View Full Version : Weird bug

When I post an oversized PNG image, not only does it resize it, it turns it into a JPG, which gives crap quality. You can see an example of this in the W...T...F... thread and "Just so you know" in the beta forum (I posted 2 images, on got changed, the other didn't.

That's not a bug, that's a feature.

vBulletin has size restrictions on attachments (both file size and dimensions). Like with avatars, if you post an image that has too many pixels it'll automatically downsize it for your convenience, but it can only save them as a JPEG (hence why some animated avatars also become static).

Best thing to do is to use the [IMG] tags.

Looking at the "Manage attachments" window, the max file size is 100Kb and max dimensions for all images are 468x468 pixels.

Well, it would be nice if it could save it as some other format as the whole JPG format counts as a bug :p. It would be better if it was possible to make a hack to turn them into PNGs or something.

I imagine you'll have to take that up with the vBulletin developers.

If having an image downsize is a problem, why not just host it on Imageshack and make use of the IMG tags? It seems a bit pointless making hacks like that to the attachment system when you could just host the image on another hosting website.

How would that resolve things? That's not really an alternative to attaching a slightly-too-large PNG and having the forum software squash it down to a JPEG, is it? Since the viewer of the image has to download it to their computer, expand the file AND THEN view the image.

Or if you don't want the forum resizing it and turning it into jpeg, then resize it yourself, and save it as png, and make sure the file size is under 100kb. Problem solved!

Or just do what I said initially and use Imageshack/Photobucket to host it and link it here using the good ole' [IMG] code.

Well, that's about double the amount of clicks and a lot more typing.

But otherwise you use valuable Team17 webspace.

Yes I know, I read your post, I was just pointing out another solution.

the person making the post containing the images makes roughly the same number of clicks to do what i suggested if compared with using 3rd party web space.

But what about the person viewing the post? I rarely download zips from forums because its too much effort to unstuff them then find where the file's gone, then delete the original ZIP and the new files from my hard drive.

Plus, zipping stuff does cause minor losses in all files.

Plus, zipping stuff does cause minor losses in all files. Most browsers / archivers have an "Open" option for downloads which does half of that for you:
1. Click link and select "Open"
*Browser downloads it to a temporary folder and opens it for you*
2. Double-click on file in archiver to "Open".
*Archiver extracts it to a temporary folder and opens it for you*
3. View files and close relevant programs when done.
*All files that were opened and thus on temporary folders are cleared on exit*

Not that I'm knocking your opinion, I don't like ZIP attachments much either, I'm just saying. :p

Note: I am also not knocking your post - while it was a very valid post I do have the following comment to make :p

Anyone who leaves "Open/Run after downloaded" turned on by default is just asking for trouble, be it on Mac, Windows or whatever. You download a relatively innocent looking file but it has been disguised and upon running proceeds to do something nasty to your computer.

But it will do exactly the same thing, possibly worse if you forget to delete it afterwards, if you save it and then open it.

When I get a download window, I have a button that says Open and a button that says Save, and I pick. Hurrah for Opera. :)
