is there even going to be a new patch?

This is the option id like added..

1: if you have your own soundscheme set with your own soundfiles and play online, others can download them like they do with the custom map.

by the way, when i add a real big map that can only be added with the newest patch how come there is all like little red dots for a background?, cant it be chosen in the options or is it like this cos the game cant support it?

if you play someone who uses an old version, then of course you cant play, thus red dots behind there name.

they wont be able to accept the map because the previous version would prevent accepting abnormal map sizes, thus if you started the game, it would desync, so they made it so the start button is grayed out.

i woulnt want to download sound files as that would increase transfer times by like a million times for me -.-

The problem with the sound files is that they're all in WAV format, so would take aaaaages to download. If the game supported MP3 or WMA in the 4.0 patch, it might be possible, but should be optional, and should only download the sound scheme used by teams in the current match.

if anything they need a way to determine if you already have the files, thus you can download them off a website if you want them and the game will use them if it determines if someone else is using it too.

MP3 and WMA are licensed formats, if this feature would be implemented, it would be done using Ogg Vorbis.

That's already implemented. :p

Well, OK, either way, I'd imagine the files would still be quite large (you can't use too much compression because the voices are already not the best quality). Maybe FLAC would be better, that'd make each scheme about 3MB - easily downloaded over a broadband connection. There could be an option to download them or not (for those with 56K etc.).

SilPho

Or just say to everyone "Hey, I'm using [scheme], if you want it go to www.somewormssite.com".

Implementing a sound scheme transfer would probably just be a pain to do, especially if it was to support a new format, frankly I'd rather see work on more pressing features.

franpa

it is? why then if i have the big map pack, must i download files if someone else uses the big map pack too? or are you talking about a non public version?

SilPho

When the host selects a map, if you have a map that has the same name (and I guess size and dimensions too) then it will not need to be downloaded. I assume the game will search your subfolders for it.

KRD

Err, no. Wyvern is talking about soundbanks. And he's right, but it only works for soundbanks.

GoDxWyvern
14 Jul 2007, 18:52
Right, since that was being talked about, I assumed you were referring to that also. :p

If we could download other peoples soundbanks, it would be a pain for dial-up user like me. With an 14.4 kb/s dial up, it should take hours to download somebodys made soundbank. And if this feature would be added, then I hope there will be an on and off option for this.

DragonQ
14 Jul 2007, 19:54
Who still uses 14.4Kbps dial up? Surely everyone can at least get 56Kbps? Well I guess there might be more remote locations in larger countries like the USA...oh well.

Anyway, it would be stupid to make it compulsory, so having dial up wouldn't be a problem.

Marx=)

I am the last human, who uses 14.4. =p

DragonQ
14 Jul 2007, 21:46
lol, how much does that cost? Here in the UK broadband costs the SAME as dial up. Can you not get anything better in your area, or have just never bothered switching?

I wished so much to have multiplayer missions and teamwork schemes, but obviously that's impossible because of WP

he used a small kb, kb = kilobits per second and KB = KiloBytes per second.

2 Megabit broadband is not the same as 2 Megabyte broadband. It's a marketing ploy to confuse the public.

8 bits (b) = 1 byte (B). So 8 Megabit Broadband would have maximum transfer rates of 1 Megabyte per second. 2 Megabit (1/4 of 8 Mb) is supposed to have transfer rates of 1/4 of a Megabyte per second, aka 256KB.

Muzer
16 Jul 2007, 18:45
It is 2MB, supposedly, not 2Mb, though. It even says on the router's setup page "2 megabytes/second". However, the download speed even on a fast server with no traffic doesn't exceed 2Mb/s, so yeah, pretty crap. And the kb instead of KB was just a typo ;)

SilPho
16 Jul 2007, 22:54
Then I guess it's on to their next legal loophole. "We offer speeds of UP TO xxxx as long as you live close enough to the servers or whatever".

I think I read somewhere that a recent 8Mb service could only reach those speeds if you lived on the same road as the service station.

DragonQ
16 Jul 2007, 23:18
You must have read it wrong - Tiscali don't do a 16Mbps service (2MB/s). They do 1Mbps, 2Mbps and 8Mbps. You must have 2Mbps = 256KB/s.

I hate ADSL - you almost never get the quoted speed unless you're next door to an exchance. At my Uni house, we have 8Mbps but only get under 5Mbps. Between 5 people, that's not great. At my permanent home address we have cable and I always get 95% of the quoted speed (10Mbps).

franpa
16 Jul 2007, 23:19
pretty much correct.

there are some services that allow up to 21 megabit.

DragonQ
16 Jul 2007, 23:48
You can get 24Mbps in the UK on some providers (but all lesser known ones) on ADSL2, but again, the speed diminishes a lot with distance. The best consistent speed you can get is 20Mbps cable from Virgin Media (not fully rolled out yet, so some places are still 10Mbps).

Bawb
17 Jul 2007, 13:20
I use a 2Mbps service and get 256kb/s max which makes sense.

DragonQ
17 Jul 2007, 14:37
256KB/s you mean...it's only a small difference but Kb and KB are very different things.

It's amazing how many broadband companies' website designers don't even know the difference between GB and Gb (when quoting quotas for their services).

Hmm... We used to have 512KB/s, so does that mean they actually downgraded us?Also, that means our router is wrong. Will be e-mailing BT and requesting a software upgrade :p

DragonQ

BT? I thought you said you had Tiscali? 512KB/s is 4Mbps.

SilPho

Can anyone actually remember what the patch request was without looking back at the first page? We've strayed a bit from the main topic.

Cheese
17 Jul 2007, 16:39
This topic is about downloading other people's soundbanks before the game.
The biggest problem of this is that downloading large files, like soundbanks, takes time, if you don't have a super-fast upload. So the next logical step is to look if there are enough people who have this super-fast upload, what would make this feature interesting for more people :o

DragonQ
17 Jul 2007, 17:14
Yeah upload speed is the main issue really - a possible way to reduce the time to upload/download is to only send the sound banks that actually get used in the game (around 30% of the sound banks are played so rarely that some people never hear them).

SilPho
17 Jul 2007, 18:26
Ontopic: I still say that if people want to pass on their soundbanks, they should just send them to people.

Offtopic: Don't you wish your broadband was this fast. http://www.virginmedia.com/digital/news/gadget/gadget-story.php?storyid=10323797

if downloads are divided by 6 and everyone downloads a different part from someone then speeds wouldnt be that bad, the 7th (spectater) would just download like normal.

everyone downloads a different part from me, then everyone shares the part they got with everyone else. 7th person just downloads it all from whoever has the fastest upload.

hehe i said it twice, but worded slightly different.

seriously, if new weapons would be added, which won't, becuase of T17, and other stuff, they would be ones that would give a new strategy to the game. A weapon that is just like another is... nothing.

So no chance.
