when i play worms it works for about 15 minutes and all is good, but then the game starts making this horrible pulsing static sound every secondish. It doesnt stop EVER and i have to mute it. Then after the match is over the screen goes dark and nothing happens, the game freezes and i have to reboot. I have a decent computer running windows XP and i have tried a clean install of worms twice. I have also tried it with 2 different patches

yes im using the original disk. I installed worms many years ago and it worked fine, then a couple days ago i found it on my drive and remembered that worms is like the best game ever so i put the disk in so i could play, it was still installed and then the noise happened
Actually I had this problem, hasn't happened for a while though... I wonder if it's related to a scratched disk.

would downloading an .ISO file and then mount it with alcohol 120 instead of using the disk work? cause the disk is pretty old and is in rought shape, nothing major but there are a few scrathes
downloading
Aaaargh!!!!! Nononononononononononono!!!!
If you have the CD, make an iso of it yourself. That way it's legal, provided you don't share it.
lower your audio hardware acceleration till the problem disappears?
turn off ambient music etc, maybe one of the songs is scratched on the disk
the sngs are data, if its a scratched song then you would get a read error music -_- unlike with a CDA

my cd is scratched so making an iso would just give me an image of a scratched disk. Downloading a copy of a game you own is very legal anyways, as long as it for backup purposes, ill try the music thing.

oooh it worked, i turned hardware acceleration to the notch next to off and then disabled ambient music, the noise is gone and it doesnt crash after each match. Thanks guys
keep ambient music on and see if the noise does return... if it doesnt then most likely your audio hardware doesnt like some form of audio acceleration...
Actually, turning off ambient music would have been enough. No need to do anything with HW acceleration.
Maybe update your sound drivers and/or DirectX.
Also check for problems in dxdiag.

why tho? the music is a data file and if scratched say bye bye to the file on the scratched area... CD music is streamed and the whole thing is not required for you to listen to it.

It would. If the disk is scratched, the data may be damaged, and then, it would give an image that contains... damaged data. :p
no not always. Sometimes a scratched cd cannot be read proper at runtime, but an iso is made and the data is reread a few times, sometimes correcting the data.
You can test this with a damaged CD. If it is hevaily damaged you don't have much chance, alcohol and the like will notify you if there were parts that were not copied properly (or could not be read) regardless.
Anyway why doesnt someone give him my released music or the music from the disk which he can replace the damaged wav's if they still don't work?
I had this extremely damaged audio CD, I got an ISO of it and burned it onto another disc... good as new.
all depends on type of scratch or damage. Surface scratches are usually sortable. scratches that wipe away the pitt are certainly not ok;)

well i put the HW acceleration up to full and the problem didnt return so it must be the fact that i disabled the ambient audio that fixed it.

hmmm ok so the worms iso i downloaded finished and i mounted and then enabled ambient audio as well as having the hw accel at full, no problems so i guess it was just coz my disk was scratch

Hmm I wonder...if you own game, which is scratched, are you actually allowed to WareZ the game, wouldnt that be illegal ?
Isn't this the exact same sort of conversation that got trippenz his being watched status?

im 99% certain that's illegal here in Australia.
yes, games tend to not read a disc multiple times if a error occurred... say thanks to the people who invented copy protection for this :)
most cd copying programs let you specify the maximum number of times it tries to read the disc if it encounters an error... this generally solves the problem.

yes its very legal, im big into the whole xbox modding thing and im very aware of gaming and electronic data laws in north america. If you own a game you a legally entitled to download a copy of your game because in the eyes of the law its the same thing as copying it from the cd drive for backup purposes. Same goes for music. You got an album you can legally dl mp3's of the songs and put em on your ipod

There has been al lot of fuzz about this in Europe. Read the news: Downloaden wordt niet strafbaar in hele EU (http://www.nu.nl/news/1016267/52/rss/Downloaden_wordt_niet_strafbaar_in_hele_EU.html)
ok, its in dutch, but the point is: you are allowed to download copyrighted material in the whole European Union. A newly designed law had too many flaws in it, and has been abandoned. So download whatever you can, it's not illegal (at least not in the Netherlands)

That's what I know too.
Downloading isn't technically forbidden anywhere.
Uploading (=providing copyrighted material to others) is illegal.

Uhm really ? Downloading games, music and stuff, isnt illegal ? But then, uploading those games you dl'ed, would be illegal ?

Exactly. That's the way the law is in Europe. In spite of what Stichting BREIN and ASPA or whatever their called say (those ppl really only want to persuade us into believing the opposite, BREIN even lost a lawsuite about this), it's very legal to download music, videos, and other things in the whole European Union. Just don't upload, then you are spreading copyrighted material ;)

Hmm, first I'd heard of that. I'm intrigued though, I'll see if I can look into in a bit more detail.

But it sounds so stupid, think of it, why would stores sell cd's, they could just put sign '' Download yours for free from www.xxxxx.com '' Or they could give stuff just away, there is really no point in that >_>.

Well, it's one big legal gray area.
TTBOMK, the only people sued here in Austria were operators of large fileservers.
Also, ISPs make their business with highspeed broadband connections and they won't put out user data without a court order.

You know, it of course would be a good idea to invest £29.99 in a "Skip/Scratch Doctor" or similar name. Little machine you put the CD in start it, and whoozh! The scratches go. Or you could pay £2.99 and have it sent away to CD Hospital, which I think is at www.cdhospital.com...very useful.
I've had some irrepairible disks repaired there!
EDIT:
Tadaaa!

That won't work with core scratches, If the data is gone it is gone. There is no miracle cure for a Cd damaged at the data level.
