View Full Version : Team 17 emoticons/smilies

I had a little idea after looking at sel (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=527580&postcount=699) and wormthingy (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=538689&postcount=714) posts in this (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5114&page=24) thread

Now, that we have the IMG code, its possible to do our own team 17 related smilies and post them in any thread without problems. It would be simple. Just submit them in this thread with the code (adding two X, one in the first and one in the last tag). Then, for using them, you just need to copy the code and remove both X in the first and last tags. I will try to have this post updated with the all IMGtag codes for every posted smilie.

Example:

NOTE: You need to remove both "X" in the tags for using the image.

It's complicated enough to refrain me from using it... although it would be a good idea if we had some sort of link to an emoticon window at every thread... like dA or something...

yeah, if there was a window we could pull up with the smilies this would be a great plan, but as it is I'd have to continuously come back to this thread over and over and over again just to get the code for those smilies. just isnt' practical.

Well, its not completely necessary to come over this thread to look for the smilies. Someone can create a document (html, doc) with the whole list. You just need to download it and use it when you need. Or, even a better option, do the list with flash. Or just leave this thread open in a different window =).

This is the CLOSEST that we can go for having a wide and public list of smilies. So, its a good idea to start filling it ;) .

granted, if someone comes up with a decent idea of how to make a flash that serves a good purpose for this then hey, I'm all for it.

I sincerely can't see a good solution that doesn't involve changing the forum code. It wouldn't have to be anything absurd, including a new link would work.

Apart from that, i wouldn't bother myself to let another window open just for this... i'd likely express myself with text.

Just my opinion... :)

You could just add a toolbar bookmark to this thread and have it open in a new window or sidebar.

I do that for a few things if I need some sort of reference while I'm doing something else.

Building on that, we could have the weapons panel pop up so we could choose from a range of weapons and smilies. Maybe use worm sprites for the different emotions?

You know what?

I've never found myself with my cursor floating over the smilies on the reply page thinking 'Gee I wish these were worm shaped.'

The emotocons on this forum are great. They're simple, minamalistic and nifty. This thread seems like a complicated attempt to make the forum uglyier and more cluttered.

The worm shape its not necessary. There are lots of emoticons over internet that are small and usefull. The worm shape its an option, but not a need.
The emotocons on this forum are great. They're simple, minamalistic and nifty.
I must agree with that. With the smilies that this forum gives, you can do a lot of expressions in a simple way. However, sometimes it would be nice to show a smilie doing an action instead of writing it...
This thread seems like a complicated attempt to make the forum uglyier and more cluttered.
No. Most smilies that can be used in the forum dont destroy it. It would happen, only if we use the incorrect ones (like the emoticons that are bigger than the letters or smilies that are badly drawn or animated) or if the people start to spam with them. Actually, how you can see in the other post in this thread, most people wouldn't use them because its complicated or takes some extra time. So, the extra smilies would be rarely used. Its better to have a list showing the smilies that are the best for this forum to see people posting the first thing that they find over internet.

The only safe way to have more smilies without destroying the forum visual identity in the process would be to add more smilies officially. Maybe even a new smilie set with a bunch of new smilies that look alike.

I think that isn't that hard to implement. If someone came out with a good copyright free set of new discreet and good looking smilies, it could, perhaps, be added by some administrator in the long term... :P

ps: The most annoying thing is that :P isn't recognized as a smilie... only :p... that really bugs me... ><'

That's fairly simple to resolve with a decent Regular Expression that catches only the :P with spaces around... it's stupidly simple. :p

Although the perfectly round head looks kinda odd with the wormish eyes. A more wormish shaped head would look perfect. :)

But the main problem resides in getting an administrator to make the change... if one is willing to do so, then the smilies would be merely a detail. :)

Personally, I think the default ones are ugly and overcrowded; there's not enough white-space within each smiley.

It is statements like this which have made me punch people in their (smug) faces.there's nothing wrong with them, honestly. to me, they just lack the charm that smileys normally have. they just don't seem to truly be smilies to me, and there's really no reason why.

as for the worm-shaped ones, I just think the head is awkwardly shaped. doesn't look quite like a worm to me. I think the head's just a bit wide or something, which throws off the wormishness to me.

I kinda like how they're tiny and simplistic.
Emoticons are meant to give meaning to a sentence that the words can't convey by themselves. They're only meant to display an emotion and add to the words. They shouldn't take over the sentence entirely, and in that case, the current, small, subtle emotes do just fine.

This is why certain DA emoticons are ADOHRABAHLZ, but unnecessary, since the emotion can usually be displayed as words (Though sometimes during especially distressing situations it can be hard to find the right words to say, and in that case an emote is appropriate).

The only emotes I generally use are :p , , and occasionally :D because they show emotions (Jest, Sarcasm and Amusement) that words can't always display on their own.

I'm sick of people making emoticons to represent everything and then some. Emoticons are, like the name says, meant to represent emotions that you can't do online. They're not meant of being either long animated GIFs or every possible action that you could just write like *so* or pointlessly huge and detailed so they become annoying and get in the way.

If you want to use your own smileys with IMG, nobody's stopping you. If somebody else wants to use them, they can just copy the image url and use it too. Enough with all the standardizing. :p

And the amount of emoticons dA has is obscene! I always had a hard time looking up how to add one of them.

Same here

Although i don't quite agree with your position towards these emoticons. I agree that they shouldn't be huge and cover every little action possibility, but at least to me, this forum lack some important emoticons that would help expressing ourselves.

Plus, since it's the T17 forum, i think it deserves a little more care... with custom emoticons. These ones are rather small to express stuff properly. I wouldn't mind if they were the same size as the decent (not those huge and missplaced ones, i'm talking about those ones that follow a patern) smilies we see on dA, since it's the size adopted by pratically every single forum on the internet.

Pigbuster

I like being different.

If all the smilies had a fight, everyone else would get in a brawl, but ours would sneak past them since they're so small.
Then they'd go have a party and drink beer and laugh at all of the stupid big lugs. :p
