Following Sony's announcement of its new online community software, PS Home, Nintendo has gone on the offensive, deeming the service "an example of Sony's 'Mii-too' approach."
Oh snap. (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=159573)

Also Here's some info on "Playstation home" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network#PlayStation_Home).
During the 2007 Game Developers Conference, Sony announced PlayStation Home, a new community based service for the PlayStation Network, which allows users to create an avatar character for their PlayStation 3 console. This avatar will get their own house, which can be adorned by items players can receive in several achievements. In the future the service will also expand, allowing players to have more sorts of clothing, as well as hold pets. Home will be a Second Life like experience with additional and will allow gamers everywhere to interact in a virtual world. Home will also act as a meeting place of sorts for players who want to play multiplayer games on the PlayStation 3.
Sounds like Habbo or SL in high-def. Hopefully, it'll have pools.

to be honest- it wasn't a new idea when Nintendo did it either...

Which is why I found Nintendo's reply a bit silly.

but not as a "console thingy" it was just for games. I mean, you can see your own "mee" in games like wario ware as a cameo. :p

...that almost sounds like something a Nintendo fan-boy would say, rather than the company itself.
Ugh.

I DO want the ability to do something else with the Miis, Nintendo.

Well, now you can have online popularity contests! Thanks, Nintendo. I can just imagine the "My Shigeru Miyamoto is better than yours" arguments now.

Edit: Don't think I'm bashing Nintendo or anything. In fact, if I were to get any of the new consoles, I'd get a Wii. But really, their online strategy is ridiculous at times.

Is there even the ability to play via WiFi against people you DON'T know? AKA, without friend codes?

Because if they don't, then sooner or later the friends you have registered will stop playing the game and you won't be able to play with anyone. Whereas if you could go against anyone, you'll ALWAYS have a human to go against.

I'm not even sure if there are any Wii WiFi-compatible games out yet.
If it's like the DS WiFi, the friend codes should be merely used to indicate if someone's online or not. And with games like Animal Crossing you can sorta see why friend codes are required. That said they definitely should improve the whole online thing.

*Copy paste from other thread*

I'm sorry, but what the hell is the piont in that Home thing? Really, what? What a total waste of money. If the PS3 is $600 because of extra features like that, then Sony are total idiots.

I'm really starting to hate Sony, they get all the good japanese RPG's on thier console, but then make everything suck and cost a lot. Now I think even more lowly of them.

You can probably tell that I'm not impressed in the slightest by that. In fact, I find it laughable.
But maybe I'm missing something here and mis-understanding...

Yep, 3D Habbo. I swear they're just begging to be raided.

Apparently all this Sony hating started after the Japanese PSP launch. Personally, I learned to stop caring about stuff like that and just enjoy the games. Missing out on stuff like Katamari and Shadow of the Colossus because you dislike Sony is just silly.

Oh no, the problem is I only buy Playstation because it has the best games IMHO

The problem I have is the fact that they're expensive and everybody's PS2 that I know got the same disc-read error that mine did, and had to get a NEW one, like I did.

I mean, Multitaps? What a cunning rip-off idea. The OTHER consoles have 4 controller ports standard

Following Paul's trend, I'm just gonna quote myself, and I don't really care if I make a lot of sense because I'm ill, and outraged about the whole thing anyways:
[22:43] SupSuper: also, reading the PlayStation Home thread, the thing seems more and more like sony ripping off others without anyone noticing
[22:45] Paul.Power: Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Although ripping it off and then claiming super-innovativeness probably is
[22:46] SupSuper: 1. virtual worlds have never been a good thing. i've never seen one single one of those thingies that were any good
[22:47] SupSuper: getting people to spend money and waste time on a virtual thing on their dreams
[22:47] SupSuper: specially when you can even "invite your friends over" to show off your virtual polygons
[22:48] SupSuper: plus 2. game achievments, i'm pretty sure microsoft was the first to come up with that with xbox live
[22:48] SupSuper: also, 3. the whole "inviting your friends over to listen to music with you, show off your achivements..." - what the HELL?!? are they really focusing on some kind of recluded anti-social market?
[22:49] Paul.Power: Lol
[22:49] SupSuper: so no, i can't see a good thing in the whole thing
[22:49] SupSuper: i don't hate sony per-se like most people, but i do hate virtual words per-se

I'm with that. Virtual worlds are just too much. Some kind of simple thing for creating some kind of avatar, or rooms to chat, or simple things, could just be nice... but not as a "create what you could get in real life, but you'll never get, because you'll be playing with a PS3 instead of trying to get it"

About the Wii's thingy. I think that a bit of more simple things could have been added (like a simple profile, or something like that...), along with more customization... like the body :p I mean, you can only modify the face... and body colour, IIRC.

looks like The Sims but with a few extras.

I mean, that's pretty cool and all, and the way they've done it is reasonably interesting, but I got bored with the sims a long time ago, so I really don't see this as anything special. Miis are fine for me. sure, it'd be nice to have a little more to do with them, but it's not something that requires any time devoted to it and it's nice and simple to enjoy, so I like it. this Home thing is just a free copy of the Sims pasted into every PS3. I'm sure lots of people will enjoy it, but to me it's just another ploy by sony to take attention away from gaming and put it all towards media usage. once again, just another useless ploy to get attention that doesn't really do anything.

as for the copying of microsoft and nintendo, I don't see this as a big deal. the home system doesn't actually do anything that's making sales for the Wii or the 360. people just enjoy those things as added features once they already have the systems. I do think it's just another copy of nintendo and microsoft, but at least this time it's a minor one :p

The sims comparason is entirely stupid.

This isn't the sims, it's second life, with all the potential to become just as creepy and wierd.:p

There's no item customization so it probably wouldn't be that bad. Then again, pasting shock pictures all over the place was the only fun thing to do in SL. :p

There's always the possibility of the Wii updates adding stuff to it though.

And I don't really care one way or the other, people can ruin their social lives by becomming machinery obsessed if they want.

Including all of us

what disc read error?

All of my friends (and my) PS2's eventually ended up no longer reading CD's. DVD's were fine, but PS1 games, Half-life, Disgaea, and the demo disc with Yabasic on it, etc., they all stopped working. And I heard it was relatively common. I think it was mainly on the big PS2's, but I still went out and bought a replacement slimline PS2, mainly for Disgaea.

Not happy, and neither were they. Maybe that's a poor excuse for not liking Sony, and I'm sure it was just a genuine mistake, but that's not the only reason I don't like them anymore.

Yeah it is a lot like a HD Second Life. And the fact that even SA has a whole category devoted to SL should be a pretty good reminder of where this will end up.
