View Full Version : Trying to make a fangame... or two...

Yahoo!!! I have got Game maker 6 (http://www.gamemaker.nl//)! Finally... I am trying to make a fangame... or maybe two or three (Ok, ok, 3 are too much...:-/ ) and i need some ideas... Only i am making 1 for now:

Worms : Lightsiders vs Darksiders

A game about the famous worms "holy wars"... The dark one is trying to destroy Worms city, and construct his DARK EMPIRE on his ruins... But Basti@n and <Slot free, LOL*> and the rest of the team will defeat him!

*When someone join in... there will be his/her name in there...

Characters:
Ten: 5 Lightsiders and 5 Darksiders (They are the bosses of the last 6 levels, but the sixth one is using Basti@n as character, and is vs the dark one.).

Gameplay:
The idea is beating the first level with a character, then the next one with another... Is supossed to have 16 levels. Per example: The 1st character plays levels 1, 6, 11, and 16. The second one plays levels 2, 7 and 12.

Characters:

<Lightsider 2>
<Lightsider 3>
<Lightsider 4>
<Lightsider 5>

<Darksider 1>
<Darksider 2>
<Darksider 3>
<Darksider 4>
<Darksider 5>

On cut scenes....

Shockdude = Civilian on the city. (The intro)
<Cameo 2> = Police officer that pursues the darksiders. (Cutscene after Level 6)
<Cameo 3> = Civilian running When Worms city is destroyed by the dark one (Cutscene after level 15).

Photo (NEW!):

A screenshot of the very early prototype, 1st level.
29385

Progress: 11%
Last things maked: Prototype levels 1, 2 and 3, Shockdude sprites, "Press Enter" screen, and my own new sprites instead of official edited ones.
Working on: Movement (The worm falls down, going across the floor:eek:, after jumping) and... trying to make a "cutscene".

If anyone haves an idea, please post it... And if someone wants to appear on a game, post too.

NOTE: If you note that im not posting, giving news of the game(s), etc, don't worry, im a bit busy with things of the school, blah, blah, blah, and all these things...

I will join, and I can help you, I've also got GameMaker 6.

Is the game 3D or 2D? Have you GameMaker got FREE or REGISTERED? Can you tell us some more about the storyline?

You do know that Game Maker 7 is coming out in a few days right?

Anyway, what sort of game is it? Is it like a platform game with mouse controlled shooting?

Also, quite a few people have entered these forums and said they'd make a game, and then never finished it.

Finally, Game Maker is easy to use, but it still requires a bit of coding knowledge. Is this the first time you've tried to code anything? Seeing as you're 10 years old I'll assume it is.

I don't want to be discouraging though. Good luck.

The game is 2D obiously, it's my first game.... And it's the free downloadable version...

EDIT: Do you have got Game Maker 6 too, huh? Can you tell me how to make the player jump, move and DO NOT FALL ACROSS THE FLOOR????

I wanna be like Gman!

Platform (without scrolling or mouse shooting :( ).

And then, does anyone want to appear on the game? Simply post what character do you want (Lightsider, Darksider or Cameo) and your character (or better your sigworm).

Do you want to develop computer games without spending countless hours learning how to become a programmer?Help me.... that's the whole damn point just gone isn't it?

Seriously, how can you actually make a game without knowing how to programme or script? Surely learning all you need to know to set up your own rules, variables, loops, whatnot and etc is more than enough to actually programme/script it yourself?

You could easily knock up a 2D game with javascript. Once you mastered Javascript you can bung in some PHP, possibly MYSQL and AJAX and you've even got multiplayer (firewall hassle free!) without having to know anything about writing code.

here's a few suggestions:

) try making the sprites fit together- instead of a pixely floor, smooth worms and a 3d-esque background, try to keep the style consistent, otherwise it can look weird.

) try getting some decent animation- a lot of game maker games I've seen suffer on this. try getting it smooth and fluid, and more than two frames.

) interesting- try making the environments different, and offer weapons andupgrading and things. I don't know- make sure you make the gameplay harder/different or add extra elements, so it doesn't get boring.

felt I'd give you some encouragement.

Well...
You're doomed from the beginning!
I base this on that you think you can make a proper platformer with a complex storyline, when you have no experience in making games whatsoever! Gamemaker is designed to teach you how to make games, getting more advanced each time. It does NOT allow you to make decent games right out of the blue!
If you want my advice, don't bother with this, at least for now. You can go back to it later, if you want. Instead, read through all the tutorials on the gamemaker site.

If you're still determined, then go read the platformer tutorial on the site. It'll set you up for this!

*Looks at Run* Why? WHY THE HELL DID YOU HAVE TO GO AND KILL HIM? Self was awesome, almost like my best friend. Actually more like a pet hotdog, but still. :mad:

Can I be in this game? I want the power to shoot lettuce out of my hands. Thus turning all my enemy's into a sort of salad. Then I shall serve them to hungry French people. I, however, will not toss your salad for you. I'm not like that, but I'm sure Psyke or Plasma would be able to help you out. ;)

I've got GameMaker skills. And yup, the best way to get those Gamemaker skills, is building experimental 'games'. Then, you will understand the logics of gamemaker. :)

I sometimes do simple things with game maker, too, but it's not easy if you start without anything... but, with practice, you can do things. BUT starting from simple. For example, I started to try a game with simple things. Like minigames. Then, try to improve them with small details each time...

Listen to Plasma! He is a expert in game programming, using such advanced programs as GameMaker. In fact, he is arguably the best coder on the forums - even better than the folks at Team17 themselves!

Since B@stian is trying to do it with game maker, and Plasma did quite a proper game I personally tryed some time ago, it's quite of common sense that he helps.

What happens? is it that for just being Plasma you can make fun of him? Well, that's somewhat a bit sad, considering you are not actually trying to help or anything, just flame.

On other topic, if b@astian thinks of the idea, but will never do it, it would be rather pointless...

Reviving your OWN thread isn't a bad thing.

Making your own sprites rather than using other people's is usually a good thing. You may want to work on that "walking" sprite though, the tail looks quite bad to be honest, that and it's tripled in length.....

Talking of making games, I've been working on a Javascript 2D engine recently. Currently collisions between circles are working well, and collisions between other shapes are nearly up to scratch.

You can try making it in that when it's finished if you want.
