying.

Yes, that post was an example of how if you spend a little more time typing, your point of view can be understood much more easily.

Pigbuster, that's cool (though I've heard it before), though it does not relate to txt speak so much as it doesn't include the shortening of words that characterise that type of expression so much.

I should probably all get you for spamming well said, but oh well. That and the large hordes of you now apologising as if it's a stupidness amnesty (though that's a good thing; you apologising that is. I have too, it's fine :D). The only real problem with this is that I haven't seen any of the really stupid people apologising yet.

I'm not sure whether I should start posting fan art again, but then some of the other art seems so good (though the rest of it is just spam).

Aah well. Its nice to see the crackdown on stupidness gaining momentum.

Oh, and I also agree with whoever said it that infractions should be placed upon those who type that txt-tlk junk.

What those people who need sigworms could do is look at some of the artist's threads on the forum and PM a request to a few of them with a description of their desired sigworm.

I agree with the infractions on text talk. They should be minor... but I'm betting they will add up after awhile.
I also agree with cooee345, younger people can be smarter, but I think we have a deficiency in that department. While I'm at it I'll make an apology for how I acted a couple years ago. Sorry.
Although losing my internet for half a year I think somewhat helped...

Well, I apologise for all the stupid things i'v said. Numerous but not too many I think...although some were really big.

You have to remember that some people join the forums and post straight away. I'm guilty of that, I posted before I even read one word. Well I did search for my original problem, whatever it was. Then I decided to stay and try to help others. That failed because I simply know less then those who frequent in the WA section. When I know the answer about 60% of the time somebody got to it before me. I have given bad advice before (not much to my knowledge) and I've continued spam. I've fought (can't remember his name) because he thought my posts were wrong and he was very rude. When it turned out I was right, I went to another thread and again continued spam fighting for Paul and his right to post extra information. Now I realize that although I fought on the right side in both cases (my opinion on the second ;) ) I shouldn't have done it.

I apologize for idiocy, spam and agreeing with trippenz (wow do I feel stupid).

Oddly enough, I think things have improved, despite very little actual moderation going on. With any luck things'll settle into this groove and any rules or otherwise will fade into the background.

Have you ever posted at Something Awful? You should see the rules there. It's $10 to register an account, so if you get banned you can just unban yourself for $10, and you can get banned for...

Yeah, that was a mistake on my behalf. I should have said something like "and Saddam was not a particularly interesting person towards the end of his life."

Back on track, W:OW2 is nearly out, so a lot of all those posts asking what's in the game dispite it not being out yet should hopefully go away.
Or, at least a while after, anyway. There always seems to be a bundle of those questions just as it comes out for those people that are too impatient to wait for when they get the game themselves.

Unless that "somthing" is a Team17 or THQ employee, you'd do well to keep that sort of thing to yourself. You're treading on thin ice with me at it is.

Edit: Actually you've just broken it. You're a negative little twonk who's primary existence seems to be purely to follow Plasma around from thread-to-thread and back him up when he's talking nonsense. You're a pain in the ****, as well. "Last of the Summer Wine"Fair's fair, that was a good series for a while.

At least, before it jumped the shark, three whales and a passing albatross (you should worry when you have three characters left from the ensemble that started the series several decades ago).

How am I negetive I think i've brought more joy then anything and right now your post seems a bit neggative actually this thread's main topic is negative. all i've said in my previous post was that I don't think there will be another W:OW... WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT! and at least I don't make up words like Twonk I even tried looking it up there's no such thing. and I don't follow plasma around, he's everywhere look at all the threads, he's in most of them. about the alien thing... your either watching or reading to much sci-fi or you've got a big imagination. and I don't know what "last of the summer whine" is but it must be awfull, it sounds like the movie "gone with the wind" and trust me just the advertisment of that movie looked terrible.

I'm surprised you would just explode on me like this because we have had some friendly times (like the PM ) and some times were we seemed like the worst enemies (like the conversation in the "no more future for 3D" thread, wich was weird because we were both online at the same time.) anyway, I have half a mind to report that post but I don't feel like doing it for some reason. I don't know if your having a bad day or what but I hope you say your sorry.

Edit for Clarity
To an extent, Shadowman is right. I don't think I've been picking on the wrong people, although I have perhaps lashed out at Pieman for no real reason for that I am sorry. I think that this forum, the way that it has degenerated over the past two or three years, has left me bitter. I used to have fun here. I used to like it. There used to be a real sense of community and fun here.

Now, though? Now it's full of idiots. People don't think before they type. People don't read what other people are writing. It was irritating a year ago, but it's actually made me angry over the past couple of months. Why isn't it fun to hang out here anymore? The old Veterans of the forum all hang out somewhere else, and I can still join in conversations with them, but they don't post in the main forums here as much anymore, and the doors have opened to a bunch of illiterate morons who think they know more about the games than Team 17 do.

I've invested too much of myself in the forum, and I've developed a sort of emotional bond with it. It's been a sort of de facto "place to hang out" for me online. And it's been really, really uncomfortable watching the conversation around here grow stagnant and uninteresting. Perhaps I've become too emotional about the whole thing. Perhaps I've lashed out at people. Again, I'm sorry if I had a go at anyone who didn't deserve it (although Plasma and Starlover1 really are idiots).

So this is me, saying goodbye for now. There really is no point hanging around on a forum that makes me angry when I read it. It's doing nothing for me, and it's certainly not making the experience enjoyable for anyone else. I've become something I'm not happy with, and in order for that to change it's best I just leave. So I will.

Dream17 isn't going anywhere, of course. If anyone here feels a personal vendetta against me I advise you contact me there. I hope my manic behaviour here hasn't impacted anyone's opinion of that website, or indeed any of thr websites I'm affiliated with.

So long for now.

This used to be a fun, great community. Now it's rather full of idiots, and it's become a rather dull place.
There used to be great forum stories, now you only get crap on a stick... there used to be fun forum games, and now... crap on a stick again... there used to be great fanartists, now... only a few good artists and loads of crap on a stick. There used to be a lot of fun people around that you could engage in fun discussions with, now you can't even try witouth some idiots popping in and ruining the whole thing with some extremely noobish and/or lame posts.
Even tough S-2k seemed rather aggressive this past days, he used to be (and still is) a great forumer, he contributed a lot to the community, and him leaving is not a good riddance, it's another sign that this forum is dying.
You are right in a way tho, if we all senior forumers leave then the likes of you will probably enjoy it more, but this forum will become yet another source of retardation for the world. The solution is not for the smart people to leave, it's for the stupid people to understand they are stupid and try to become smarter.

The problem with Plasma is, he's full of himself for no real reason... now I've seen that done for comedical value but Plasma is just not funny and should stop. He seems to think he's smart and/or funny just because he can impress a couple of idiots, when anyone with a brain can tell the guy has a long way to go, so him bragging around is about as annoying as Paris Hilton...

Although, that's the only thing in Splinters post I agree with. S2K leaving will be a loss, and frankly I think all his 'whinging at one person or another' was pretty justified because, lets face it, regardless of whether the forum has been worse before (which is completely irrelevant) it's pretty damn bad now. Most of the forum is spam it seems these days, and most of that isn't even good, enjoyable spam, but the inane crap by the people S2K was 'whinging' at.

Well, yes and no. I'd settle with "it's different" rather than go through all the archives to remember what it was ALL like. I can remember quite a bit, but hardly even enough to remember the overall impression on it.
Although some things do seem to be the same. I pretty much turned out as the new Akuryou, and most of the older seniors all been replaced by the Worms4 generation. However, the really good artists like Splapp, Philby and Huntakilla, have just stopped, and haven't really got replaced by anyone with equal talent, save MtlAngelus.
But there is the thing that this forum has a high intelligence standard, so the longer you've been here for, the smarter you get. That's fine and all, but it means that forumers keep thinking that the ones joining after them keep getting stupider and stupider. Also, the forum's gotten a lot bigger, and a number of older people don't really like that.
Oh, and there's W:OW2 coming out too. Whenever there's a new Team17 game coming out, or just after coming out, there's always lots more non-regular forumers around.

As for myself, well, I always seem to be disliked by a lot of the forumers that came before me, it's not a new thing at all, but I never seem to really bother any regulars that came after me. It's just the strangest thing...

Over five and a half years of forum membership says:

We're at a pretty low ebb here, guys. There have been moments when things have been worse, the most obvious being before the announcement of the Worms Armageddon beta patches, when the cynicism was as thick as cheese. And there was the era of "name". But far worse, no.

I guess I'm to blame in part, when I decided to stop writing the Forum FAQ. We no longer had a standard to train newbies to, and so only a few newbies actually became oldbies. The rest existed in a sort of awkward limbo where they never quite grasped the finer details of being an oldbie, but still felt they had the experience to be called as such (Experience is handy, don't get me wrong, but true skill = experience plus technique). Then, with them entrenched, a new wave of newbies arrived, going through the same process and looking up to those in limbo, because from their point of view, they were oldbies.

And then the process repeated itself three or four times.

Okay, so maybe I shouldn't be so cynical. Hell, maybe I should count myself among the legions in limbo. But I don't feel that way. I may not have been the model poster when I started out - my initial volume of posts was really rather crazy, I made some mistakes, and I irritated a few people - but I learnt, I did my best to slot into a role, and I always looked to improve.

As for myself, well, I always seem to be disliked by a lot of the forumers that came before me, it's not a new thing at all, but I never seem to really bother any regulars that came after me. It's just the strangest thing...Well, let's see if I can pin it down:

You're too bloody egotistical. Now, I'm not exactly a humble guy myself, but you take it to a ridiculous degree. Self-comparisons with God, an inability to consider the possibility of being wrong, that sort of thing. It's not good. But then, you've never really got posting. Don't get me wrong, you're fairly intelligent, but I've learnt the hard way that intelligence isn't enough on its own (my recent complaints about stupidity aside). Trying to be polite, giving some thought for others, looking to make a positive contribution - that's the spirit of being a good forum poster. I haven't been able to maintain these standards much recently, but at least I can say that I reached them, and I maintained them for as long I could. Following the spirit of the law is important. Following the letter of the law can keep you out of trouble, but it doesn't make people like you. In particular, it means that when you do break the letter of the law, those who enforce it are less likely to let you off. The phrase "cargo cult" is appropriate here. You build the replica airport, but the planes don't land.

I've been here for 5 years as of August 6, by the way. I haven't posted much in a while though, so a lot of you probably think I'm new. Just thought I'd clear that up.

Plasma, you weren't around when the forum was good, so I don't really think you can say. This forum used to be amazing. People would engage in interesting discussions and speculations, rather than posting a baker's dozen of threads speculating about the release date that's already been announced by Spadge himself... The fan art was good back then. people actually TRIED. Now everyone just posts utter rubbish, and the other people who post rubbish as well compliment it a million times before there's even a second image on page 7.

Also avatars. Now we have morons with 5 posts asking for a sigworm of "I'm a worm with a hat and tennis shoes" or something. Back in the day, the only people who had sigworms had creative ones. Not everyone had a fancy avatar. The animated avatar was more a sign of one's skill and awesomeness, because mostly people made their own. And they were clever. (mostly) And not everyone had a hastily put together piece of **** sigworm either. That was more a thing that the regulars did.

Edit2: Wait, Paul, I went back over your FAQ, but I couldn't find anything that the regulars weren't doing...That's why I used the words "cargo cult".

It's the difference between the letter and the spirit of the law. That's the trouble, and that's why I don't feel like rewriting the FAQ. It's the difference between maintaining a dam and trying to repair it after it has burst. Or keeping someone alive and bringing them back from the dead as a zombie.

If I did rewrite it, the first thing I'd do would be to talk about the "spirit of the game", in much the same way as the Laws of Cricket begin. It's a bit different from them, but I'd want to put something like this:

Disclaimer: I've never been a massive fan of hard and fast rules (yes, I did go to Cambridge to do Maths. What's your point?). You can never truly pin down with rules what is good and what is bad, what is smart and what is stupid. So here are a few overarching "spirit of the game" guidelines by which to observe the rules:

1. Don't be a jerk. I will define "being a jerk" as observing the letter of the law, but not the spirit of it. We all know someone like this. Don't be that person. It isn't a good way to live.

2. Don't be a busybody. In contrast, busybodies tell other people off for not obeying the letter of the law when they're keeping to the spirit of it okay. Sometimes not sticking to the letter of the law can work quite well: it can be funny, it can help you make a point, and sometimes it can be just good. So use discretion before calling someone out. This leads to...

3. Rules are made to be broken. Again, it's a letter/spirit thing. If you need to break a rule, and you believe in your heart of hearts that it's the right thing to do, go for it. But also, please don't use this rule as an excuse to be a jerk (see Rule 1).

You're too bloody egotistical. Now, I'm not exactly a humble guy myself, but you take it to a ridiculous degree. Self-comparisons with God, an inability to consider the possibility of being wrong, that sort of thing. It's not good.
Of course, that was bloody obvious! What I was wondering is why only people before me dislike me, but people after don't so much.
My guess is that they just didn't think of me as a newbie, and that I know what I'm really doing.

But then, you've never really got posting.
If I haven't already got posting, it's because nobody really convinced me how I should.
It's not really that I'm trying to be impressive, real life has thought me that's not always a good thing to be; and it's not that I don't know how to follow the spirit of the whole thing (heck, there's no way I'd even be able to start my relationship without that!), but it's that I never really took this as a serious forum at all! I visit other forums for that stuff.
I mean, this isn't a forum built around huge political debates. It's all just threads that are either made for fun, or for a question that can be answered in one or two posts alone. Not to mention that every second thread goes derailed pretty quickly! So I just don't take it seriously, and put on a big act instead, trying to put in as many half-decent wisecracks as I can to keep the forum light-hearted and non-braindead, like some sort of amateur comedian.
Oh, but don't get me wrong! I still stick to that spirit code thing as best I can; and I do try to be serious when I need to (such as, say, this post), but it usually doesn't go too far as most people still think I'm just messing around.

I never really took this as a serious forum at all! I visit other forums for that stuff. Why the hell didn't I see that before? That's what's missing. That's what's gone wrong. Somewhere along the line, too many people stopped caring. The community that grew here in 2002 and 2003 - the house that Nutter and Worm Mad and Spadge and, hell, I built - broke apart as people left and things just went wrong. The end of the FAQs was probably more of a symptom that a cause, now I think about it: I stopped caring because everyone else did.

Building a community like the one we had is tough work. It requires idealists, and is therefore inherently fragile, because no-one remains an idealist forever.

With any luck, FutureWorm might pop along later and show you his Get Well card. It might illustrate what I mean about what we used to have here.

Lol. I'm really sorry but... lol.

Of course, I'm not really defending Plasma by any means. His Saddam posts are a perfect example of what's completely wrong with his posts and what needs to change. Though Team 17 isn't really a 'serious' forum at heart, serious debates DO appear once in a while and you're not supposed to ruin them with intentionally stupid replies. From what I've seen, you've never seriously admitted to having made a mistake or tried to improve. You seem perfectly fine with being the "forum pin cushion", which is why a lot of people find you obnoxious.

Back to the recent "noob invasion"... I don't know a lot about the Team 17 forum's history, since I registered back in September 2003 (if I remember correctly) and I've acted like a total ****wad for a couple of months before my posts started slowly improving. But what I do know is that we've had yearly 'noob invasions' ever since I registered. A lot of incoherent fanboys join whenever a new game is released, people start complaining about the "good old days" and how the forum just started going downhill, some veterans leave because they can't take it anymore and there's a lot of drama. It eventually cools down, the newbies either leave or (in rare cases) improve and become decent posters and the veterans come back. Everything's fine until a new Team 17 game is announced and it starts all over again.

How many people partook? A good number to begin with, then a few, then only a couple... Now it's something you can win if you actually post in it. Because no one else even bothers. Personally, that's fine. If you don't have the time, you don't have the time. So IMO, the FAOTM should be put to a stop. Heck, I kinda hinted towards that with the creation of the Anti - Fanartist of the month thread.
The Awesome thread
- Created to ALSO encourage others to improve their art so that they could join something of a special 'club' of sorts. This way you could take your time on your art, and still be able to show off.
The Fan-Art thread
- Created so that there might actually be something T17 related in that stupid forum for a change. This was going to be a refreshing change from all that retarded, never ending 'sig-worm' and comics trend that was seemingly ENDLESS.

Thats not the only thing I've done. But I've tried... I've really tried to make decent art for this dumb place, but all I get is crap in return! Seriously, it down right ****es me off. I make a thread, try to post decent art, get STUPID COMMENTS. Then, after the stupid comments about my art that are actually on topic, it goes off into this whirlwind of stupid conversations. I thank the people who actually think my art is good in its own way, and at least leave a nice comment that will motivate me more to make more art. But that is probably 2% of the posts that come after whatever I would post. THEN people keep whining and complaining that HK, Splapp, Error, Phillby, Jjar, and few others who once posted art here, don't anymore. "All that's left is sh!t", is basically what your saying. That includes my stuff, that I've done.
Yeah, my more recent stuff isn't the best stuff in the world. But that's really because I've stopped caring about it. Mainly because no one else ever really gave a flying crap about my art.
But still, I'm always feeling left out. And ya know, maybe I'm not good enough after all. But I know I'm not as bad as the rest, yet always seemed to get lumped with them.

Seniors, you could at least swarm around a thread that has GOOD art, and encourage that person. At least THEN better art wouldn't be so rare. That way all the dumb people wouldn't overrun the thread with endless requests of "DRWS ME PLZ>". Even if they would, the better comments would stand out.

The overall main point I'm trying to make at the same time as complaining, is this...
If you haven't really done ANYTHING to try to IMPROVE the SITUATION... YOU DON'T HAVE ANY RIGHT TO COMPLAIN. Everyone seems to enjoy throwing their opinion about how bad this forum SUCKS, but yet really haven't done a damned thing to try to change it! I'm not saying everyone in this thread hasn't done anything to help, but the majority really haven't.

This post might seem egotistical and mean. But screw the rules. I have money.

from what I've seen
yeah, sorry about that, I didn't see your apology post.

@Slick: Whenever a newbie came in and posted some particularly horrible art, I always tried to help them improve. Even back in 2004, when I still made a lot of incoherent posts, I always tried to be constructive. Recently I went as far as to make a 'worm facial expressions' tutorial to help them start off. The thing is, the fanart forum has become quite a lot like Deviantart, which isn't really a compliment.

Fanart isn't about posting your art, being criticized and improving anymore; it's about posting mediocre art and being praised by people who are even less talented than you are (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=33351). All constructive criticism is ignored in favor of comments like "your art is great, please draw me i am a cyborg worm with a dark past that can go super sayian". After all, why pay attention to those mean old critics when you have an entire army of adoring fans telling you how awesome you are and asking for a "squeal" to your latest incoherent MS Paint crapfest? Helping a bad artist on Team 17 is like trying to criticize a 14 year old anime obsessed girl on Deviantart:

You know what, I think you may be right there. I'm sorry if you ever thought I was calling your work garbage. Of course I've never meant that ALL of the work in fanart is bad, I've just been trying to refer to the general state of things. And I'm not just talking about now - I mean even when the artists whom you named were around there were a lot of morons... However, I agree very much with your point, and may have to force myself to venture into that dark lair, wielding the torch of not being afraid to tell people what I honestly think...

I personally don't entirely blame the "idiots" for the decline of the forum, actually. I think another problem is that the good posters are leaving.
Why does fan-art suck? Because a lot of the good artists left. HuntaKilla, Splapp and all of the other "art-gods" went away, and Slick's the only one who's still here. His stuff his awesome, but his art alone simply isn't enough to inspire everyone else to do better (Or to inspire the good artists that there's still any reason to post in fan-art).

And now the forum is beginning to suck because a lot of the good posters are leaving, and they are no longer the majority.
In the "golden years", the forum was full of sensible posts, which made the forum sophisticated, and the n00bs would be so confused by it that they'd go to a less sophisticated forum.

Now all of the good posters are leaving or not posting nearly as much as they used to, and that leads to a flux of n00bs, and that makes even more good posters get fed up and leave. DOMINOES.

I don't think you should be afraid to give constructive criticism on artwork. The artists won't know how to improve if people constantly say "That's amazing" or "That's the best piece of art I've ever seen" when it is quite obvious to any mammal that the art is awful.

They don't tend to improve when we criticize either, they just tend to look dumb-founded over the whole thing and move on. We've had our "criticize everything. everything!" bandwagon and all it did was get people upset.

Personally I prefer to just not comment on art. I understand the point of constructive criticism and that people enjoy feedback on their own, but I'm no professional artist so I can hardly do proper criticism, and I'd rather enjoy (or not enjoy) art in peace instead of having to pick apart every piece I see. Of course I have to if I expect people to do the same for my work, but eventually it becomes a nuisance (one of the reasons I left dA), specially on the Fanart forum where you end up repeating the same points over and over and still nobody seems to listen.

I think anyone who gets offended by the truth has problems. This goes for religious people who don't like evolution, black people who don't like being referred to as such, and artists who can't take criticism.

The only thing that ever puts me of criticising (aside from apathy) is that I never really know if I'm looking at the work of a two-year-old child prodigy or a fifteen-year-old moron.

On the other hand, if I tell them how terrible it is, when frankly they probably need to hear it, I get told off for not being constructive or nice.

I disagree, morons mature in their own time and, aside from the occasional prod in the right direction, nothing you can do will speed them up.
In fact, too much pushing forces the morons to fight back, thus forcing them to justify their positions and making them stronger (as has happened here).
I remember when I joined I would fight the *****ier members, simply because I was a moron and so didnt believe in the warnings of others and didnt take kindly to being shat on all the time.

We tell them to stop being morons and we keep saying it because they keep being morons and we don't want them to stay forever and think they are senior regulars, because this has happened. This causes the lowering-of-standards by letting new members see that they can act however they want and still be just accepted 'how they are' into the community. I know this sounds smug, but you wouldn't go into another country and not try to adapt to their customs at all.

There just used to be much fewer stupid members, seriously. There never used to be people who had entire conversations in threads, regularly used AOL speak, and really a slew of other things that I'm sure you have noticed.

You see the 'what are you listening to now?' thread? Futureworm and I put a ton of effort into that to make it funny and interesting and the only people that got it are the people that have been here forever. Nobody else did. Some people even told us to stop spamming in the thread. This is how people react when we try to do something interesting beyond "r4te the sigwerm" :(

And it really aggravates me how happy you are to see the people that used to make this forum wonderful leave. Really annoys me, in fact. I don't want to say mean things in this thread anymore or to Plasma because people stop taking you seriously after you start doing that, and I want people to listen to what I say. So I am really trying here. It annoys me when you smugly post "Good Riddance :)" to the breakdown of one of the best senior members, and one who is appallingly dedicated to the T17 community in general, and one who has been a great friend for many years, because of the great lowering-of-standards that happened invisibly and the massive influx of accepted stupidity. I have never had to use the 'report post' button before, but recently on posts I've been very tempted to, and I take that as a bad sign. I don't know why I just wrote a bunch of words on a forum, but I hope you're happy.

Yes, a lot of the greater fanartists stopped drawing here, but the forum games were much worse back then! The entire 'group story' was just a disaster that was there for people to try increase their post count!
Agreed, although the forum has been said to have been dying for quite a while now!
In fact, I don't even think I remember hearing anyone say that they were actually in the 'golden age', but that they came just after it.
I recall forum stories being more clever than nowadays...
Also, I am from the golden age, which was pretty much before W3D was released. We used to have a lot of great, clever, funny members around, and barely any idiots... Heck I even remember a time where I would think it twice before creating a thread because there was a standard to them... we used to get mostly good threads... Also, T17 staff used to post a lot around this forums, with Kel, Luther, Liquid Silk and Spadge always poking fun at each other... It was just a much more close community.

Now everyone makes threads about whatever stupid thing they are thinking about...

I... I'm not so sure that those newer forumers really are doing anything! Starlover's copped on now, and the other new guys are either not staying for long; or just aren't even understandable, which can only bother you if you decide that not being good at English is offensive.

Hmm... actually, just reading over Pickleworm's post about when he made the "what are you listening to?" thread and how some people said it was just spam, I remembered that what's good in a forum is subjective, at least to an extent. Essentially, it means that you can either try to get the forum the way you want it, calling morons as morons, and disgouraging others from doing things you think are wrong for this forum; or, you can follow Paul's "spirit of the game" as best you can, accept the differences, and let others have their fun too.
(I'm gonna put emphasis on 'to an extent' though)

He is posting inappropriate stuff that is not meant to be seen unless your 18 or older (I'd fit into the catagory of under 18 so it's already bad enough that I've seen it.) I demand that he is banned for a while. Why are people dumb enough to come here to post major spam, this guy is worst then eggi because he's not funny and he is posting very very very bad things. he has spamed threads like the "vending machine" and the "did anyone like the DS version" and much more.

Rather than post in a thread about it, it's best to report it using the Report Post icons beneath the offending post. And the user in question will be permabanned.

Hello everyone.

As you know, I decided I was going to leave. However over the past couple of days I was reminded by many of my fellow veteran regulars just how fantastic this place can be when it works. So I'm back. I've mellowed out a bit and I'm (probably) going to stop verbally attacking people who are Stupid. I'm not going to ignore the idiocy, but at the same time I'm not going to call attention to it.

Instead, I invite and urge those of you who want to restore this forum to its former glory to show everyone else just how great this forum can be, just how fun this community was in its heyday.

Read what other people say before you start typing.
Type in proper sentences, using full words, because "monts" and "u" aren't words, even when used in context.
Just be friendly! Have fun!

I don't think it's possible to recreate the old days of the forum. But I do think it's possible to revive the spirit of that glorious time. And we can do that.

There should be a constructive criticism rule on Fanart, or something like that. The way people are ignoring everyone who's trying to help them improve is just silly.

Fanart was always filled with pink bananas and whatnot (at least since the day I registered), but people used to try and improve. Even WORM_BOY improved a bit before leaving.

Also, people need to learn the difference between having an art style and being a horrible artist. While P.P's comics have a style of their own, "wormdude666's matrix worms gore comic" is simply an incoherent MS Paint crapfest.

Just a small pointer about reporting posts, if there's more than one problematic post in a thread, report the first post and in your report say something like "Posts 23, 25, 27 - 53 and 93 also break the rules" (post numbers are shown opposite the time of the post in a thread), rather than sending 29 separate reports from one thread - it's a LOT easier for the mods to deal with reports in that way.

Though sometimes it might take a longer course of time for improvement. It took me at least a year, but still. It doesn't mean that the artist shouldn't pay attention to the constructive criticism being offered.
You're also right with the some people who have style and those who just plain suck.
But back to the constructive criticism, I think it's a combination between patience and paying attention. Patience from the critiques, and paying attention from the artists.
