I know it's generally not a good idea to get the Trygames version of WWP because you can't play it with people that have the retail CD version of the game, this is how I understand it at least. What I'd like to know is if two people each with the Trygames version can play with eachother online.

the reason I ask this is because my friend is a longhaul truck driver and because of this he's almost never home. If he was to order the game (no retail stores have it where we live) then we wouldn't be able to play together for three to six months. He does, however, have a wireless connection for his laptop so he can download the game right away.

We're not really interested in playing against anyone online besides eachother, we just want to be able to do some gaming together while he's on the road.

also, are there any other problems with the Trygames version that we should be aware of?

The Trymedia version of WWP actually works well, I believe. Since WWP hasn't been updated after the release of the last Trymedia version, people using it can play against anyone who has the game updated properly. It's their version of WA that causes [the most] problems.

Granted, TryGames or whatever they're called are a horrible company, but I think your friend won't be crucified for supporting them. Not now that you've explained his situation.

If, however, there are any other issues with Trymedia WWP, I'm sure someone will speak up in here.

Wait. If I recall correctly, the mission editor and user-made missions don't work in the Trymedia version!

Also, some time in the future, when W:A and WWP are merged, you'll most likely not be able to play online until Trymedia releases their version of the patch.

yeah, but there's no release date on when that patch will be out that merges the two is there? Hasn't it been being worked on since 2004?

also, we can get the physical CD version while we're playing the Trygames version so that when the patch does come out we'll be able to take advantage of it.

Plasma, you say we wouldn't be able to use the mission editor or user made missions. do you know if custom maps are useable for deathmatch games? how about custom graves and sound banks?

True.

I don't have the Trymedia version, so I can't tell.
All I know is the mission editor normally needs a patched version of WWP to install. Maybe the mission editor can't work with the modified executable of the Trymedia version.
I don't know if custom missions can be played at all when the mission editor is not installed.

Maps, graves, flags and speech banks should work fine though.

okay, one more question. I was reading how the trygames download works and it says that you can install the game on more than one computer. Does anyone know if that means I'd be able to have multiple copies of the same download running at the same time on different computers, say for LAN or internet games? I think it said it can be installed up to five times without additional charge.

or do they just allow the game to be used on one computer at a time?

is there something in the game that would stop us from being able to play together using the same download?

I don't want to do something illegal, I'm just trying to find a way for us to play at a price cheaper than $60. and if it would be legal for us to do it this way then the $30 wouldn't look like such an expensive price for such an old game, it would be like buying five CDs this way.

I want to mention, again, that we're not wanting to do anything illegal. so if my interpritation of how trygames works is wrong then we'll find another way to do it.

I have no idea if you can run multiple copies. You should probably wait until someone who owns it already can tell you. Maybe contact their tech support.

But regarding the compatibility with the mission editor, user missions, maps, graves, flags, speechbanks, etc. you could already download the Trymedia version and use the 60 minutes trial period to test it, since it's already the full version.

Edit:
Still, I recommend you order a CD version from the official T17 store (https://secure.team17.com).
They deliver in 14-28 days to the USA and you'll get WWP for $25, or even better, W2+W:A+WWP for $34 (all including tax and shipping).

As far as I know, yes. There is full support for all custom maps, graves and sound banks.
