I've been playing about with the soundbanks alot recently, and I was wondering if it's possible to change the squeaky noise the worms make [walk-compress/walk-expand] to my own sound.

I've tried renaming my own sounds to walk-compress/walk-expand, adding the files to the soundbank files, but to no avail... Is this a sound that is used directly from the CD itself, or is there a way to get around it..

Check in Game folder\Data\Wav\Effects.

You should find Walking sound effect there.

That works only for you, sorry to say. If you send your soundbanks to people, though, then they can hear it as well.

If you do so, make sure the folder name is exactly the same or it won't work.
If you download speechbanks from the internet, don't change the folder name, as that's the one most people will use.
