Which worms game is the best?

The general concensus is Worms Armageddon, although a few around here will swear blind that WWP is. WWP doesnt work on some system setups however, WA is generally fine as long as yuou install the correct patches in the correct order.

That's for 2d worms games. If you like 3d, get Worms 4 Mayhem. If you like 2d, get Worms Armageddon and follow the tutorial on www.nanacide.com/wahelp

Most people prefer WA as the best 2d games, but others would argue that Worms 2 is better because of its option to completely customise every weapon, plus the ability to support a maximum of 8 teams (WA has a max of 6).

I have to say me and everyone else I have talked to about worms think that the 1st games were the best most playable they have made to date. Worms united or reinforcements was my favourite by far.

Well, you must admit that the situation of W:A and WWP, where the older game is still being patched while the newer one is not, is a quite unique situation.

unique maybe, but that doesn't make it any less true...

Well that wouldn't be entirely true, because WWP also has things WA has not.
Myself, I do prefer WWP, mainly as I make extensive use of the mission editor.

wwp was better than w:a for years. w:a did not get better until Deadcode started patching it. Even still, it is not fair to claim one is better than another because the two versions have different features from each other. If wwp recieved a few patches, it would be up in front.

So you say WWP was only better for a bit longer than a year? ;)

I never said w:a was better than wwp. I said w:a got better. And Silkworm doesn't count because it's not actually a patch.

It easy to say which is better. Look at both games, see that they both have things that the other doesnt and decide which are the most important to you. Colour maps and high res is important to me so I like it more. Fort mode was ace but i can live without it and mission editing was great but only supported 2 players, which made them useless.

I bought WWP and was greatly disappointed. I remember writing a long post on the Worms League forums listing the 11 really awful things wrong with it, that the non-updated WA didn't have wrong with it. Let me see if I can dig up my memories.

1. Every .BIT map is moved several pixels to the left upon rendering with map texture. This makes map-making a sort of left-side-compensating nightmare. I found that when I wanted to play my rope races I had made for WA in WWP, many of them were ruined by this unforgivable bug.

2. You can't hold backspace in the in-game chat. It simply does not backspace more than once. This is a great annoyance, especially after having typed something long then decided not to send it. You must then tap backspace an infuriating number of times.

3. The WormNET2 server is encrypted, making logging into the server with a standard IRC client impossible.

4. Schemes can't be saved in the multiplayer menu. This was the first thing I noticed when I got WWP. I had just finished making my rope race scheme, but I couldn't save it, annoying me a great deal.

5. Indestructable terrain can not be set in the game, which led me to believe originally that the entire functionality of indestructable terrain had been removed. When someone made a scheme editor for WWP schemes though, I found otherwise. Still, the inability to set a scheme option in-game is quite ridiculously bad, and should not go unnoted.

6. Wormpot modes can't be saved along with schemes, so they must be set before each game. Indestructable worms could be saved along with the scheme in WA, so I don't see why that was taken out of the scheme format.

7. There is an input bug when pressing space too quickly after a rope release, such as a pump, where the rope would not fire despite a blatant press of space. I know that it is not a placebo effect, as I did extensive comparative testing on WA and WWP to be sure it wasn't just my negative thoughts about WWP which were making me feel like my space-press was being missed. Note that I was the one who reported the last WA rope input bug to Deadcode, so I definitely know how to test for input bugs. Basically, rope racing reliably is impossible on WWP because one never knows when the rope will simply not fire in midair. I, being a heavy rope racer, was dismayed by this.

I recall there being 11 things I found when I was writing my post on Worms League forums back in 2002, but I can't think of the last 4 at the moment. I haven't played WWP in over a year.

Good points there, Lex!
You can actually save all the "cheat" options in W:A with the scheme.

Deadcode released the first beta update in August 2002, when WWP was only 1 year and a few months old.

But from the perspective of someone choosing between the two today, there's really no choice left. WA has an online community and WWP doesn't. Bye, WWP.

Are you sure about that bonz? The first beta patch made for w:a was made by someone from Team17 wasn't it? I thought Deadcode's patches didn't come for at least 1 year after that one. (at least 2 or 3 years after wwp was released)

I remember the chaos on w:a when the first beta patch was released. I think that was what threw me off w:a in the first place. Everyone was yelling at each other and acting very hatefully because some people had the patch and others didn't. That left a firm impression on me that the majority of people on w:a were jerks while people on wwp were much more friendly. That feeling has dwindled for me over the years, but is probably the root of why I never really liked w:a.

By any chance, did you actually use the mission editor?

Yes, that was Lion (http://forum.team17.co.uk/member.php?u=2339).
The v3.5 beta 1 patch is the first one listed in the readme. And it's commented by Deadcode.

Yes, and it realy wouldn't have been too hard to have found that out for yourself. While I'm tired and can't realy be bothered to try and explain. I'm also bored so what the hell.

If you actually read my post you will see it says only two players. You know, entities that are playing the game. Not computer teams that emulate a human playing a game but actuall players. If you have some new mission editor that allows more than two player missions I think alot of people here would like to know where you got it.

People who installed it thought it was horrible because of the ridiculous cut-off text bug. As you may recall, I made a quick fix for that (involving a simple font bitmap file edit) and was treated like a savior. :)

Ah. I interpreted your post as not being able to play with only one player.
