View Full Version : Because someone had to say it

Hi guys. Most of you know me. Some of you might even respect me. Basically, I have a general message for all of the people using the T17F's Fanart forum. I'm giving it because everyone else is either too busy or doesn't want to do it. The downside is, I have no actual authority. But hopefully, one of the following will happen:
1. You'll see reason, and go with what I'm saying not because it's me saying it, but because it makes sense.
2. You'll realise that, although I have no authority, certain other people do have authority and they share my views to a large degree.
Okay, here goes:
STOP BEING STUPID
There are no hard and fast rules for not being stupid. Those of you who have what might be called a "stupidity conscience" built into your minds are invited to use it on a case-by-case basis. Those of you who do not have this convenient facility are encouraged to get one as soon as possible, and are advised to leave this forum alone until you have one.
Now there are tolerable limits. There's stupid, and there's silly. Silliness is okay. Without silliness, this would be a very boring place. But a lot of people have crossed the line into "stupid" over the last few months. A lot of the older members' brains are beginning to hurt because of the stupidity. Some of us cope through snide remarks, criticism, surrealism, or even just unexplained laughter. If this has happened to you, think about what you might have done to cause it. Because that's the only way to get a stupidity conscience.
For those wanting to complain that this shouldn't be in fanart, here is a graphical summary of my central theme:

I fully endorse this product and/or service.
I wholeheartedly endorse this product and/or service :p
The mods & admins have been watching the FanArt forum more closely of late and trying to keep on top of things, but we've been fighting a losing battle. Please read this thread: http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=20813 before posting here. We will be reviewing the fanart forum in due course and will keep you posted.
And thanks for posting this thread, Paul :D
Sorry to say Paul, but I don't really think they can comprehend all that. :p
For someone to sit back and question oneself on what there behavior has been like, is very unlikely to happen. Especially for the stupid people here.
I say there should be a LIST of the stupid people put here. The people on the LIST have a choice of either leaving the forum, stop posting, death, being watched, and whatever else might be used against them, UNLESS they stop acting like a moron. You might not know who you are, but we sure as hell do. :p
But I think the main problem with 'stupid' people here is that they are 'trying' to be funny. They are just failing horribly.
But those are just my thoughts...

One of the most annoying things is when people don't even try to speak in proper English when they can.
For example, "shoult aper" is not the correct spelling of "should have appeared".
Yeah, on second thought screw it.
Lets just delete the whole fanart forum.

Wait for the mods to have their chat - we might come up with something slightly less drastic. Only slightly though :p
I suggest that any member that shows signs of stupidity have their posting rights in the Fan Art forum revoked. After a week or so, they can post again. Make this a 3 chance system or something, and on the third chance, Fan Art posting rights do not get returned and / or a forum wide Being Watched status.

It's especially annoying when their browser has a spell-checker.
They just don't like to spend more then 10 seconds writing a post, I guess.

What I don't understand is why this thread contains a picture of John Sweeney.
I support this product with great enthusiasm, I shall reccomend it to all of my friends.
I say this thread should get sticky'ed.
...and for the title to be changed to something more to-the-point to remind people.

How about restricting the ability to post on the fan-art forum if a moderator flags the specified user as a "Stupid". If they behave well in the other forums, they may get their access back.

We have something like that. It's called "banned".

I totally agree with you Paul, but I have to say, I was a stupid one, cured now... Well, not totally cured, but I try not to act stupid anymore. Stupidity can be caused by a different forum, where stupidity is actually normal.
I think a smartness system like on facepunchstudios.com would do the job.

Really, you were more of just a regular noob than stupid. Plain stupid people are those that refuse to learn.

although we do have the problem of people without english as their first language, so we'd have to have a leeway based on their time zone or location.
Even so, the stupid that pierces this community goes deeper than just syntax.
Well, at least it's not all too stupid: trhoughout my entire time on this forum, I have never heard one single person to say they like Paris Hilton.
What about you just ignore those stupid persons?
Don't post in their threads.
Don't answer to their posts.
Don't read their posts.
Maybe that would solve the problem.

Actually, the only place I have demonstrated real genuine stupidity is here. I'd been to other places before here.
I have a good idea - IQ tests at the registering page. :)
When the new ones are denied access because of their stupidity they are sent back home crying with a terrible insult on their intelligence sent to their mail address.
That oughta straighten this place out.

I've always had English as a second language and I sure as hell never spoke like a retard. I might've wrote stuff like "hi ppl how r u?" in my first days but at least I made some sense. If you go to a foreign country without having some grasp of the language, you'd be damn screwed and laughed at for not making any sense. If you want to use English, learn it. If you can't afford to do that, stick to the International forum, that's what it's for. You don't get some golden pass just because "its teh interwebs".

Wow, most of you are TOTALLY missing the point here.
It doesn't matter the age, location, or INTELLIGENCE of a person, to determine whether or not they behave in a "stupid" manner. I've know young people who post better than people nearly twice their age.
Lets take Psyke for example. He's 18-20 years old, or at least I think. I'm sure he could pass the IQ test, if there was one. Really, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on that one. But the way he POSTED and ACTED was completely ANNOYING, which made him come off as a MORON, in effect being STUPID!
He got by all of the suggestions mentioned, but still acted STUPID. I know he has/had the potential to be a intelligent forumer, because he did post stuff worthy of reading a 'few' times. Though they were rare and far in between.
Ok so thats a example of a forumer. Lets do a thread now. I'm going to RANDOMLY select a dumb thread in here...
Ok, this one. : http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=33351
Thankfully it's already been locked. Why is that thread stupid? Well, I'm not knockin' the art in the thread. If it's the best you can do, then it's the best you can do. But the reason that thread is dumb, is because of the 'stupid' posts in it. Such kind of posts that reflect ones IMMENSE ignorance, as well as poor grammar.
"o yea but i dont now its going to be a yes or a no because i have been seen a lot of members who start a art like that and everybody says ''draw me''"
^ What the ***k? I mean really. I shouldn't HAVE to re-read a post 2-3 times to understand what the person is saying. At least use PERIODS or COMMAS.
I could keep going, but just trying to 'dumb this down' for the people who just don't understand, is giving me a head ach.

Slick, I agree. And I MEAN it, I'm not just saying it, but you are right. I completely AGREE with what you said right there.
Complainning about stupidity is stupid. So, follow your own advice, or you know, you can always do the non-stupid thing, that is, ignore stupidity.
About, http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=33351, all I see is a young lad exposing his work, good or bad, and then a group of people trolling and complaining with image macros and other STUPID things. I mean, seriously, his art is retarded, his spelling is bad, but I enjoying looking at that random crap for 10 seconds, and there's guys in that thread who are even following the artist and giving feedback, why some of you felt a need to join in only to cause trouble is beyond STUPID.
I mean, the most stupid post in that thread if probably Iguana's, trying to be funny when he couldn't even realize the image was edited and that's why poninja's explanation seems too obvious.
And so the thread got closed after the elitist artists invaded it, a thread that is totally awesome. I hate you, squars.

I also agree with you here. Besides using periods and commas, I'm thinking full words and not so hurried posts would help too. It's not like anybody's going to know how long it took to write the post, so take some time after finishing to check over it. Sometimes I can barely read the 'msn slang' type writing it's so shortened.

Ignoring stupidity is a matter of patience. But not something that everyone should have to deal with.

Oh, and about that whole 'elitist' crack. Umm... who said anyone in that thread was an elitist? Whats that? You say it's people who you feel are better than you somehow? Well who's fault is that? Oh, that's right, yours. Guess what, nobody here is an elitist. Others may have more respect for certain people. Probably because they aren't stupid. That doesn't make that person an elitist though. And last time I checked, unless there is a reason for it, your allowed to post where you want to. But I guess to some people, it's an "invasion" for more than one respectable member to post in a thread.

Complainning about stupidity is stupid. So, follow your own advice, or you know, you can always do the non-stupid thing, that is, ignore stupidity.I don't think you realise the enormity of the problem here.
Consider someone who has been on this forum, what, five and a half years now. He is notably a patient person. He has tried to teach generation after generation of newcomers the correct way to be a member of the Team 17 Forum. But each new generation seems to be stupider than the previous one, and he doesn't get time to finish teaching the previous one before the new one arrives, and so stupidity accumulates exponentially.
He tries ignoring it. He tries relieving pressure through witty quips and joking with his peers about "dumb n00bs", even though this is against his better nature. But there comes a breaking point with even the most patient poster where he cannot take any more and has to say something or desert a forum he has grown up with for five and a half years.
Stupidity is not a virtue, and it should not be tolerated.

Well, all I can say is that, when I first was here, quite a long time ago, I decided to make a silly thread. It was silly, got probably reported by someone, and deleted before anyone could look at it. It did upset me, but I just realised that it had no point, and/or that anyone would care, and just started a thread since then when I thought it was worthwhile or useful. I even remember some new forumer, that came with low-medium pics, if I remember correctly, and even got under the being watched status, but ended up doing great quality drawings in MS paint, and not watchness worth now... Gardy Loo, it was
Then, I see it now... The fanart forum now has no real artists posting. Just those fantastic threads yakuza loves. I don't care seeing a bit of them... with people even trying to teach them to do it better... But since those people ignore those advices, they don't improve at all... and stay there, posting more of that thing he won't improve... And then, more come, in the same situation. Then, after the ones giving advice notice that nobody will listen, they stop doing so. At the end, nobody likes anything there, they can only see funny crap for 10 seconds... after other 10 seconds... After a full minute, it becomes just annoying, because the good art you expected is now gone.
It's not a IQ test, it's not the age, it's just... the stupidity... Slick defined it quite well.
Righto, I think that's enough time wasted talking about the definition of stupidity. How about we gets down to some practical way of either making the stupid less, well, stupid, or making them post less stupid posts?
