ok, here it goes.. this is a contest.. for pixel artists!
rules
1) it has to be team 17 related

4) the contest closes when nobody is left to post art...

the prizes: 28385
that'd be all... let the art begin!

Well...doesnt this count as fanart?
Soooooooooooo why wouldnt they just put it in the fanartist of the month thread? That would still work:p

You could just say the Pixel Art Contest and be done with it. :p

Besides StarWorms, Vader...and well, you; It's kinda hard to find pixel artists.

BUT HEY! Don't let me discurage this. Carry on. :p

Assuming we can enter multiple pieces, this is my first entry:

I can't figure out how to embed it in the post as I've already attached it elsewhere :P

I don't really see the point in this - There's a fanartist competition each month anyway and I don't see why pixel art should be singled out.

Although hey, they could be prizes for the ordinary Fanart contest...

I do. Pixel art is a very different art form to most other digital art forms.

I'd feel just as happy to see a 3D fanart sub-category. The three (pixel art, 2D art and 3D art) are very different mediums.

If this was the case and the winner of each was pooled into an overall fanartist of the month award, you'd probably see a pattern of one medium being favoured over another emerge.

From what I've seen only a handful of people submit their work to the monthly competition. A couple of those are joke entries, leaving about 5 as proper entries. Divide that into 3 and well, you get my point.

Vader
14 Aug 2006, 21:19
Yeah, good point.

Still, maybe it will inspire others to try their hand at pixel art. It also gives people more opportunity to win, I guess. They could enter pixel art, 2D art and 3D art in three seperate competitions and potential win all three.

I know I would if I had a 3D modelling application (and there was a seperate 3D competition) ;)

I don't see the harm, really.

i think there should be multiple contest because theres no way to do a fair contest with mixed art.. pixel art, CGI, air brushing, vectors..
how can airbrushing ever beat a good 3d render? or pixels beat vector?

how can airbrushing ever beat a good 3d render? or pixels beat vector?Well, by taking the art form into consideration, I suppose. After all, a photograph is by definition more realistic than even the best piece of airbrushing, but that doesn't make the airbrushing less stunning than the photo.

Because people know what toook most time, hard work and effort. Or atleast I hope the guys on Fan Art arn't so shallow that they can't do that, and just automaticly proclaim polygons better than brush strokes.

its all art, but its not the same. having them all together is a bit like having a chess/football contest, theyre both sports.

and yes, i hope they know that too :)

Exactly, we are way to small for all this planning and categorising.

Anyway, I've started my contribution to the contest. I'll be sure to post what I got before I am overwhelmed and give up ;)

how can airbrushing ever beat a good 3d render? or pixels beat vector?I think you're not really looking at it in the sense that anyone voting in those thread would. everyone knows the mediums are different, and as such they will judge the quality based on what that medium is capable of. if someone posted a decent 3D image and someone else posted an outstanding 2D image, the 3D image would likely LOOK more realistic, but the 2D one would still be better. now, the part I actually agree with the seperation on is pixel art. most of the time pixel art is based on the same scale as any other 2D art is, and that makes people more likely to vote for a vector or airbrushing or whatever else over the pixel art. if we've got the people for it, I'd say go ahead and do a pixel art competition. let this month be the test run and if it works out then keep it up, if it doesn't, then let it drop. no harm done either way.

I drew all the pixels for it individually. That makes it pixel art.

Vader
15 Aug 2006, 16:45
In all fairness, if I was doing it professionally then I would too.

I may start doing so just to get out of the "purist" way of thinking. It's a bit tedious drawing 45 degree lines pixel by pixel.

Xinos

Okay, just wasn't clear on the definition.

For the record, is using layers as well as copypasting areas cheating? =P

Vader
15 Aug 2006, 20:46
Not really.

Some would say it's a bit lazy as you can achieve everything you want just with a broader colour palette and more time/effort. I'd say go for it, as long as you are only drawing pixels on new layers and only copying and pasting pixels you've drawn.

wormthingy

pixel art rule number one:
the line tool, paintbucket, undo, and the layers are your best freinds!
i de everything with it :p.. except for the line tool because stupid gimp doesnt have that :(

The shadow for the plane should be directly below it and the plus signs on the health crates are not straight. It also appers that you have multiple light sources here and it's a bit confusing to the eye.

Other than that it looks great :)

Xinos
16 Aug 2006, 16:26
Alright, the crates and mines could use a larger fall distance on their shadows, I'll fix that later. But what do you mean the crate's and straight up? I'd rather not touch them since it took ages to get the red cross on them looking ok.

I think the horizontal line on the + symbol on the health crates looks wonky and it makes the whole + symbol appear to lean into the crate.
