General Wii discussion thread. I'm just in a punny mood right now.

So, my latest paycheque prior to the system's launch has come in, and provided that the stores have more units than there are preorders, I should be able to get one at launch. (I'd put in a preorder, but it turns out they were doing that for one day only.) I was hoping to get Twilight Princess right off the bat too, but I guess I'll have to settle for Wii Sports for a while. :p

Anyone else? What launch titles interest you the most? This can include Virtual Console stuff too.

I would really enjoy getting one as soon as it comes out, but this fun thing called "debt" and it's best friend "bills" like to hang out with me. They steal all my money. :(
I need to get new friends/job. Then I might be able to get it.

I'm going to ask for it for christmas. Give them some time to work the kinks out.
Though that's more of a problem with Sony's products, but it's still a good idea.

Twilight Princess is good, but I'm also immensely attracted to the Metal Slug anthology.

It'll also be nice to finally play SNES games without the guilt that comes with using a ROM.
And I really hope that Jeopardy and Family Feud are included in the virtual console. Probably not, but those are easily my favorite SNES games. Mostly just because Je... err... GnomeMan makes them so hilarious every time.

Look at it this way: if you're lucky, you can hold out until it drops in price at least a little. I was planning to do that myself, actually, and I kind of resent my inability to hold out. :p

Honestly, I don't really have much of a reason to get it right away, being that neither Twilight Princess nor SSBB are going to be launch titles. I'm gonna hang onto what I have for a while -- it's not like I don't have enough games -- and Vader's mention of a red one intrigues me.

Twilight Princess [not] launch title

Beg (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/data/928519.html) pardon (http://wii.ign.com/objects/748/748589.html), sirrah (http://wii.nintendo.com/software_zelda.html)?

Also it's been revealed that the Wii version will feature downloadable content in future. Like extra dungeons or new tools to screw around with. (And plenty of alternate outfits, I'm guessing. Ganondorf in a "Kiss the Cook" apron, anyone?)

Not to mention it'll likely be a while before they start releasing the alternate Wii colours (read: at LEAST something like eight months). I recall back when they promised like six different colours for launch. Then just white and black. Then I'm not sure when that changed, but apparently only white now. Damn them. :p

AndrewTaylor
10 Nov 2006, 18:57
Well, if they're going to cut back on the launch, better they do so in a purely cosmetic way than by delaying the launch indefinitely to subsidise Japan.

Hell, the price of a Wii you could buy the white one at launch and the coloured one when it's released and still have spent less money than you would buying one PS3. ;)

Well, I just called around to all the stores in my area to find out what time they'd be opening on the launch date, and in the process I've found out that they don't have any units left un-preordered anywhere. So I was hearing all about these abundant shipments of the console and stuff, right? Guess how many units there are per store?

Paul.Power
12 Nov 2006, 23:17
Going by those photos, the Wii does not look that much bigger than my external floppy drive, although I imagine that's an optical illusion.

Heck, why don't Nintendo do what Sony did with the PSOne and PSTwo and market a flip-up screen for it? That would make me about four times as likely to buy one (As I've said before, if I do buy a next-gen console, it will be a Wii... but I have no major motivation to buy a next-gen console). I guess it wouldn't work so well with the Wiimote...

EDIT: For some bizarre reason the PS3 reminds me of my grandad's record/tape deck.

They've said from the beginning that the Wii is as small as a few CD cases.

M3ntal
13 Nov 2006, 04:39
Yeah, you can judge it by the size of the slot for the game discs, which are the size of a DVD. The whole unit is about the size of a DVD-ROM drive. There is a stand that it sits in (not in the photos) that adds another inch or so to its height though.

I sent a polite letter to Nintendo recently:
Dear Nintendo.

How are you? I am fine. You are launching the Wii in the States on November 19th, very closely followed by a December 8th launch for the UK. This puts me in somewhat of a bind, as I intend to move to Los Angeles in Marhc of next year. As much as I would love to be involved in the Launch hullubulloo that wull inevitably take place, sadly my money is better spent on immigration forms. And, to be frank, if I bought the console now I would have to buy another one come March when I've moved.

If you don't mind, I'd appreciate it if you could nudge the Wii launch date back by a couple of months. That way I can enjoy the Glowii (see what I did there?) that is a Nintendo home console launch. Do consider it.

Many thanks,
Ben Paddon

PS - If you wanted to send me a Wii for Fwii (see, I did it again!) I would find myself reluctantly accepting it.

Online ad: WE ARE GETTING WIIS THIS FRIDAY
Phone call: THERE'S PRACTICALLY NO CHANCE OF US GETTING ANY THIS FRIDAY, BUT HOPEFULLY SOON

EB: maybe thursday, maybe friday, maybe next week

Toys R Us: not until January

Wal-Mart:  HURRRR WHAT

It's been two days, and I'm going out of my head already. What makes it worse is that all the stores open right when my shift starts, so while I could easily get away with coming in an hour or so late once if I'd chosen to camp out for the system and knew for sure the store would have it, I can't start coming in late multiple times per week trying to check here and there and everywhere for new shipments.

There was an article in the New Yorker that gave me a surprise.

While Nintendo is 3rd in sales, behind Sony and Microsoft, they're actually #1 in profits.
It's pretty much because Sony and Microsoft are both obsessed with being #1 in sales, so they got themselves into a kind of arms race, where both sides continue to slash prices to the point at which they're losing money.

Nintendo just goes in it's own direction, and they aren't obsessed with being #1. As a result, they're actually doing the best out of all 3 companies.
Nintendo has a better business strategy than both Sony and Microsoft.

I think that's heavily weighted by their dedicated fans. I don't think anyone truly believes that Nintendo are rubbish but almost everyone thinks either MS or Sony are rubbish.

AndrewTaylor
4 Dec 2006, 19:24
I think that's true of most things in gaming, though. There are a lot of people who won't even look at the consoles and will just automatically buy the one by their favourite company.

People tend now to look at it more in a "beating the spread" kind of way, I think. The DS and the PSP had roughly equal sales for a while, and that was heralded as a DS voctory because the PSP was supposed to pummel it into the ground. Much the same with the Wii -- the market share it's gained is so much more than what was expected before the new consoles were announced that it's going to be seen as a victory whatever the raw figures say.

Similarly, the original PlayStation came out of nowhere and the fact that it actually broke into the market in the first place probably shifted a lot of units on its own.

I happen to have in my pocket at this moment one of Sony's mobile phones. I bought it because for the price it was by far and away the best thing on the market.

Granted it doesn't ****ing work, but that's by the bye. I support whichever I like best and I trash whichever I consider worst. The PS1 I didn't care for. The PS2 I didn't like at all because it was just the PS1 again -- right down to it's two missing controller ports. The PS3 I loathe with a passion because... well, let's not have The List again.

My only gripe is that I'd be careful about carrying it around without something to protect the screen -- I got a fairly nifty third-party guard thingy for it that also swivels around onto the back while you're playing.
Overall feel: not bad, in fact I'd even go so far as to say pretty goodIronically, I think this is my least favorite part so far. It feels a lot like the classic GBA. In other words, prone to causing cramping of the hands. It's not terrible, but it could be better.
Screen clarity: I'll admit, the DS, particularly on the lower screen, is pathetic by most standards, particularly when this is the alternativeI dunno how you can see the screen as anything other than beautiful. Unless it's all covered in scratches or something or has dead pixels.
Square button: didn't have any use for it, so I dunno how broken it really isIt's bitten me a couple of times. There are a couple of combos in Tekken that are nigh impossible to pull off efficiently (specifically, the ones that require pressing Square multiple times really quickly) and if I'm charging my X-Buster, it's fairly easy to accidentally let off the shot early.
Analogue nub: you're actually meant to somehow use this thing?Yeah, that's taking more than a little getting used to. GTA isn't quite the same on the PSP as it is on the big console.

Edit: Actually, on the GTA front at least, I'm not doing too badly with it. I've more or less gotten the hang of driving, anyway.

How bad is the square-button thing? I've not played a PSP yet, but as far as I'm concerned if the input system is unreliable the entire machine is practically worthless as a result. It's all well and good it being able to run amazing games, but if I can't control them then that's just teasing me.

If it just fails very occasionally then that's probably tolerable, but it would still drive me completely insane whenever it happened: I don't mind losing at games when it's my fault, but when the hardware fails on me I question why I spent so much money on it.

(Perhaps this is why most of the PSPs I see on the train sit on the table with headphones plugged into them and almost never get touched.)

I agree that the PSP controlls can be bad, in some games. Guilty Gear XX #Reloaded and no doubt Tekken, all fighters that require high speed button mashing is tough. But most games arn't like that and work nicely, like the racing and puzzle games.

But like all consoles, practice will make any controller nice after a while.
