Hey,

Do any of you lot know any good online racing games?

I'm looking for anything, really. It could be a webgame, a full release, free, expensive, good, bad, whatever. Actually, not bad, just good.

Re-Volt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re-volt)

The only racing game that I have seriously played.
It's about remote controlled cars racing through real-life surroundings (streets, museum, botanical garden, cruise ship, supermarket, ghost town, toy shop).
It has one of the best physics in any racing game I have seen today. It even has one of these cars that can flip over and drive upside down.

It also has weapons like bottle rockets, water ballons, oil slicks similar to Mario Kart or Wacky Wheels.

It has a track editor and 2 multiplayer modes (race & battle tag).

The game's from 1999 but there's still a small but active community around with tons of user levels and user cars made.
You probably find it in the budget bins for ~5$.

On another note, I converted some missing cars from the Dreamcast version to the PC version.

I like the old Need for Speed games like High Stakes and Porsche Unleashed. You know, before it went all crappy street racing. They still have a pretty active online community, even though stupid EA closed the server.

Whats wrong with the new street racing ones? Most wanted was a fun need for speed game. Aside from the bad and cheesy story, it was a good fun game.

Eh...Most Wanted wasn't bad. I liked the fact that it was in daytime. None have been horrible, but really, I've had enough of the hip urban stuff and want to go back to the exotic cars and great tracks of the past games. EA seems to be just milking the franchise, and for me, it's gone downhill since Hot Pursuit 2.

That looks spectacular. I tend to love games in which the player is tiny.

Indeed.
It kind of went under the radar back in the day and Acclaim made the sequel for Playstation only.
This game is the reason why I want to get a Dreamcast; just to play the one additional track (rooftops) properly in the championship, not just as a custom track.

BTW, you can get (a CD rip version of) the game here (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4615).
Probably not legal though, as Acclaim died a few years ago and Throwback Entertainment (http://www.throwbackentertainment.com/games/re-volt/index.html) currently holds the rights for most of Acclaim's games.

To be correct, Acclaim as recently ressurected, but only with the name, not with the rights to the old games.
And all their new games are free from the start. And you can upload your own game creation there. www.acclaim.com
(Now that's a company you need to love.)

I'll download it now, even if I can't play it until I get an intel mac.
Because links like that can go down at any given moment.

Heh, I have Re-Volt on PS1. Great game! I have completed it 100% but it wasn't easy. Some of the time-trials were really hard.

Some interesting choices there...

I think I'm looking for something a little more realistic, though. I loved Re-Volt but I was thinking more... full-size cars, heh. Crashday looks nice, I might have to find that somewhere, but again I think I'd like to try something with a little more realism... you know, racing lines and gear changes and stuff. Same goes for TM; doing massive loops and jumps doesn't strike me as too realistic, hehe. I'm not really sure what I want, I'm just sort of curious really. Y'know?

I mean, I love Mario Kart and even the Need For Speed series and TOCA was fun for realistic driving but I'd like something new or that I've not played.

TintinWorm

Hmm...realistic? Have you tried GTR?

MtlAngelus
23 Dec 2006, 09:07
PS3 plus Motorstorm. Extremely expensive, yeah. Worth it? HELL YEAH!
Altough there's only a japanese version with no online play currently, and a demo, but the american version with online should come out soon. :p

Im getting GTR2 this christmas, looks pretty good and its online, too.

Oh, and I got Re-Volt for free, came with a magazine. Wee!

Liketyspli
23 Dec 2006, 16:48
GTR? I'd go for GTL, thats more fun, but you'll need some good steeringwheel for that, Logitech G25 Racing Wheel... (with clutch and 6-speed and sequential shifting modes.)

You should try Armagetron Advanced. Since this is based on the "Tron" movie, it's mostly lightcycling. AND IT'S FREE!

I would say that it doesnt matter wether the game is realistic or not, the fact that matter is that game is fun, like Mario Kart, or TM :P, its cool to drive on walls and such, I couldnt say NFSC is really realistic either but its cool.
Imagine realistic FPS game, one shot, one kill, whats fun in that

I have most wanted, and i like it. (the story sucks, yes)
I HATE underground,cant-see-anything-as-its-too-dark-and-its-boring
Intense police chases FTW
Boring city scenery FTL

I would have played Hot Pursuit,if it wasnt for not working on mah comp...mabey has something to do with XP.

Hot Pursuit 2 and Porsche Unleashed work on XP. Anything before that needs a patch in order to run.

treu, Crashday is cool. Lots of things to do. But i'd go for Flatout, because the Force Feedback in that game is really cool... well, if you want realistic, go for GTR 2.

FF sucks, it's useless... GET CRASHDAY, they have a sweet online community, cool downloadable cars, tracks and total conversions!

FF doesn't suck it makes the game much more fun, and IIRC racing games are about racing, not about types of cars. like Crashday is just step on it, pedal to the metal. Wich is... pretty stupid. its more about making tracks 'n ****.... poop.

Crashday is not about making tracks! It's about RACING them! And if you just floor it you die. Period

GTR2. It's so fun to play it online. Oh, but be sure to also buy a steering wheel. And get ready for some frustations while learning the game...

Anyone ever heard of an MMORPG/RG (<--Racing game) called Auto Assault?

Not free, and I've never played it before, but it looks great.
(And i've seen you can buy it for £5 in some shops)

Auto Assault isn't really a racing game, it's a car combat MMORPG. Not too great, IMO. But for a mass multiplayer online racing game, Test Drive Unlimited comes out in a couple of months.
