Hi

I connect to the net via a wireless connection to a router maintained by my mums partner. The Router is less of a firewall and more like a brickwall.

Anyway For a time i could connect to wormnet on my laptop using the same router etc, no probs, counldnt host but hey most people cant.

No back on my PC, having sold the lappy to lappy heaven ppl, i can logon to wormnet, usually see and enter the channels and even see games waiting players. I cannot however join any game as it just counts out to 0.

Any suggestions on workaround? I used to force my IP as my (static) home IP from the laptop but that doesnt work on the router now.

That's because most people haven't set their firewalls and/or routers correctly.

Perhaps you were unluckily only trying to join games of aforementioned people.

Check out the tutorials on www.nanacide.com/wahelp, especially the ones about ports and portforwarding.
You will need the password for the router to configure it, so you probably need to contact that partner of your mum.

I have some suggestions but I'm not sure which will be most helpful.

For one thing, you won't be able to host on a wireless PC unless you put it in the DMZ (DeMilitarised Zone) which basically puts it outside the firewall.

If the problem on the router is with your IP then I suggest using DragonQ's Auto IP Copier (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=30781). You run that and it copies your external IP into WA and then launches WA by your preferred means (direct or via WormKit). You need to make sure you have "Force IP" checked but you only need to do that once.

Of course, you'll also need to forward to correct ports. The link in Bonz's post can help you there, as can my website (http://vader.wurmz.net) (although nanacide (http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp) is the community's staple help site).

Other than that, my only advice would be to reset your router a "repair" your connection, although since you're online that's probably a stupid suggestion.

It's worth pointing out that if your ports are forwarded correctly that is enough to host even while wireless. I can host and I'm wirelessly connected to my router.

That must be a very crappy wireless router then if you can't properly cofigure it to be secure and act as a server. =P

You could also use a service like www.no-ip.info (http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/free_dynamic_dns.html) which automatically detects your current external IP address and redirects it to a URL of the ***.no-ip.info by installing a small, autostarting tool on your computer.
I use that and it's very useful with dynamic IP addresses too.
With the beta updates the IP address box in WA's options supports extra characters like the hyphen.

The router isnt crappy its actually pretty watertight.

Bonz thanks for the advice. Does anyone happen to know the server address or the server IP for the Wormnet Server(s)

If i get that and i know the ports (80 17011 and 6667) then im tld he will "find time" to sort it out.

Right about all the advice in this thread is directed towards enabling hosting, not fixing your problem. Bad bonz, bad Vader!

If you can't join games, then you can't make outgoing connections on port 17011. It's possible that for some reason only a fixed set of ports is allowed to make outgoing connections on.

So, you'd have to get your outgoing port 17011 (TCP) unblocked. It could be a software firewall, or something regarding the router's configuration.

If you are looking for a server address it might not be the IP of the WormNet servers, it's very possible that it's asking for the IP address of your PC because it will need to know where to forward the connections to (your pc).

Your problem here is that your network IP address may vary every time your computer connects to the network. If you can change the server address to forward to the right IP each time you connect to WormNet it is not a problem, but since you don't have access to these settings you need to set your computer to use a set IP address.

Interesting... now that I think about it my friends could see my external IP but their connections would time out.

Hmmm.

Stop posting misleading advice, people. His problem isn't being unable to host - he can't even join games in the first place.

The reason he asked for the WormNET address is probably to test if he can connect to it manually. W:A WormNET is located at wormnet1.team17.com - however, since Sleeves can already connect to WormNET and see the game list, there is obviously no problem with his connection to WormNET. He is unable to join other people's games - thus, for some reason he can't make outgoing connections on the game port, 17011.
