It's Melon time!

Just in case anybody cares, a cool list of all of the art in this thread can be found here (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/). If you're just looking for the best stuff, make sure you check out my Deviantart account (http://h2o-melon.deviantart.com/).

I thought I'd put that up so in the unlikely event that this thread becomes huge, people can find all of the parts of the comic and so on in ultra quick time.

Aren't I nice.

Art's a bit basic, but the jokes are great, and that's what really matters in a comic. Good job :)

Now, because it is my art and I'm a bit cheeky, I'll post my Fan Artist of the Month entery here as well, just to beef my thread out a bit. :p

15 day long double post! I should think it's allowed. Serves me right for posting my FAOTM pic here.

Anyway, I didn't realise my maths coursework would take up so much of my time. So this is about a week overdue, but never mind.

Part 2 of my comic (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/comic2.png) (319.06 kB)

As I'm still learning and practising, I've decided to do things slightly differently this time.

First, I drew it twice the size on 2 A4 sheets. That worked well.
I thought I'd add all the text in by computer as my handwriting sucks. The text is nice, but the speech bubbles are horrible. Does anybody know how to make nice speech bubbles? I'm using GIMP.
I added gaps separating the panels. Now it's much clearer.

I'm trying to improve, so any advice is very much appreciated.

Worms should be fatter, and not as tall.
Otherwise, good. Although you probably coulda made better use of views in the first comic.

Melon
1 Feb 2007, 20:04
Fatter and less tall you say?

*Quickly sketches*

What about this?

http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/sketch1.png

I decided to make the head more 'bulbous' while I was at it. I think it's a great improvement already, although I don't think you can really criticise such a simple picture in depth.

Wow that looks much better, although I'm not too keen on how much you've moved his bottom lip in. Looking back at my head now really makes me laugh. I didn't realsie I'd made it so wide at the back. Serves me right for drawing him too quickly.

Thanks a lot for the tips.

It's the moment you've all been waiting for (that'll be you then...)

Comic part 3 (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/comic3.png) (216.01 kB)

I decided to go back to writing text by hand. It doesn't look so out of place then. Alos, I made the speech bubbles have straight talk lines instead of curved ones. Looks better in my opinion.

Any advice on drawing lemmings? I don't know what to do with the arms, and I think it sort of looks bad, but it's the best I can come up. And when he talks it looks like he has a beak. Any suggestions at all?

Liketyspli
6 Feb 2007, 21:58
yay, i like it it's funny, but the worms should be a bit fatter, dunno, just try to draw them a bit fatter and less tall...

About the lemming arms, look at your own arm...

Plasma
6 Feb 2007, 23:15
The problem with your lemmings is that you keep your base shapes too simple. You need to use more complex shapes than what you have.
I mean, when a lemmings hair is at the back of its head instead of the top, you just know that you're doing something wrong!

*cough* (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/18561370/)

I must be doing something right if it's picked up eight faves. Even if the doctor does pin his medical badge behind his right shoulder.

Back to Melon's stuff: all I can say is it's funny, clear and the expressions work well. It's not brilliantly "lifelike" drawing, but it doesn't have to be.

Melon
7 Feb 2007, 16:38
I understand that comics don't have to be well drawn to be funny, but I personally want to improve. I'm drawing these comics because I want to practice and improve, not the other way round. I thought that if people saw something funny, they'd be more inclined to comment. Besides, it's an excuse to draw them in different expressions.

The problem with your lemmings is that you keep your base shapes too simple. You need to use more complex shapes than what you have.
I mean, when a lemmings hair is at the back of its head instead of the top, you just know that you're doing something wrong!

So that's what was wrong with his hair... Call me stupid, but I kept looking at it and thinking "Something's not right here" but couldn't figure out for the life of me what it was. I'll fix that.

I thought this thread was about breasts, I see the actual content is far from the misleading title. I'm calling trading standards, false advertising!

I'm surprised, I thought Slick would be the first to say something like this.

Anyway, I've started my research on how to draw lemmings again, and I've changed the design a bit. I don't have access to a scanner unfortunately, so I've tried to draw it in GIMP instead, but my mouse work sucks. What do you think?

Isn't there a line tool in the gimp?

First make a quick sketch, then make it nice and clean with the line tool. Then delete the sketch layer and voila... if gimp has line tool... I dunno... It probably does.

You hold shift to draw lines. And that's an awesome idea. I try not to do sketches on the computer but that'll help if I need to. I never thought of that.

I liked the comic Melon. Your handwriting by the way, is the coolest I've ever seen.

Melon
12 Feb 2007, 18:57
Y-y-y-you like my handwriting??? I think you are the first person who has ever said that to me!

Mind you, you don't have to read any of my essays. I suppose it looks nice in a comic, but it's not pleasant to read otherwise.

Anyway, no comic this time folks, I've been busy drawing something else, and this time it'll be in colour! I've just scanned it, so it'll be a while yet. I hope to get the next part of the comic out next week.

As for now, tease tease.

Hurrah! Another double post!

Anyway, my picture is finished! I've spent a while on this but I'm really pleased with the result. It's even 1024x768, so you can set it as your desktop background if you really wanted to..... like I have :D

I present you with... Aku vs. Philby!
http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/akuvsphilbythumb.png (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/akuvsphilby.png)
Click on the picture for the full-sized version. (Unless my site is being a pain and won't show it, in which case you'll need to click here (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/akuvsphilby.png)

When I drew this I didn't have a source picture of Aku or Philby to hand, so I may have taken a few creative liberties, but hey, so what?

What do you think?

Liketyspli
13 Feb 2007, 18:14
Good improvements, Philby got 2 right hands.

SuperBlob
13 Feb 2007, 18:19
Nice, but as Plicketysplock said, Philby has 2 right hands. Also, Aku is looking too far down. Apart from that, it's a large improvement from before :)

Melon
13 Feb 2007, 18:37
AAARGH!!! I've just realised! It's not that his hand is the wrong one, it's that it's in an impossible angle! I can't believe I didn't notice that! His hand is upside down! Flipping it in GIMP doesn't work. I worked so hard and I've made such a dumb mistake. I can't go back and change it without starting again! Damn it!!!!!!

Mind you, I think the fists looked wonky anyway. I spent about an hour and a half continually redrawing the hands, and still couldn't get them perfect. But the thumb just doesn't stick out like that.

And I never noticed the eye looking at the wrong part either.

Oh well. Funny how you don't notice these things until you release them to the public eye eh? I'll have to redraw it one day, but I think I'll move on to the next comic part for now. Still, I've learned. I'd be laughing if I didn't feel so gutted. Oh, and LiketySpli(tt), you're comment about using the line tool worked wonders when doing the outlines.

Liketyspli

Either click the thumbnail, or HERE (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/comic4.png) if the picture won't load for some crazy reason.

As you can probably see, I've decided to try colouring it this time. Just don't assume I'll do it for each part, as it takes quite a while. Oh, and I thought I'd try out shorter tails too, as everybody seems to do those tails. And Duran the lemming has a new style based on _Kilburn's drawing.

Finally, I've decided to keep a nice list type thing of all my art HERE (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/) for convenience sake, so you won't need to search through the thread if it get's big.

And I've just realised I didn't put shading in this comic. Ah well, I can't be bothered now.

COMIC COMIC COMIC!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, it's not a continuation of my other one, but rather an unrelated strip. _Kilburn was moaning that nobody had drawn him yet, so this should keep him happy. I also drew Paul.Power because everybody has to draw him, right?

I didn't have very long to draw this as I was busy, so you'll have to excuse some drawing mistakes. I have tried a new method of outlining and colouring the picture though, so any comments on that would be much appreciated.

That means that avatar I worked on for LiketySpli has gone. So I'll post it here so people can see it.

Also, I made this a while ago. I was going to use it myself, but I prefer my melon smashing one, so if anybody wants it feel free to use it.

What? The high quality version of that avatar? That IS the high quality version.

OK that's not strictly true, however, being the fool that I am, I made the avatar and then indexed it with a maximum of 30 colours, then deleted the original file. So, that's the highest quality version that's left. I never checked to see if any colours were actually removed, but I didn't notice any obvious change.

I normally keep the originals of things I make for about a week until I'm certain I won't need them again. This time I didn't, and I won't be remaking it from scratch.

Even so, that avatar there only uses just over 6000 bytes, so if you want any improvements done to it, I'll be happy to do them for you. Unless it's "more quality".

Is this some sort of reference to Lost?

Basically, do you want it so a worm is watching a plane crash onto this large island he is on, or would you prefer maybe a worm sitting on one of those tiny desert islands with the single palm tree, and then a plane hits him?

Also, you do know that the avatar size limit is 10000 bytes right? I'll probably be able to get in 15 frames max, depending on how large I make it. I'll try though.

The M13E is a standard-issue weapon powered by a self-generating plasma battery

Drawing his hand back to front was a mistake, but I agree the arms are too thin.

I think the head's alright, but it's the rest that I still struggle with. He's OK, but could do with some improvements.

I'm beginning to regret making a Lemming character slightly, because I can't draw them. I want to move on with the comic, but don't really want to draw the next part, as it involves drawing Durian in some more awkward poses. I could just skip that part, but I think it's funny enough to include it.

Thanks for the comments and advice, if anybody has any more, there are definately welcome.

Melon
27 Apr 2007, 11:27
Eh? I did use a pencil sharpener, but they got blunt very quickly because they are old and rubbish (and soft) pencils. It was more of a test to see how I could shade with them, but it didn't come out very well by camera.

That, and the worms weren't in a pink colour because I rather strangely don't have one (I mean, what's up with that?) So they had to be red, and it didn't look as good.

I should probably colour them on a smooth, flat surface too.

Anyway, enough of the procrastination. I'd best get a move on with the comic.

His back is actually meant to be hunched. I could try a straight back just to see, in fact I might just do that. Limbs are the main thing I'm really bad at drawing, that's the great thing about worms, they don't have them, and it's the main reason why I draw them over anythnig else. I guess I just need more practice.

Melon's hand in the last panel should be faced the other way. As in you should be seeing the back of the hand.

So it should. I make mistakes in my drawings all the time. Durians hat usually swaps sides, I forgot the belt on the worker, and Melon's hat is back to front in part 4 depending on which side he's facing. God knows how I managed that one.

Now that I think about it, if they were a bit bigger, it might look better...

Possibly, I've struggled a bit with drawing big fat hands, but I'll have another go. The fingers normally end up too short and the hand becomes a funny shape.

Anyway, enough of this. Does anybody remember that "draw Pigbuster" competition a few months back? Well I actually had an entry for it, but never entered it, so instead I used the opportunity to test my colouring with pencils skillz on it. The comic itself wasn't as funny as it should have been, which is why I failed to enter it, but here it is anyway. The backgrounds are a bit rubbish, but I was only testing different types of styles.

Under Your Hat
http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/underyourhatthumb.jpg (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/underyourhat.jpg)

I think the worm style in the first panel isn't bad. In fact, I don't know why I don't just adopt it for my comics. I think there was a reason but I've forgotten it. I've already started work on part 7, so maybe for part 8...

Indeed I had, but with limited internet access, I'm not usually able to do them in advance. You may need to whack the refresh button any time I update my site, it doesn't always show immediately.

Anwho, thanks for all the comments. Some of the expressions do come out a bit wierd, but it's largely in part due to the rather wierd way that I draw them. HOWEVER:
*dramatic pause*
I have changed my style, again, again.

I've realised that it's so much easier to draw things properly if I lighlty draw a small "centre-line" down the direction the worm should be facing, allowing me to correctly draw the position and width of eyes and mouths etc. I should, of course, have done this from the start.

I've got two little drawings here showing what I mean, they're a bit messy, but they are sketches. I've not rubbed anything out so you can see the line.

It's taken AGES, but here it is at long last.

The Final Showdown

http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/finalshowdown1thumb.png Part 1 (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/finalshowdown1.png)

http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/finalshowdown2thumb.png Part 2 (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/finalshowdown2.png)

http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/finalshowdown3thumb.png Part 3 (http://www.kieranmillar.com/art/finalshowdown3.png)

It's an entire comic in one go. I felt it would have more "OOOOMPH!" if I released it all at the same time.

Now, I'm aware it's not shaded, I can't be bothered. I'm also aware that indexing it made the explosions look crappy, but it was either that or 5x the file size. I'm also aware that I've made a few big mistakes, especially in the first part. Finally, I'm aware that Sigma (he's the bad guy, he's from Ground Zero) is supposed to have a big chin, but I couldn't draw it and make it look good at the same time, so I ditched that idea.

Normal service will resume in a while, but I've got stuff to do first.

Oh yeah, comments and criticism appreciated.

One spelling error I noticed: it's "pursue", not "persue".

Other than that, great stuff :)

Haha, wow, I didn't expect that. Great stuff. Thanks. :D

The movie title bit was pretty funny. Man alive, though... I didn't think Sigma was evil enough to conspire with Uwe Boll.

It's only been over a week since I visited last. Hopefully I'll have internet sorted soon so I can be back here full-time again.

Thanks for the comments. I worked pretty hard on trying to make that the best comic I'd done so far. I'll be getting back to the detective comic soon, but I've got some other stuff to get on with first.

Happy Lemming (http://h2o-melon.deviantart.com/art/Happy-Lemming-68925934)

Do you want to tell him or should I?

You'll have to believe me when I say that I tried my best to restore the original colours on this image that were lost through scanning. The black background sort of dissapeared. It looks much better in real life.

Nice picture.
But for a second I thought the Lemming floating down on an umbrella in the background was a Voodoo doll of somesort! ...That would be something to be happy about! Practicing Voodoo on your enemies!

I've decided to get a Deviantart account (http://h2o-melon.deviantart.com/) because eventually I'm going to run out of space on my own site. I'm not moving everything over, just some main stuff. I'm not going to move over the Forum News or detective comics, as I don't think the time and effort has really gone into those pieces to qualify moving them there.

Feel free to comment on stuff.

Anyway, in case anybody cared, the reason I'm so quiet on the art front is because I have 4 assessed problem sheets and an essay due in the next couple of weeks, so I'm a bit busy at the moment.

I got a new graphics tablet today. Huzzah!
I thought I'd have a quick go at drawing something with it, but at the moment it's harder than I thought.

http://h2o-melon.deviantart.com/art/Tablet-Test-1-74037308

This isn't meant to be an eye carressingly beautiful picture, but any criticism is appreciated.
And yes, next time I won't colour over the outlines.

In future I may draw things on paper and scan it in as usual, but then go over it and colour it in with the tablet.

Tip: if you're going to test out a drawing style as such, don't also try test out a colouring style too.
Tip: don't talk about things you know nothing about.

Tablets are good for airbrushing and final touches, but I don't like using them for an outline or rough skeleton.

I find things end up a little out of proportion when I do the whole thing on computer (providing the picture involves legs and feet!)

Well now isn't it a shame that lately all the art I've done in the last few months has been sketches or not that great. Well all that could change today!!!!!

Except it's not going to. Here, have some sketches.

I can't be bothered to cut/paste what I wrote on DeviantArt, so feel free to read it all there. Yes I know that cut/pasting would probably have been less effort than writing out this sentence, but I'm not terribly efficient.
