Or, save yourself £45 and get both competing consoles instead. Context is a good thing.

Seriously? The 360 and the Wii together cost less than one PS3??

Reminds me of when MS released the original XBox - that'll be £499 please. I got mine 2 years later for £99.

Wow, only £425? Well worth it for the same games we've had for the last 5 years, but with better graphics.

Yep. A Wii is £180, and I looked at Argos earlier and they're selling an Xbox 360 "core" for £200. Really you'd want to get a hard disk to go with that, which'd put the total price up to £445 or so, which is twenty quid more than the PS3. But then, there's no reason to assume the prices will stay that high until March.

I just knew you'd say something along those lines sooner or later.

anyway-

I've been saving for a ps3. and I'll probably get one on launch day. then a Wii several months later. I probably won't get 360 because I won't have the money. I think. and Halo 3 is the only one I'm really interested there.

£425? No thanks. Plus most people who want next-gen have got Wii's or 360's by now.

£425 for a console that is the same as the PS2 with better graphics? Sure, I'll shell out half a grand for that.*

*Add the cost of a game onto that. ;)

However, it is tempting to try and buy one to sell on Ebay.

The cost of a game for the PS3 is £50! Additional controllers are £35! So 425 + 50 + 35 = £510

Oh, and if you have an HD-TV then an HD cable will cost another £18.

I can see where you're coming from, mind, this is a computer you're paying for. and computers don't come cheap. I probably might not be able to get one on launch, when rethinking about it, but the cost for the console is only paid once, and when the ps2 was launched, I think the games cost £50 then too. maybe it would be best to just wait a while eh.

I think it qualifies as a good media computer, but not work computer. Manage media and have it sent all over the place..

I personally have no interest in the Wii.. should pick up Zelda for gamecube some day. So if I get a consol it's either a 360 and PS3, but the 360 has a supscription fee on multiplayer, which in the longrun makes it more expensive than the PS3 :p

Heck, if Metal Gear Solid 4 comes to PC, I'm not buying a PS3. Not that I'd expect to do so soon anyway.

Pigbuster

£50 = $98.49

That seems like a lot more than Americans have to pay, but the British are paid in pounds, so they have higher salaries than us, so £50 is like $50

Though I actually just made all of that up.
Is that true at all?
Because it would suck to be a British gamer if you have to work as hard as we do to get $100.

It's pretty much £1 = $2. What a shame games are region encoded.

For example, Call of Duty 3 for PS3 (random game picked) on Amazon.co.uk is £49.99, while on Amazon.com is $56.99 (list price $59.99). With the current exchange rate, you're saving over a tenner if you could import it from the States - probably more than cover delivery.

I thought the PS3 was meant to to be reigon free?

If that was the case importing would definitely be a good idea for PS3 games.

I've heard conflicting data regarding that. We just need to see someone actually test an imported disk to know..

If you're doing that anyway, why not get the far cheaper US PS3 and then region-coded or not you could play imported games?

Most modern TVs can handle NTSC output fine, and with the added bonus of having a few more frames per second.

I set my wii to 60hz when I was at my grandma's on her ancient bedroom TV. It worked 100% fine.

Shut-in.

While I can see where you're coming from, bear in mind that's a PS3 with no games. Buying games means we have even more to spend on other stuff.

I'm not sure which ones exactly I'd get. I think I'd be tempted to mix and match. Maybe the helicopter, a bass guitar, the Wii if possible...

Especially since Mario Cart 64 is now on the virtual console! I've played more hours on that on the N64 than I have played practically any game on any other console I think.

Tell you what, you could strap a fan heater to the bottom of the Wii, paint it black and paper mache a lump on the side and you'd have a PS3 lookalike!

Probably would still be cheaper...

More ontopic, I already have both the 360 and Wii, negating any want to waste money (except for the mini-helicopter! Yay Solo!). Sure, it was slightly more than the PS3, me getting both on their respective release dates, but amazingly not that much more, about £50 tops.

And huzzah for £s. Although it doesn't look as good on 50s-style Cops-and-Robbers money bag, I'll give the $ that.
