View Full Version : Dwarf Fortress: Let's mine, build, carve, eat, train, and breathe rock

Picture NetHack, only in the form of an RTS. Lost yet? Good. Here we go.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df1.png

We start off with seven dwarves, but will eventually get more as immigrants. (One of these days I need to start a game and change all their names to those from Snow White and then make up more as they come along like Cokey, Twitchy, Sleazy...) On the right is about one-third of the list of possible skills made available for you to start your crew off with. They each deduct points from your general store (the points are also used to buy starting food and equipment and animals). Since it's possible to reassign dwarves to new tasks at any time, and they develop as they learn, I'm just assigning a couple novice miners, carpenter, mason, and a fisherman to start with.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df2.png

This looks like a nice place to set up camp.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df3.png

Etestlegaslakahoodunnit? what

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df4.png

And here we are. All that green stuff off to the left is grass, further left is the river, the mountain to the right (within which we begin our awesomest subterranean lair), and us hanging around in the middle. See if you can pick out the dogs, cats, mules, wagons and trees on your own.

Now to add the little personal touch that makes the game so much fun to post as a forum story.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df5.png

Hell yes. I automatically gave dibs to Zeor and Pikkul because I'm just unfair like that. If you're not in here, we should get more than enough immigrants next spring and you'll be slapped onto the roster then. That is of course assuming we get through our first winter without starving to death or getting prematurely assaulted by lizardmen or goblins.

Designating the areas to be dug out. For simplicity you can just dig out a crude little hovel and stuff some beds in there to assemble a barracks of sorts, but then it's a hassle to shift things around when your dwarves start complaining about not having proper rooms. (Since the game is still an alpha, lots of features have yet to be implemented, including re-walling.) Also selected a few trees to be hacked up, as well as the wagons since they're only of any use to us as scrap now.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df7.png

Well jeez THAT didn't take long.

Update:

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df8.png

There may not be any fish left in the river already, but one of our cats is going NUTS slaughtering turtles and dragging them out of the pond.

Damn. Those things rotted in less than half a day. So much for getting any use out of them.

Maybe I'll still find some use for the shells, though.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df10.png

Wow, it usually takes considerably longer to start hitting on any ores. bonz is off to a good start.

That's also the kitchen and food storage area under construction above. The area to be dug out below will be where the workshops are set up. Cyclaws set up a temporary carpenter shop just outside so we'd be certain to have the beds ready for whenever everybody starts feeling sleepy -- they're all set up now. The rooms still have to have doors placed on them to be considered as actual rooms, though, so as far as everyone is concerned it's still a barracks. Just a really neatly arranged one.

I have just made the discovery that it is necessary to do a total game inventory search to get the option of bringing any wines or ales with you when you start out, and I neglected to do that, which is not very good. If dwarves don't get their ale, their mood goes steadily downhill until they won't work, and possibly flip out and start killing one another. Fortunately, with a Still set up in the kitchen, I can set one of you jack-of-all-traders (Cisken or wormthingy) to work brewing up the plump helmets (mushrooms) that I did think of stocking up on.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df11.png

Sorry Zeor.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df12.png

Cyclaws makes a couple booze barrels, Cisken sets to work manufacturing the sweet life-giving Dwarven nectar.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df13.png

Folks getting sleepy, good thing those beds were set up.

Pikkul working tirelessly into the night because he just doesn't believe in giving up (kinda hard to see Fisherdwarves, since they get assigned a navy blue identical to that of the water they're always found standing by).

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df15.png

Looks like that cat's a troublemaker, he got into the food stores while everyone's asleep and left a stack of plump helmets lying on the ground.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df16.png

And then crawled into bed with his pet dwarf after chasing some flies around outside and rolling in the rotting turtle corpse remains.

Okay uhh apparently either Pikkul is 'servicing' Cisken as he makes booze (as it turns out Pikkul is a female dwarf), or he doesn't want any of that lame-ass stuff that's already in the barrels and is sucking it out of the Still as it is manufactured.

Umm... what's the best way to get started?
And how the heck do I build stuff?

http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page Go nuts. A few quick tips though:

* When you start off the interface will be fairly intrusive -- hit Tab until you've got the hotkeys listed on the right, but have the (rather useless) area map disabled.
* Build menu is accessed with B, stuff like the masonry and kitchen are under Workshops (w).
* To mine, you hit D and make sure "mine" is selected, then hit Enter once at the starting point and again at the end point. It's not a matter of click-move-click-move-click-move, you can simply excavate in nice rectangular or linear shapes.
* The first two things you'll need to build are a mason's workshop and carpenter's workshop. Build as much stuff out of stone as you possibly can, as wood is a very precious and limited resource.
* If you do not have any dwarf with the skill you need to accomplish something, hit V, move the X over them, then hit P, and L. On that list you can select which duties that dwarf will and will not attend to. Switching around tasks to get your dwarves to do specific stuff is mandatory over the first year. Later on the micromanagement diminishes somewhat.

It does take a couple days to really get the hang of.

Liketyspli making the place livable again.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df41.png

Zeor and bonz hollowing out a graveyard. I'm not positive if the cats or any other pets count as buryable, but if they are it's better than leaving their remains on that refuse pile outside. We'll also need coffins -- Liketyspli is seeing to that.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df42.png

Someone finally gets back around to setting up the farm mechanisms. It's explained in detail in the wiki, but to summarize, I need to build a floodgate, a short channel to ensure no bugs prevent the water from flowing through, a lever (in a room set OUTSIDE of the farm space), then a second floodgate, and to link the lever up to each floodgate -- for each connection, two mechanisms are required.

Right now Liketyspli keeps trying to bring some water to Cisken, but cancelling the task because we have no free buckets. Cyclaws gets on that as soon as he's finished with the first farming mechanism linkup.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df43.png

Bucket is ready, Liketyspli takes it, and runs straight past the room with the designated well all the way to the underground river to fill it up. Moron.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df44.png

Cisken takes his fill, Liketyspli returns the bucket.

Pikkul, meanwhile, dabs away a few spots of blood outside before returning to fishing before he's gotten anywhere with it. He's freaking obsessed.

MonkeyforaHead
21 Oct 2006, 22:52
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df45.png

Obsessiveness pays off, I suppose. Of course now he's only going to fish every last thing dry that much faster.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df46anvil.png

Our first immigrant. This guy always comes by early, and with an anvil, since there's no other way you can get an anvil unless you get lucky trading. (Anvils are required to smith metals, and metals are required to smith anvils.) So I'd better make dang sure that anvil is well taken care of. Oh, and make an extra bed for this fellow.

Cyclaws seems to have calmed down to "fine" status, despite the cats decaying before the coffins could be set up. Cisken is still bedridden with substantial wounds to his right hand and left upper leg, though his torso has healed.

This I failed to notice earlier however:

Edit:

Major tip: cooking them cooks the whole thing, so there are no leftovers. Brewing them leaves the seeds behind, which can then be replanted when you get a farm set up. Once you've got a nice stockpile of them, you should be able to cook and brew plenty without worrying about running out except maybe in the winter. Also note that you can re-cook booze items into food items. It's actually very common to have biscuits made out of BEER and BEER.

That's the second wave. The first wave comes in Autumn.

And a quote from the Wiki:
What makes the winter so taxing?

* You cannot fish outside, nor farm for food.
* Dwarves get hungry faster in Winter.
* A wave of 8-12 immigrant dwarves may arrive just before Winter begins. Your game may end in 19 dwarves starving to death, or killing each other in berserk rages.
* By now you will need to keep your dwarves happy.

Well this is my second game, and I've monitored two games on the SA forums, and besides the lone metalsmith showing up with that anvil, nobody's gotten any immigrants before the second spring. Must be fairly rare to get them in autumn, I'm guessing.

Update: Those dickheads. All we got for about 20 pieces of crafts was 5 pieces of meat. Let's hope the farm produces something before winter.

I'm not entirely sure where those snakemen sprang from; it could've been the river, or it could've been the well. All things considered the river seems more likely, so I've got some cage traps (green ^'s) being set up as defense against a potential future assault. The farm is coming along, but if those seeds don't sprout before winter they die and we're all screwed.

Edit:

This probably isn't good. I only hope they don't come after us when they're done chasing the departing caravans.

Figures, the whole thing has just resulted in the whole herd moving closer, and they're inching gradually forwards. I've locked all our animals inside as a precaution, and they seem to have taken to milling around the dining room.

Meanwhile the farm is actually producing a few plump helmets. I added Zeor to the team so we'd be as efficient as possible.

Edit: I briefly saw a puddle of "rotten water" on the floor just outside of Cisken's room and Cyclaws running back to the river with the bucket to refill it. So either Cyclaws somehow spilled it just outside the door, or Cisken went berzerk and smacked it out of his hands.

Heh, and right after I put up that picture too.
And I didn't think snakemen could come from wells.
The best thing to do if you get attacked by things from the river is to attack them while they're all grouped together in one corridor. That way, there's a much higher chance of them fleeing back into the river if you kill one of them.

Ok then:
Dwarf fortress is a game.
MFAH is playing this game, and gave forumer's nicknames to his dwarves.
All those pictures are screenshots of the game, but you won't understand them properly until you spend two or three days playing the game yourself.
MFAH tells the story of his game in progress in a way that's easy to understand.

Also:
Miasma are those purple blocks, and they make all dwarves that walk through it annoyed.
Anything with a red square around it is dead.
Elephants are painful, and represented by an E.

The cool thing about it is that in this case it's actually feasible. Just rename a bunch of characters at random and see how things play out. Of course, there's still the danger of me losing interest in the project, but things are staying pretty interesting. Winter will be hell, though. Maybe I'll dig out a bunch of other stuff to pass the time.

Edit: One thing I forgot to mention because I just dove in headfirst, to those of you who aren't playing, is that before you can actually play anything in the game, you need to generate a world, which can take anywhere from about 15 minutes to an hour or two because of the complexity involved. But when that world is generated, it literally creates its own unique history, which you can discover in adventure mode by talking to certain people, and as you play the game more and more, the years pass, permanently, and all the stuff you do has a permanent effect. Fortresses you build will remain etched into the mountains, the corpses of monsters you have slain will remain where you laid them to rest, and if you manage to have one of your adventure mode characters make it to retirement, you may run into him in subsequent runs. The only downside is that you can't have a fortress mode save and adventure mode save at the same time at present.

Plasma

No, you can if you make a second world. But then you don't get to pop a visit to your old fortress and beat up the occupying monsters.

Oh, and in winter you'll have a lot of time in which dwarfs aren't doing anything. use this time to build up your storages and door constructions. And make extra beds for the future.

The elephants have wandered off, but our next test is upon us. Hopefully Cisken will die of hunger so we don't have to waste any extra grub on him. :p

We have a reasonable population of dogs now, though.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df64.png

Better reassign Pikkul to fishing. The outdoor river and ponds apparently freeze over during the winter or something, but the underground cave remains functional.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df65.png

Zeor draws his pick and resumes work alongside bonz, hollowing out some extra rooms in preparation for spring. We may all be dead by then, but hey, why not.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df66.png

Kennels. Now whenever wormthingy gets some spare time, he'll work on training our cute little puppies into ferocious war dogs. Hey, we could use the protection, as evidenced by Cisken.

Speaking of Cisken...

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df67.png

His mood has remained in a steady state of decline, so Zeor, in a fit of compassion, sets up our most finely-crafted statue in his room to give him something to occupy his mind with.

Well, I tried installing the new release and continuing, but it had the side effect of patching up Cisken's wounds while leaving him mentally deranged. Granted, that would have been convenient, but hardly fair. :p I did play for a while in that state just to see what would result.

Cisken ran into the kitchen area and slammed into the fishery repeatedly, went and blocked the dining room doorway deliberately, returned to his room and screamed at the statue, went back to the dining room, chucked some stones around, returned to where his clothes were and stared at his pants for a few hours, went back into the dining room again, and started jumping around naked and babbling incoherently next to Liketyspli, causing Liketyspli to get up and leave the room in the middle of a meal of turtle. Then he began molesting the remainder of the meal, knocked it onto the floor, hopped on the table and jumped around, scurried to the far end of the table where Zeor was sitting, jumped around and screeched in Zeor's face (eliciting no reaction whatsoever), then ran outside and dove into a pond and swam around for a while.

I tried setting up some cage traps to catch him, but it seems they only catch "tantruming" dwarves, as opposed to those who have gone stark raving mad and are just running around making a nuisance of themselves. Then I reverted to the previous build and restored the save.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df74.png

wormthingy has trained a couple war dogs now and they're following him around despite not actually being his pets (including sleeping in the same room), while Cisken is crawling around in the rain outside next to the refuse pile. You know, same old.

Edit: He's starving, stunned, dehydrated, exhausted, and miserable. I don't think he's going to last much longer.

Update:

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df75.png

Not one day of acclimatizing to his new habitat and Iguana has already attempted to wrestle an elephant. Why I'm surprised I do not know.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df94.png

'Satisfying acquisition'? Maybe he tore off the elephant's tusk and has it stashed away somewhere. Then again maybe he just enjoys having a room with a statue (the same one Cisken went crazy in, but he doesn't seem to care). Not pictured: FutureWorm lugging a bucket of water over for him.

Starting to construct a road for the human caravans. No way we'll have it done in time for them this year, but it'll have to be done sometime. Those elephants are getting dangerously close again though.

And nope, it's because you've been recruited into a squad along with KB and WeXzuZ. I've only just figured out how to get you to start sparring with one another, and as we don't have any metal armor yet, I think I'll have you train unarmed. We've already had two casualties (well, one pending), don't need our remaining forces dismembering one another by accident.

Our Hero, Fluffles Steppehelm, sets out on a fabulous quest for... The Cups-Council of Flinging. It's much too difficult a quest for him to face alone... he's going to need a GROUP OF DARING, ADVENTUROUS ADVENTURERS to do all of his fighting for him

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r248/PIKKULJENKINS/4.png
And what a group it is!

From left to right:

"Cisken One" Pobeescu (Wheelink), Drunk
"Zeor" Behalrosha (Kingdomsnake, Lasher
Fluffles Kostersi (Steppehelm), Swordsman
"Munkee" Esdas (Pointedsack), Hammerman
"Paul Power" Gamoono (Gravetowers), Bowman

Will our heroes succeed in killing the giant, or will they be brutally dismembered
and completely forgotten?????

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r248/PIKKULJENKINS/6.png

"Cisken One" rises to her feet at the sheer majesty of the cave. Little does she know she's about to be fighting... for her LIFE!

In a ferocious battle of man verses beast, the Drunk realizes the utter hopelessness and immensity of The Cave. She panics, "We are all going to die!!!" until the beautiful, handsome "Paul Power" rushes to her side, slaying the foul beast.

A minor temporal displacement (small price to pay for managing to restore the save data) means that our mule was not hastily slaughtered on the spot as before -- but the river is running red with the blood of the innocent, so something got injured. Two of the snakemen dive right into our cage traps, but a third manages to sneak through and heads for the bedrooms. Our squad finally begins to spring into action, and KamikazeBananze hones in on the escapee as he makes his way into Philby's room.

KB isn't quite fast enough however, and before anyone knows quite what's happened, the snakeman has filched all Philby's belongings (including his clothes). KB intercepts him en route back to the river and pummels him senseless with nothing but his bare hands. Pigbuster bursts in through the door and delivers the coup de grace, cleaving the villain neatly in half at the waist... with his bare hands.

Currently taking stock of the aftermath.

Update: I can't find anybody or anything injured, so either one of the snakemen spontaneously combusted in a cloud of gore, or some animal was mortally wounded and immediately washed downstream. Further examination of the halved snakeman revealed a snakeman chunk and snakeman left hand. You guys are hardcore.

Philby still hasn't woken up, and his mule decided to hop in bed with him. That's like the worst "morning after" scenario in existence.

Update again: It seems a cow brought Philby his clothes back. And dressed him. While he's still asleep.

Edit: KB fell asleep on the spot after the battle. Guess ripping a guy apart piece by piece with your bare hands takes some effort.

Guys, we've got a problem. The game's suddenly decided we can't plant any more plump helmets (the option in the farm plot configuration is dark red and can't be selected). It's still autumn, this shouldn't be happening.

Edit: Okay, we ran out of seeds somehow, and it turned winter anyway so no more farming for a while. I now resume my thankless task of attempting to get one of you to brew something whilst keeping the others from hogging every last spare barrel.

Update: I just realized that the snakemen that got caged were still sitting around in said cages. So they were promptly shifted to the currently abandoned farm plots and flooded.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df123.png

...Only, they've been sitting there for a good full day now and haven't drowned. I guess they must be completely amphibious after all.

Update: Managed to get a little wine made, currently attempting to gather enough plants to satisfy the requirements for dye so I can try dyeing some kickass duds for Zeor. The snakemen have remained underwater in their cages for half the winter, so I gave up and restationed them in the zoo.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df124wtf.png

KB's been doing nothing but hanging around one of the snakemen since I repositioned the cages. I haven't seen him-- er, her interacting with anyone else. This is just unreal. If one of those things gets loose one night and slaughters everybody, we'll know who to blame.

Update: We made it to spring, let's celebra--

Oh, seasonal overflow

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df126.png
AAAAAHHH

Edit: Nobody else drowned, though bonz came close. So much for building doors to guard against seasonal flooding.

HELLO

Things are about to get either very interesting, or very ugly.

Edit:

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df128.png

Help.

Update: Lots of mining going on, expanding the dining room and bedroom areas exponentially, one of the nobles has mandated the construction of two helms, our new trappers are SEVERELY RETARDED and will not abandon their original Hunt programming -- as a result one has died before I even got the chance to name him, and another got mauled in the gut trying to recover the first one's corpse and equipment.

Update again: Summer, and more seasonal flooding. Liketyspli got knocked clear off the bridge and halfway downstream, but made a valiant effort to return to dry land. Alas, he got to the square next to the bridge he was washed off of and gave out.

Well, we've apparently got thieves in the area, as I just got notification that 34 crossbow bolts had been stolen from outside. Good thing there's cage traps everywhere.

oh great now you're gonna stab someone in the neck, drag their corpse into your room, and emerge half a season later with a dwarfskin boot

Edit: Even worse, now he's sketching pictures of a quarry, and shining bars of metal. YOU GONNA' GO INSANE, BOY

Update: I tried, but you worthless masons have been loafing around an unnatural amount.

Update: Since we have a broker now, we established a trade agreement when the humans came to pass. The road still wasn't finished so we didn't get their big caravans, but we still got to trade anyway (and everything actually has a designated value too, now). They now have the greatest priority to bring us food and drink, and I also told them to bring some cats next time since we still don't have any since that first snakeman scare.

Edit: Road constructions held up by cougar. Our squad (with the newly introduced Worm Mad, Marksman at the helm) chased it off for now.

Update: Cougar taken down, planning to butcher it for its hide since it's being mandated that we make a couple helms. Meanwhile kikumbob has taken to swimming short laps down the cave river.

THE RIVER GODS ARE ANGRY and have taken our only remaining mule

Update: A dwarven trade caravan showed up, and as they were offloading Pikkul bumped into a kobold thief on the bridge. The caravan's guards took notice and entered berzerker mode.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df135.png

A second thief was careless enough to bump into another guard about two squares from our front door. Mr. Lokum Dumurvad, Axedwarf was not amused (the arrow indicates trajectory of the corpse).

It'll allow your river to rip things up like a regular thing-ripper.

You know why I initially stopped posting? I was waiting for the next build to be released. Screw that, it's not happening anytime soon at this rate.

I think I left a few details out here and there, but I'll attempt to recap. Our new sheriff is AndrewTaylor (who wields a mean axe and has already beaten SuperBlob over something), Nutter is the broker, and I'm the Manager. For some reason, although AT's quarters are the most fanciful of all the nobles so far, they're only turning up as Meager, which is inadequate for his demands.

I just noticed psyke is passed out with a severe injury to the lower torso. No idea where that came from.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h121/Glombus79/df136renew.png
AAARRGGGGG well actually there's not that many of them this time, thankfully.

Not too much happening right now. Training a few war dogs, getting some cooking done. Dumb dwarves still don't make full use of the barrels, which was one of the things to be fixed in the next release.

Munkee's not extremely likely to update this again in the particularly near future because he's created a parallel world and gotten into Adventure mode.

Speaking of which. Remember Alouette, the sole survivor of the great kitten flood of Iddumat? To my sheer thrill and amazement, I actually found her alive and living happily in a completely different fortress while meandering around in adventure mode. I couldn't believe it.

Is this thread also for general discussion now?

I haven't had much luck with adventure mode recently, but this one guy managed to go from a guy with no items or stats to "a legendary wrestler & swordsman, with maximum attributes, wielding an exceptional iron two-handed sword".

I'm also kind of reluctant to get back into fortress mode with all the updates on the horizon.
