Oh yes... better late than never... ;)
First of all i have to thank everybody that voted for me and everybody that tried so hard to win but didn't... HA! Just kidding... you've (almost) all made some really good pictures that would most likely beat mine... even without vote strategies and evil plans... :D
I'd like to take this space to set some rules for the competitions to come. You're more than welcome to disagree and discuss them:
• The entry must have been released after the first day of the current month (no old art allowed). It doesn't matter if it took you 2 minutes or 2 years to draw it. If you released it after the start of the current month, it's valid.
• The host of FOTM can't entry or vote for the current competition. Hence he'll be able to cast the final vote if a draw happens.
• The winner gets a request picture done by the host of the current month. The complexity and the time the host will have to draw the picture are to be set between the winner and the host after the competition ends.
Good luck and like the old Larry (from SNES' Rock'n Roll Racing) use to say:
LET THE CARNAGE BEGIN!

Also, using equally sized lines on everyting makes for a very dull look.I'm using Fireworks MX and vectors to draw my worms, I can't really draw them well otherwise, and there's no way to really make the lines bigger and smaller along the same vector...
Error404
20 Jul 2006, 04:25
You actually can... it's harder, but it's doable...
You gotta draw the lines as if they were shapes. I did that in Photoshop once. First i used the pen tool to create a shape covering all the inner part of the drawing (without cover the outlines). Then i drew another shape covering up the outlines, on the very outter border of the drawing. Finally, i used one of PS's tools that fills only the interference of the 2 shapes... at that point, i had a vector shape who covered only the outlines, and, therefore, allowed me to edit the thickness of the outlines wherever i wanted to. :)
Even if you don't want to do that (i gotta admit it might be too much of a hassle to do everytime), you can just try to loosen your style a whole bunch.
MtlAngelus

Well then, you can try and find a style that works better with vector lines, like having the outlines be wider than the rest of the lines in the characters. Something more stylish.

To reiterate what I said on DA, GIVE US SOME INTERESTING POSES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
If you can draw a worm's tail at a different angle then surely tou can at least make them lean a bit.
Your worms look like they're sliding along the ground like its an ice rink.:p
You say you're trying to improve, and lord knows you have, but you're going about it all wrong. You should be concentrating on the shape, style and expression of your worms, rather than the shading and lighting side of it all.:p
And don't say you're too lazy. Because if you were lazy you wouldn't have improved at all.

And don't say you're too lazy. Because if you were lazy you wouldn't have improved at all.now those are things I can actually care about. I'll look into that whole area in the future, as I don't think the outlines being a specific width effect the image that much and that you other guys are just looking for something to complain about :p honestly, why does it even matter if the outline is the same width all around? look at other artists, most others keep a thin line of about the same width all the way around, sure, it deviates, but rarely enough to really tell unless you're zoomed in or studying it intently for no reason.
and error, this is fireworks, not photoshop, there's a difference. even if it's POSSIBLE to do what you're talking about, I've never heard of it and don't know how to do it myself even if I was worried about the outlines enough to actually care to try.
SupSuper
20 Jul 2006, 14:04
I think the point is you don't have to use the same outline width for everything. Well you don't HAVE to, but it makes things look better. Usually backgrounds have a lower thickness (or even no outline) than characters and outer outlines are thicker than inside outlines. It helps give stuff contrast, perspective and what not. I'm not sure, I'm not an artist. :p
And if you look, it's usually more noticable on hand-drawn work than computer work since it's a bigger bother to do on computer work.
If Fireworks is anything similar to Flash, it shouldn't be too hard to just select a line and change its width. Or if you wanna have a varying width (much more advanced) you can usually pull it off by having a different shape for the outline and another for the content. More info online.

More info online.fireworks is similar in some ways, but not all. I've seen varying vector widths on flash, but never from fireworks. granted, if someone can suggest a way that's worth the effort I might consider doing it just to shut you whiners up, as I honestly don't see what the big deal is about something like that....on the other hand, I could possibly try making the worms' outlines thicker, but the lines I use now are already 1-pixel, so I can't make the background lines smaller.
SupSuper
20 Jul 2006, 15:35
I think the minimum width value is 0.25.
I think the minimum width value is 0.25.
For Flash. Fireworks' minimum is 1, as far as I can tell.
And nice pic Aku. The worms could stand some work (the one doing the fire-punch type thing looks a bit like he's using cables to fly up like someone on TV... looks a bit weird), but the fireball/energy blasty stuff is awesome.
SupSuper
20 Jul 2006, 16:28
Oh. In any case, my trick to create variable width vectors is to just copy+paste the shape, resize it a bit bigger than the original, make it black, put it behind the original and then just nudge a bit. Example:
28174
Well looking at it, I'm on your side since I don't really know how to use variable width properly so I just stick to fixed width. Though removing outlines can also have a neat effect on, say, backgrounds, specially if things are properly coloured so you don't need them. Say, you could remove the "corner outlines" from your background and it'd give it a more 3d feel.
MtlAngelus
20 Jul 2006, 18:37
:p honestly, why does it even matter if the outline is the same width all around?
It makes all the difference, really, even with the slightest variations.

I'm sure there is a way on Fireworks. But mind that i won't install a program that i don't use frequently just to figure out a way for you to do that. No offense.
