"The Wii console from Japanese gaming giant Nintendo will cost under 250 euros (£170) in Europe, according to a senior executive at the company.
The figure is the first time the games giant has given a European price.

Bernd Fakesch, head of German operations at the company, mentioned the figure in an interview at the Leipzig Game Convention in Germany.

In May, the company said the console would cost 25,000 yen or lower in Japan and $250 (£133) or less in the US.

When it is released later this year, the Wii console will compete with Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Microsoft's Xbox 360. No exact date for the Wii's launch has been given."

so....they said it would be under 250 euros....we already KNEW it was going to be under $250, so logically it would HAVE to be less than 250 euros....I fail to see why this announcement got a news article much less a thread here...

That's not an accurate figure.

"The price has not been decided yet, but I expect it to be ... less than 250 euros"

I suspect they'll bump it up to £200. No company ever uses direct currency-conversion to determine prices, and according to something in a magazine I read, every Nintendo console since the NES has been £200 on release.

Seems a bit funny that BBC stated that the Wii would be "competing" with the 360 and PS3, despite the fact that the whole point is to do the opposite. Ho hum.

Well, whatever else it does, it will compete with them for some sales; there's no way around that.

No, not every Nintendo console has been £200. The Gamecube was £180 when it was first released.

It'll probably be twice as much here.

Which is still amazingly cheap.

Compared what 360 and PS3's gonna cost, yes.

isnt the ps3 losing money if the price is under 600 quid. because blueray costs enough as it is along with all of the other hardware they have in there. I just heard rumors that it would be around that price area.

It's supposed to lose money. The Times loses money on each newspaper sold. Xerox lose money on each photocopier sold. Nintendo lose money on each GameCube sold. They do it to create a market in adverts, toner, and games respectively. That's how the business works, but Sony have noticed that idiots will buy their console at any price and opted not to bother with the loss-leader.

They have the price that low so that they won't be totally destroyed.
They will make a loss, but they might make up for it in game sales. A game costs $50+, and it's just a CD.

In fact, if someone really wanted to ruin Sony, they'd just have to buy all of the PS3s they can, but not pay for any games. Sony would have to keep making systems and losing money.

And I don't know if that's all correct, but that's going on what little I know about BUSINESS.

... You do realise that on the first release, Sony'll have 2 million PS3s ready, let alone the others?

In principle, yes, but in practice I'm sure Sony don't operate on the kind of knife-edge where that would make a lot of difference to them.

personally i think the ps3 is a waste of money, with that kind of money you could make a somewhat decent gaming pc. and playing games on the pc are always better because you can use keyboard and mouse or a gamepad.

Firstly, the difference in specs would be quite large actually, secondly, I'm quite sure you'll be able to plug a keyboard and mouse in it in some way, thirdly, I'm also quite sure it'll support a gamepad.
Yes it's expensive, yes PC is better for gaming, no it's not for the reasons you mentioned at all.
Basicly if you want a PC as powerfull as the PS3, it'll cost you more, but it'll be upgradeable and will most likely have more use than a PS3.

Sorry for ressurecting this topic. But this site (http://www.direct4games.com/layout1.jsp?page=prod&prod=267134&source=webgains&siteid=1065) has the price of the Wii as £144.99. It might not be official though but it would be great if it was that price. It also says the release date as November but again this isn't official.

EDIT: It's £169.99 now.
